Great review. You captured quite well how it relates to the existing Polar lineup. After Polar decides to update their displays making them larger, and brighter, I'd really like them to open their walled garden and support programmed structured workout sync from TrainingPeaks/TrainerRoad/Today'sPlan/etc.

Honestly I think they did a pretty good job. They didn't change a ton and that's a little disappointing, but every single update addresses something that I've heard people complaining about. From the screen brightness, changing routes mid-run and zooming, proper trackback, compass outside of activities to the sapphire screen. Might not be enough compared to what Garmin is doing, but it seems like they are listening to feedback and working on the right things. I'm also happy that the V2 gets all the updates this time around.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
For sure! All of the updates are certainly welcome and the Grit X Pro is a well rounded watch. I guess my only concern is the $599 price tag of the Titan model. That's encroaching competition like the Fenix 6 Pro and COROS Vertix 2 which both have more features. The mid-range Grit X Pro is probably the best value. Thanks for watching!

Awesome job - you missed nothing. And was the backlight on during the compass/alt widget overview? That was dark! Last - still no answer from LeGrand - when you set the watch to ‘high’ will the wrist raise backlight be full high brightness? That’s one thing that’s driven me crazy - dim wrist raise backlight. Thanks!

It might have been set to medium… not totally sure. The brightness setting over rides the gesture backlight so “high” will always be high despite pushing the button. Thanks for watching Hunter!

Looks nice as a though watch but in terms of features it kinda falls short of my expectations... As someone that recently went from a Vantage M to a Garmin 945 LTE (thanks for the great review and reccomendation Dave), after briefly owning a Grit X which gave me terrible heart rate results, I have to confess this left me dissapointed as I expected that it would at least bring in dual GPS and map guidance to put the heat on Garmin to push the envelope forward with their next iterations of the FR and Fenix series. Guess Polar is somewhat playing it safe and staying faithful to their current recovery core focus.

screen brightness on the garmin new fenix lines and tactix goes the same way. the brighter the screen the more battery it drains. even the garmin instinct watches. if you leave them at 5% brightness you gain a couple more days. the lower the more battery.

@ChaseTheSummit

In general Garmin is kind of the king when it comes to navigation/mapping. They have full routeable maps on the 945/Fenix 6 Pro and even the breadcrumb navigation is superior because it supports waypoints and you can design the course within Garmin Connect and sync with your phone. BUT, the Grit X Pro is also a nice device as well.
@Akuphon
@Akuphon 2 жыл бұрын
The new Grit X Pro with copper color looks amazing! Unfortunately they kept the same small and really low res screen. Transflective screen type is totally fine but the bezels are HUGE! Polar should really have updated the screen. Also the lack of maps and real navigation is somewhat deal breaker in a watch designed for outdoor activities like hiking.

Im considering a Grit X Pro over Garmin because of both Polar's simplicity, & my impression that they may help me through the Recovery Pro/tests offered. Hoping to get the Titan version due weight, but reading all the different views on Garmin watches etc. has been a challenge. Finally, it seems despite the claims everywhere on various aspects, the key issue is how much does one trust Polar or Garmin to create & manage data. I dont know which is better, but watching Garmin's control over the market place ..I find myself instictively favouring/wanting to trust the underdog!

great review, thank for the info. something i guess polar have not fixed, GPS accuracy, only switchable between 1sec and 1 minute... would be great to have 3/5/10sec accuracy or so. 1 minute is totally unuseful. and yes, some of the pro features, would have been developed for the original grit!
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
It would be nice to have more granular control of how the GPS was logged.
@dawidkrysiak
@dawidkrysiak 2 жыл бұрын
I think it has a reasoning to be like that. When you have lower GPS accuracy, I guess that GPS needs to warm up with every update (as it is done when starting the training session), which, as we know it, can be quite time consuming, especially in bad conditions (tall buildings, dense forest, steep hills around). It wouldn't be able to warm up with 30s updates, it would work exactly as it's when you have 1s mode. Lower accuracy modes are not to be used in running or bike activities, but only walk / hike activities, when the speed is quite slow and you don't makes turns often, so this 1 minute accuracy should be enough as it would generally catch all the route details. What do you think?

@@ChaseTheSummit I think that some extreme ultra runner could be disappointed with Grit X if he requires to have topographic maps in his device. Otherwise, when you only want the navigation assistance just in case, very good HR measuring, excellent GPS accuracy, you're some mid-level runner or doing any other most popular sports, and don't want to spend a fortune on the watch, you'll be happy with Polar Grit X. Good job. Am using and loving the Grit X from its first day. To me there is no reason to go for any of the new ones. I am (still) missing lots of interval features for track running compared to former Garmin watches. But love other features (sleep & revovery). Am still disappointed with the 'new' navigation features - no reason to gor for it. To me it is rather clear: Wait for Garmin to come up with Fenix 7 and check carefully for getting near Polar-Features in other fields. Maps take a lot of development. Garmin has been making handheld mapping devices for over 15 years so they had a huge leap in terms of development. Companies like Polar, COROS, and Suunto are basically catching up at this point. Hopefully we see this more commonly soon.

Fan from Hong Kong. Nice review as always and enjoy watching it everytime. Unfortunately, as a Grit X owner, I am super disappointed with the Polar's way of handling old models. Most new features on these new watches can simply add to the Grit-X by a simple software update but they didn't. Only one major firmware update since the Grit-X launch, which is way behind of the competitors like Sunnto and Garmin. Very likely Grit-X is my last Polar watch.

I think the last few releases from Polar shows that the company is really struggling to keep up with the opposition. I've had Polar watches going back to an M400, V800 and now the original V Titan. The V Titan was to me a big disappointment, it lacked a number of features that the V800 had, I wrongly assumed Polar would fix that over time via firmware. Instead they closed the model line down and introduced the V2, as far as I can recall development of the original V ended at that point. The V2 and Grit X are just a repackaging of the same bits, this is where Polar's problem is, they are a small company, I expect that they've got a ship full of chip sets, bought in bulk to keep the price down. There won't be any substantial upgrades such as Topo Maps, on board music, Pulse Ox, NFC payments etc until they've used up their current supply of chips and order a 'next generation' chip set. That might bring the features mentioned above plus a bigger brighter screen (essential if they want topo maps) for improved day to day wearability. The question is will Polar be around long enough.

That's an interesting theory. I also think Polar prides itself on being a super simple sports/fitness watch that doesn't include too much fluff. In that regard they do a good job. I agree that it is annoying when watch makers don't include features that the watch is perfectly capable of, like, for instance Apple, which even updates their software for it's 4 year old Series 3. However, suggesting that Garmin doesn't do this isn't quite correct. It may be true within the Fenix line, but they are really the worst offender here by not including Multi-Sport mode, Power Meter sensors or Outdoor Swimming on any of their less expensive watches when the hardware is perfectly capable of doing those things. In fact, if you want any of those features, expect to pay at least $200 more to get them on a Garmin watch. That was really what made Coros, when they included all those things in a $200 watch.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
It will be interesting to see how these companies evolve in this regard. COROS is kind of paving the way with updates. Garmin does an OK job with recent hardware. And Polar... kind uses hardware as their software updates. I'd like to see it get better all around.
