Another solid video! Coros seems to do all the little things right. Font size choices, background choices, consistent Bluetooth connection, easier navigation functionality buuuuuut is WAY behind the flow ecosystem. Five buttons and still no way to get to a settings menu while actively recording an activity :P

Interesting review. I bought the standard Coros Apex ~6 months ago to replace a Garmin 235 which replaced a Polar m400. I've only had a couple of issues with the Apex, it looses connectivity to my android 10 phone a lot, sometimes a couple of times in the same day. Also, when running, it tells me what I was doing maybe 10-20 seconds ago. If i'm pacing someone, or racing, and I find I'm at the wrong pace, I can't just change my pace and immediately check my watch. I have to wait for it to catch up with what I'm doing, if I haven't go to the pace I want then I have to go through the whole process again. For long hikes and long slow runs it's great, the navigation is good and the battery life excellent. For pacing others, shorter races and maybe training I'll either dig out my 235 or buy a new Polar watch.

Polar does not automatically update your HRmax so the spikes can´t "mess up all your other data", as claimed in the video, thankfully. You set your HRmax manually in Flow and if you don´t do that then Polar will just subtract your stated age from 220.

Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about; but what I’m finding is valuable is the backend system associated with the watch. For example, I’ve built a great community of friends on Garmin. It would be valuable, to speak about the pros and cons of the social side of each of these various systems. Yes I realize there is Strava but it doesn’t seem to be very popular (my own opinion).

Yeah totally. This is a big part of what makes FitBit so appealing. Lots of people connect using their ecosystem which makes it really hard to give up and leave. Thankfully I find Strava much more socially engaging. I only have like 2 or 3 Garmin Connect "friends". Thanks for watching!

I am interested both of these watches for primarily mountain biking and shorter trail runs. The navigation on the coros seems like it would be better when I visit new trails. Does the coros have phone alerts while in an activity? From having both of the watches which do you think would be better for tracking off road cycling?
@ChaseTheSummit

The Coros does have in-activity alerts. They pop up at the bottom of the screen and you can dismiss them with a button press. They'd both do the job for off-road biking but as you said the Coros does offer better navigation features if thats something you need. Hope that helps.

Dude, my decision towards each watch changed every 10sec in your video... I think if you are looking for a more puristic watch the cronos apex 42mm and the pace 2 are much better than what you get from polar for this money. But at this price segment, I'd go with the grit x... or maybe the grit x 2 next year. I'd go for the grit x for running and the apex pro for expeditions. It also might depend on how much the price will drop until next year.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
It's a tough call. I think both are pretty good. The COROS watches offer a longer life expectancy because COROS tends to update their firmware for years after release where as Polar tends to let their devices fade off when new ones are available. COROS also offers a richer navigation experience. Thanks for watching.

How does the grit x compare with the straight coros apex? I run with a stryd pod, and average around 30 miles per week. Usual mix of hitt and endurance. I love data, so accuracy is important, plus middle aged eyesight, so big is beautiful. Currently have FR645 which is OK. Love polar flow... Any chance of a budget comparison of apex v grit?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 3 жыл бұрын
They Grit X has slightly better GPS-ON battery life but much worse Smart Watch battery life with about 4 days. The Apex on the other hand lasts for weeks on a single charge. The Polar has much more powerful training tools like Training Load Pro and excellent sleep tracking. The Apex is more basic in this department and focuses on just being a rock solid GPS watch. It's kind of a toss up which one is better. It really depends on your needs. The Pace 2 might even be a good fit if you want to save a few bucks and don't need any form of Navigation features!

I just purched the Grit X despite being 2 years old. I like the app, nightly recharge, fitspark..... however, I have noticed something that bugs me. Compared to my AW S4 the OHR seem to be about 10 to 15 seconds behind until it catches up with the AW. This issue is obvious especially at the start of a run. What I don't understand, Polar makes the best chest strap, but cannot get their algorithm to match the hardware?!. The AW senor respsonsivness is superb , in fact the only watch that I have found that can keep up with AW is the Coros Apex pro which responds quickly to HR spikes and dips, but oh boy I cannot stand that dim screen on the Coros. What is the score with Polar? The end results are not miles away, Polar can be way out on the max hr but the average can be good if its a gentle walk.

