This Polar bear was spotted walking in Ny-Alesund during our stay on 19 July 2011 from 2.00am - 4.00am. Probably it was looking out for some easy food!

Note that in Svalbard people don't lock their houses or cars ordinarily so quick escape from a polar bear can be made ! You hop in a convenient bldg or car to escape them !

No, I am not living in the island at the moment. There are research stations from 11 countries including one from India called Himadri. I was there all summer - 24 hours sunlight, no night during summer. There is one bar which opens on Saturday and Wednesday for few hours. Not many native people in Ny-Alesund. There are mainly researchers living in Ny-Alesund. There is one souvenir shop there which opens every Thursday for an hour or when Cruise ships arrive there. More later

I was there two years ago for 2 months and a polar bear visited the village. The day after we found out he had ripped apart the seat of a snow scooter. The owner was not amused. This bike was lucky.

When I was a boy of ten years, I got a book of a fisherman who, with his crew, found a small boat with a three years old child in the arctic sea somewhere between Spitzbergen and Greenland. The story was telling how that child grew up in the Arctic, mainly on Spitzbergen. Since having read that book that Archipel is somehow on my mind. It is amazing how today we have access to recordings, clips, and films from the remotest areas of our planet, and a clip like this one gives me a bit imagination of how it must be to live way up there, where you have polar nights with dusk and dawn around noon and you would welcome the sun when it comes back for the first time in a year. Thank you so much for this one. And yes, in that story, a polar bear came up to the house where the child lived while the fishermen were back on the sea.

@Curtis Martin. Hi the acceptance rate on UNIS is changing every year. Suddenly one year there a lot of people applying and next year they can't fill up the courses. They have a normal grocery store there were you will get what you need of food. Just be warned that the prices for food is extremely expensive. Hope you get to Unis, it is a really nice place to study

Having just been visiting that site, Ny-Ålesund ( april 15) I can only say - ahhh - but everything there is just beyond any scale or measure:) From my point of view people from every visiting country present there was genuienly friendly and also seemingly happy to answere any question about the arctic environment. We didn't see any ursus marinus (?) but we did have a rather close encounter with the walrus, seel, polar fox, grouse and of coourse mr. rudolph reindeer. Thank you for posting this clip, I guess you were posting from the Chinese building, -please correct me if I'm wrong, but anyhow it was a great feature:)

I was curious about the location, so I googled, and as I think other people might be interested too, I decided to share the information. Wikipedia says: "Ny-Ålesund ("New Ålesund") is one of the four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago. It is located on Brøggerhalvøya and Kongsfjorden. Like the rest of Svalbard, Ny-Ålesund is administered by the Kingdom of Norway." (Not to be confused with Ålesund, which is in the western part of mainland Norway.)

Hi Taylor, I am not sure about the acceptance rate of the UNIS neither am sure if you could get some American food there. I have not stayed much long in Longyearbyen (the main town of Svalbard) where UNIS is situated. I use to work further north than UNIS/Longyearbyen. There is a small cluster of pubs and shops and you may find some good food there. However, I don't mind Norwegian food so I had no problems. Most of the Norwegians speak English so you should not have any prob. Hope this helps!
