Just got out of break in on my 650, I noticed the difference, picked up a few hundred RPM and when it did I thought something was wrong at first LOL. Suspected the 650 would hold its own below the top end, but surprised to see it was this close... not sorry I stuck with the 650. Beyond racing, can't see why a trail sled would ever need more power.

I agree with you 100 percent tell that to the Polaris engineers who just came out with a 850 turbo for the trails that puts out like 180 hp.🙉 I love power to but its totally out of control! Definitely not needed for any type of trail riding. Good luck to the inexperienced riders who buy one trying to keep it out of the tree's.

RPM and power fade is caused exactly by what Jessie describes in this video...a worn belt. Every sled I've owned does this. Once I start experiencing this, I change belts. I never seem to get more than 1000-1200 miles out of a belt. If you're into going fast consistently, change your belt!

I cracked 100 on my VR1 650 137” with ice ripper 1.25. It pulled to 97, then took about 5 seconds to hit a hundo. It was perfect conditions, no wind, big wide flat hard pack groomed trail. I would of liked to give it another 20 seconds, but ran out of trail.

You guys should add an assault to the group for chassis variety.. My 19 Assault 850 pulled a sledlength on my buddys' 21 VR1 850 (that has 5 more HP) and held it till I let off. Top speed on flat trail 114 in the recall. (190 pics, no track spin)

Here’s something to think about. If your friends are fairly equivalent in skill to you, how does the 650 stack up to your 850 on trails? I’m figuring that on 90 % plus of situations it doesn’t matter who’s in front, no one is easily spanking anyone else with just motor power. Some trails are fast enough that top end can get the edge on smaller HP sleds but I’m wondering if they both pull downstairs close enough that equal riders are mostly matched up on a majority of a days ride. What do you think?
@nealcichanowicz5041
@nealcichanowicz5041 2 жыл бұрын
all things equal the 850 is faster at all times. It has more power everywhere and virtually the same weight(6lbs) heavier.
@mobilewintercamp7515
@mobilewintercamp7515 2 жыл бұрын
@@nealcichanowicz5041 I’m sure you’re correct but a lot of riding on trail is way different than a drag race. There can be whole trails or long stretches were you ride in a speed zone with a small window of low and high speed. Basically in the pocket and top end doesn’t come into play. Even acceleration advantage can be greatly reduced. It depends on how wide the trails are in combination with how sharp the turns average with the length of the straight always. I’ve gone back and forth owning 6 and 8 hundreds as have friends, there can be little difference until the real big straight section comes up.
@djg1028

@@mobilewintercamp7515 exactly, from what I have heard from the 0 to 50 mile an hour trails it’s really hard to tell the difference between the two motors but once you’re doing above 51 one is noticeably faster.

tight trails comes down to rider level not HP or CC. I would take my 850 any day because when I need or want the power its there. But no you wouldnt notice much of a difference in tight trails between them.

Jesse, I don’t think a worn belt with cause the sled to loss 700 RPM. A couple years ago I had an intermittent RPM problems on my 2017 800 Assault and it was caused by the exhaust valves sticking. I ultimately had the exhaust valve cable break and the exhaust valves also broke. I suggest you pull the valves an give the cable and exhaust valves a good inspection.

The 650 is made to offer a base level to upgrade and pay Polaris $1200 to buy the 850. The 650 & 850 cost Polaris the exact same amount to produce. Polaris does not want you buying the 650 EVER. Unless you're in the mountains, buy the 650, save the money and gasoline.... You're almost never in a situation where the 850 is ever needed. You're paying the money and losing the fuel economy for a sticker on the side of the sled.

the gas theory is BS. fuel consumption is based on how haevy your thumb is. and honestky if youre on a 650 and riding with an 850 with someone who rides the same I bet the 650 will use more fuel because its working harder to keep the speeds. weve tested It before.

I haven't rode in a long time. It never snows up here anymore. If it does this year I'm thinking about a xc. However I can't decide between 650 or 850. Most riding would be ditch banging. I don't need a 850 but it's like the man card saying "more power" to me. Any impressions on the storm 150 track for my riding conditions? I do like to play in the deeper stuff too (if that ever happens again).

so heres what i always tell everyone in regards to the 650/850 decision. You may not need the 850 power but it is nice to have the power on tap ata ny given time. I would say 850. As far as tracks i ran the 1.5 for 2 years. super great track. Good bite in the deeper stuff but it killed to much MPH for me up top but if youre not looking for peak MPH then its a great track!

They all seem to win the lake race over everything else by pulling everyone low to MID and by the first 70-80 yards you’re alone and still pulling and the “faster” top end sleds never catch up down the lake as they are beat with separation on the way up, especially in he MIDrange. Same results every time.