I think you kind of nailed it in your explanation. The Grit X is excellent for training tools, and collecting health/wellness data. The Coros is a rock solid reliable GPS watch that's much simpler to use. Which is best comes down to your preference. I think the Apex pro looks more modern but I can see the screen being dimmer than the Gritx. Also the Grit X looks like a mash up between a fenix 6 anf 945. The truth is the Grit x is for proper data nerds that want to know how their bodies are coping with training. The one things missing on the Grit is ABC. Both watches are great but the Coros is definitely more outdoor watch then hardcore training. The Polar app is very detailed and Coros very pleasing to look at. How would you go about evaluating the Grit X vs Suunto 9 Baro and Vertix?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 4 жыл бұрын
I've honestly had very little experience with the Suunto 9 and Suunto products as a whole. I reached out the other day to see if I could get a loaner 9 and 5 to do some testing with and potentially post a video on but never heard back unfortunately. From a high level I think the Suunto 9 needs a hardware update to stay competitive. The only thing it had going for it when it launched was that it had optimized battery modes. But now all of the competitors can last for 40+ hours in GPS tracking. When comparing the Grit X to the Vertix it's basically the same as the Apex Pro just with more premium build materials and even better battery life. In that case, the Grit X is a much better value. I like the Vertix a lot, but I've always considered it's price was too high. I get that it's their flagship but it doesn't really offer anything more than what the Apex does. I suppose if having insane battery life is your number 1 priority the Vertix is probably the best option. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

@@ChaseTheSummit I think the Ionic would be a better challenge, that's the best running watch from Fitbit and the GPS is quite good. I can't find any big difference to Garmin. One day is Garmin better, the next the Ionic or they are the same.

What is the battery life like if you set the Apex Pro to collect heart rate data every 1 second?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 3 жыл бұрын
In GPS mode its the same, but standby/smartwatch mode takes a pretty big hit. With the default setting it goes for a month or so. In 1 second mode it will cut that in half to around 2 weeks. Hope that helps!

So which watch is your daily? Coros, Fenix, or Polar?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 4 жыл бұрын
I tend to switch them out for the sake of making these videos. However, I can say I tend to wear the Garmin Fenix 6 when I'm just living my life. It has a lot more "smart watch" stuff than the others. I like the calendar widget, and how you can read entire messages on the screen rather than just truncated versions. The mapping/navigation is also a huge advantage for me as I tend to find myself on unmarked trails or in areas I'm not familiar with. The Apex Pro is a fantastic watch though. as just a pure "GPS Watch" it's so easy to use and reliable. The sync happens instantly after a workout. Polar is also a compelling option now with the Grit X. It has a lot going for it in the "training analytics department". Honestly, there's no bad choice. We're lucky to have so many options! Hope this helps!

Grit X is a fail product marketed towards trail running, its navigation is sucks (basically non existing). Coros navigation is great, you just download GPX file provided by races and upload via Coros app (no 3rd party app needed). And you can start/stop navigation, use compass during activity. GPS battery life and accuracy is pretty similar nowadays since Coros pushed the GPS battery life up to 35 hours on their Apex model, then everyone else started doing that. Heart rate accuracy is the issue here. What I like about Polar is its Flow app only at this point.

I'm not sure I'd call it a fail. Competition is good! It only benefits us in the end. Polar is new to this "outdoor enthusiast" segment so I'm hopeful they'll continue to develop the software a bit further to cater to the needs of trail and ultra runners. For now I think the Grit X is still a decent option for people who may take training a little more seriously and might benefit from using "Run Power" and the structured training programs in Polar Flow. Polar Flow is really nice... and honestly one of the biggest selling points of the hardware as a whole. Thanks for watching and your feedback!

For those of us already accustomed to Flow and the Polar ecosystem (I have a stalwart M400 and H7 strap) Grit X is the big upgrade we have been waiting for. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting on mine. Was due at my home on Saturday - when I was home to get it. But that's not Polar's fault. My fault for going with a smaller third party vendor (and getting a not insubstantial 10% discount) and relying on USPS. I cross-shopped COROS for a loooong time. But couldn't pull the trigger because of their lack of long term data tracking (i.e. Flow capabilities). Until COROS builds something like that I'm probably a hard pass.

@@clarkbarrett6274 Yeah, Flow is great. But then as I reflect, I think it is not a need. Because I always plan my run manually, but it is good to have and will help a lot. Not a need in my case.

@@raymondfoo9045 Um, can't see how planning a run is a (critical) need. Using data over time is a need. Any of these watches is at heart a data compiler. If the tools don't let you read and assess that data properly then they have missed the primary purpose.
