In US news and current events today, new footage shows a police officer in Canada detaining a service animal from its owner while she was reportedly on her own property. A viral video released by Freedom Media Canada shows an Edmonton, Canada, officer confronting a woman outside her home while he held onto the collar of her service animal.
The officer said the dog wasn’t wearing any tags while it was on the sidewalk. The woman explained that they were on private property and initially refused to show her dog’s registration. The officer then threatened to arrest her for obstruction and confiscate the dog.

@@sevengrandbastion2724 Petting a service dog without the handler's permission could put the handler at risk because it is a distraction. Service dogs are trained to ignore distractions, but it's hard for them when they're being touched. Doing so is illegal because it puts the person's life in danger. Some dogs are trained to sense oncoming seizures and stuff like that. If you distract them, and they miss the opportunity to alert their handler, the person may suddenly collapse with no forewarning, putting them in danger and potentially killing them.

Ive seen people claim their dog is a service dog and the dog is not trained and doing whatever it wants. So no, i dont believe her. Some women even claim theyre pregnant when they think they're being arrested (looking at you Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon)

@@namogel67 you are a goof. He didn't see tags on the dog. He was trying to steal the women's dog although he didn't tell the woman he was trying to steal the dog. He knows what his real intentions were. What police officer out there finds interest in a dog on the sidewalk ? If that were the case police would spend every second of their day picking up dogs from neighborhoods. The officer liked the dog. He wasn't expecting the owner to be there. Ruined it for the officer. Police take what they want often. In this case, he wasn't able to take.

Why is it wrong for the officer to pet the dog? Sorry, I've never own one before. Edit: Thanks for the answers. Now I kinda get it. By petting someone else's service dog, the officer is tinkering with the dog's conditioning/training, and could potentially pose a risk to the owner as well as the dog. If that's the case, either the officer is ignorant, or he's simply harrasing the lady. These are the only explanation i can think of. Thanks again, everyone.

Actually any dog can be a service dog so even if you have a dog right now, you can register it as your own service dog so technically you can pet a service dog but of course only half of them as the others are raised from a young age to be a service dog and those you absolutely shouldn't touch. Either way after she said he's a service dog, he should have let go immediately because it isn't healthy for the dog if it is a trained service animal and if it's a regular untrained service dog, he had no right to touch it anyway because he's on her property. This whole thing is just crazy lol

Makes me sick how he is petting the dog. Isn’t “don’t touch/distract someone else’s service dog” like the first rule of interacting with service dogs? She’s telling him he’s stressing the dog out and he keeps nonchalantly touching it like nothing is wrong. It’s all a power thing with him.

I think he still wanted to punish her for having a dog without a tag in the sidewalk and the proof that it's a service dog was to avoid him from "confiscating" the dog. So he let her keep it and brought her the fine, rather than giving it to the dog control and taking her to the station. Still sucks though.

I can't imagine if this dog bit that cop, which the cop completely deserved. The dog would have been forcibly removed and killed just because that cop wanted to be a bully. What a jerk! He knows the police aren't going to pay her for a new service dog, he just wants a power trip on a couple of women who aren't a physical threat.

I completely agree. That little man was on a big power trip. It was obvious that the poor dog was distressed, his ears were down and he kept "checking with" his person. I don't know what her reason for having a service dog is, but the stress she was also put under surely wouldn't help it. I see that this is fairly old, did anything actually come out of it? That individual does not appear to have what it takes to be a good police officer and I don't think he has what it takes to be a good human.

That was why he already accused her of multiple things, even though it wasn't true. He was intentionally trying to escalate the situation. What an utter piece of human garbage the cop was. This is the same city Edmonton, where a large amount of police vehicles were trashed, due to the police speeding when driving. The person interviewed admitted, but tried to downplay it by saying, the police getting into high speed accidents were mostly younger guys, so they just have more testosterone. Utterly, stupid excuse.

@@TikiMDZ You know how she could have avoided that tense situation? By walking in to her house, and providing the dog's documentation or something to show its a service dog. Its the owner who made the incident long and unnecessarily tense. You know why he has to hold on to the dog? Because: - This lady could have a dog who is a danger to the community, out of control in a public area with no fence to restrain it and no leash. Officer just identified this potential danger. - If he lets go off the leash, she can take the dog inside and lock herself inside and it makes it almost impossible for him to continue assessing this situation and probably leaving a dangerous dog with an irresponsible owner free. - For all he knows next time this dog could bite off a kid's face, why? because to the officer it LOOKS like this owner is breaking the law with an out of control dog. In the end she did what she HAD TO. The law REQUIRES her dog to be leashed/tagged, or identifiable as a service dog when in public. The dog was in a public area and free to roam. If she had done the same thing minutes earlier the dog would not have had to go thorough that. And yeah, maybe he is not GREAT at handling animals, but he is TRYING. Its not like he is intentionally making the dog tense.

@@dragonflier4830 If the dog was on public property (2 steps away) he had every right. Again reasonable suspicion. And he was at least identifiable as a police officer by his uniform, and he did not refuse to identify, she didnt ask. Yeah its not great he didnt have his badge but it could be a simple mistake. And he had no way of knowing if she broke laws. If her dog was not a service dog she would have, but since her dog was not identified in PUBLIC, which is supposed to be, he had every reason to believe she had broken the law of having a non service dog loose.

Any update? Was this cop fired? he needs to be fired! My ex was disabled, had a service dog. If a cop came up and grabbed her dog, was stressing her and the dog further, two things are certain: 1- he'd damned sure be letting go of the dog and 2- he'd need backup. He's abusing his position, and I'd be suing him and the city.

A cop was responding to a call at my neighbors house and because he was afraid of my dog (who was in a the gated yard) threatened to shoot her. She wasn't barking or showing any aggression.

They should have called the cops on him they literally should have called 911 and said that somebody was on their property without permission trying to steal a dog and terrorize the owner that way when the other cop showed up they could be surprised but never ever tell them that the cops are here or if you have a sheriff's department call the sheriff's department on the cops call the state trooper on the local call the sheriff on the state trooper luckily most of these don't get along well but surely somebody else that showed up would know what this cop was doing was worse than just wrong and he knows he came in the yard he was trying to just pass that by while they were videoing train service dog will not get out the yard. It's the difference in between the little fake permits that the little snowflakes have so they can have their little doggy with them a service animal is not the same thing.

I'm not saying that this applies to anyone in these comments but it is amazing how some people would be so disturbed by this and want the officer to be fired but couldn't care less if people are being mistreated, falsely accused or certain lives are taken in the line of "duty". It's all too much and until they are held accountable for their actions and pay the time for their crimes nothing will change. No one should be above the law and everyone held to the same standard.😔

The fact this dog didn't pull back from a stranger's grip, shows it's an excellent dog; better than the humans involved. Had that dog been "resistant", 😢 this would have been entirely different ending. This is so wrong. Someone who trains police or service animals should have had a short interview vs repeating part of the video. The cop needs to learn not to not fuel himself on ego & control.
