In my little home town, the firefighters are all volunteer. When a call goes out, the large siren sounds and can be heard miles away. When you are outside in the freezing snow watching your house burn and you hear that siren. You know that help is coming and that provides a calming effect. Strange as that sounds.

I actually found the house siren comforting when our home was on fire. I knew help was coming...

For those of you complaining about the siren being too loud, y’all need to grow up. Where I live, the neighboring city’s FD used to be volunteer and has a Federal Signal STH-10B on top, which is now inactive. It was used for calling in firefighters who didn’t have pagers. Being that this station has, judging by the tone, the exact same model of siren, odds are it has volunteer firefighters or doesn’t have pagers for every firefighter working at the station. It’s not noise pollution. In some areas, sirens on top of fire stations also double as outdoor warning sirens for natural and man-made disasters (i.e nuclear meltdown, tornado, chemical disaster, military attack, etc.), and in some areas, they even use their sirens in the event of a missing person or dangerous individual. We can’t rely solely on our smartphones, because not everybody has one, which is why we need sirens. Not to mention your smartphone will only last you 2-3 years at most whereas a siren will last at least 10-20 years depending on how properly it’s maintained and taken care of. My point is, sirens save lives, and we need them. Case closed.

My father was a volunteer firefighter back in the 60s and 70s in Europe I saw him many times leaving home thru the night and day when the fire station siren went off so I still get Goose Bumps every time I hear this type of sirens.

I'm a retired firefighter from South Jersey now living in Florida. When our city wide went off I would get complaints about it as well as the Q sirens on the apparatus. They would always come to me because most people New where my day job was. My standard response was "would you like to hear it if your place was on fire?" that always shuts them up.

He was clearly pulling up just to say hi...very normal interaction

If they don't want to hear the siren sound than don't call the fire department. Fair enough? LOL

With how much traffic there is even at night right in front of the station, they need the extra 'air raid' siren to keep things safer.

I wish our firestation would still use it's siren for most calls. Something like a STARS landing where you only need a few guys it would be okay to just be paged but the siren is so much better, especially at night. It gets people up and to the station very quick. The problem was that we would get a lot of bystanders and people who don't need to be at the station showing up and just getting in the way.

Whoever called the cops is the worst person ever it tells the public when there’s something going on and it alerts members who don’t have their pagers or personal radios, scanners e.t.c

These sirens legit basically tell the person who's in trouble, from a distance,"HANG IN THERE WE'RE COMING!!!"

The only time they set the sirens here in Tennessee off is when there,s A Tornado or its the monthly Test.

That siren is literally just used to call our local volunteers. And its a minute drive down the street from me so you can guess how that can be.

Pagers Don't always go off. But Noise Does. Good call!

We are volunteer and have a siren that gets triggered at any time for fire calls. It's not really needed since we have multiple ways to receive the call but it doesn't hurt to keep using it

We have a Thunderbolt on a pole by our station, it only goes off during civil defense test and severe weather, we use pagers now and E dispatch for all medical and fire calls.

Reminds me of a teacher back in high school. We had a group of 5 or 6 kids who were training to be firefighters, obviously could not go on active calls yet, but they had the whole 9 yards the uniform pagers radios etc. The kids seemed to fiddle with their equipment through out lunch and you would hear these obnoxious loud beeps etc. One teacher in particular would flip out and attempt to take said equipment until our school officer shut him down.

They’d really hate the one in my hometown. I now live about 5-6 miles away to the west and you can hear it clearly. Took me a few months to realize that’s where it was coming from after matching it up to the tones dropping.

The only time anyone at my Fire Company is allowed to activate the station siren on the outside is if 911 doesn’t set it off

There are people that call us all kind of names while cutting people out of vehicles on this two lane road and holding up their important errands to town. I've asked one woman how would she feel if we were extricating her 16 year old daughter to life flight to the tier 1 ER 65 miles away.

If I was the cop I would of went to who reported and told the person that we had swat teams that busted the doors down and arrested all the firefighters and will spend a long time in prison lol what a joke people need to grow up and deal with it if they had there house on fire they would want help asap and wouldn't care about a house siren

I Germany in smaller Communitys most Fireman have Pager but at Daytime most bigger Alerts going over Siren, and then over more than one Firestation. At Night is Pager Alert ,when need more Firefighters there is going the Siren off or at Big Fire all Alerts. Pager,Phone and Siren.

I’m down in Middletown de, and we hear those sirens go off like 20 times a day.

There are people that would complain that thunderstorms disturb them.

For all of your saying you wouldn't want to hear the siren... Who was there first, you or the fire station? If the answer is a fire station, well tough luck, should have done your homework before moving. Sirens sound for a reason. You don't need to understand what that reason is, it simply means that the message is not for you.

Just about all of the volunteer fire departments have both pagers and a siren. The pagers and the siren go off for all vehicle accidents and fires no matter what time of the day or night it is. If it's a Ems call only, just the pagers go off. I'm from PA. It all differs from the state and county you live in.

If I heard that I'll be like aw hell no I'm trying to get some sleep if I saw the cops approaching the station I'll be like oh shit this is bad news.

Unless laws have changed in the last couple of years anytime emergency lights are active siren is required to be used unless on a divided highway most will kill siren in non congested residential neighborhood but if I new the neighbors were being bothered to the point that they were calling the cops I would use them every time I left the firehouse

unfortunately I have heard of some towns here in kansas where there are idiots that whine about the fire siren and about the lights and sirens on emergency vehicles and the fire and ems can't turn on the sirens in town

The last volunteer fire department siren around here went out of use years ago. Not much use for them in this day with fire pagers. In fact fire pagers have been used for 30 years at least.

SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?!?! I would want to hear all of the sirens, alarms, bells and whistles they had. Some people just have to have something to complain about and when you are so low that you are complaining about the fire department doing their job....you need to pack up & move to the top,of a mountain where no one will bother you!! My oldest son has been a volunteer firefighter for 20 years!!!! That means UNPAID!!! He has risked his life countless times for total strangers doing something he absolutely loves.......do not complain to me about sirens.

It is so loud and i can see why some residents would be abit annoyed with it going off while they are trying to sleep but it's there for a reason and set of for a reason, It wasn't like the fire fighter did it on purpose.
