You look like you've done that before Streeter, nice teardown video. I like the reminder to bag and label all your parts, because I can't remember from one day to the next, so it helps tremendously in the reassembly.

Thanks! Same hear. If I didn’t bag and tag. I would have no idea where everything went. Lol

First off thank you for your videos they were very helpful. I was hoping you could answer a question for me. When putting the fly wheel back on is the nut that holds it on(spec is 90ft/lbs I believe) supposed to be flush with the shaft? I tried a few times and the nut sticks out just slightly. My concern is the water pump belt. When I rotate the engine the belt is slightly away from pump sprocket or whatever it’s called.
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 4 жыл бұрын
The nut should be on the shaft with a couple of threads showing. I would check the flywheel and make sure it’s sliding over the key way on the end of the crank.

Do you have to replace the pin clips when you drive them out with the homemade socket thing or should they be okay? I like that idea. I have a few more questions about it though.
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I did. They’re included with the pistons.

Is a top end rebuild a feasible repair with the engine still in the chassis? Obviously it would be better to have it on a bench. But shouldnt be much different correct? Thanks.
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It’s just harder on your back. But absolutely can be done.

Why not just use a small slide hammer with a sheet metal screw and "screw " it into the old seal and Use slide hammer to pull old seal out? then gently tap new seal in place? As a machinest and mill right for 45 years, I have done this method MANY MANY times.
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 3 жыл бұрын
The engine was well past that. Cases needed to be split to address crank issues

@@StreetersGarage I have a 488 that will not idle below 4K. I pulled the boots and they are shot! Hope I don't have to pull primary and replace seal!

Have you verified the slide height and that they’re in sync? I just posted a video that walks you through the entire process.

Was there just one retaining ring on the pto side of crankshaft?
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Nothing on the PTO. There's a large snap ring on the magneto side. There's a alignment ring on the crankshaft that matches up to a groove in the case halves. Thanks for watching!

How did you get the brace with the 2 allen heads off by the clutch holding the case together ?

The place that I bought the replacement took the old crank in as a core so it could be rebuilt.

Did you replace the seal in the strator housing? If you did how did you press a new on in? Also I noticed the water pump shaft is wallowed out like the one in my sled, did you replace that .

I tapped it out with a hammer and reinstalled with a seal driver.

How much crank end play is acceptable?
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 3 жыл бұрын
There's no official spec from Polaris in the service manual. However, typically runout (rotational) should be than .005 and end play less than .003
@MrNcotton

@@StreetersGarage good to know, I’ve got probably .100 end play on my 98 700 but it runs great and the bearings are not noisy. Thoughts on that?
@StreetersGarage
@StreetersGarage 3 жыл бұрын
.100 or .010? Because .100 is almost a 1/8th of a inch (.125)

Something is definitely wrong. Best guess is that the locating rings on the crank that mate with the case halves are broken.

If just doing pto seal can I leave top end in place?
@StreetersGarage

No - the cases need to be split and to split you need to remove the top end.

With the Liberty motors you can’t. You need to split the cases unfortunately.

No problem. It's not that bad of a job to do to take it down. Just stay organized and bag/tag all of your parts and fasteners. This will save so much time when you back to put it all back together. Also reference the service manual during re-assembly for sequence and torque specs.
