This is the story of policeman who has been on the job for over forty years. And one of his duties is to look out for all of the officers under him cause he is the watch commander. And it seems that a lot of them have a lot of problems including the new lieutenant. And a 15 year veteran who's feeling the stress of the job. And at the same time he is being egged by the captain to retire cause he thinks he's too old. And his wife would like him to retire also.
Stars: Jack Warden, Gregg Henry, John D'Aquino

I love these Police Story movies, especially this one. It shows cops are human with flaws, faults and weaknesses like us. They're not heroes, but sometimes perform heroic acts.

He played the racist meathead "Gurgli" in "Four Friends" (1981), and he became a policeman in that movie too. He also got barfed on in the bar fight scene. Funny as heck!

Yep. This was made during a writers’ strike, so they dusted off some old Police Story scripts and remade them. It was the same reason they revived Mission: Impossible. I liked how they got a lot of the details right from the original series - the audio from the radio dispatcher at the beginning and end, the credits font. Sorry they didn’t use the original theme, though.

1988 is the year I entered law enforcement. Reagan was president. 28 year, 2 months, and 22 days is what I worked. Folks this is a drama--the police work aspects are crap really with the finger in the trigger well Charlie's Angels pointed towards the sky, or when he turned his back on the violator vehicle while returning to his police car after writing the ticket. The largest aspect of disbelief is the lack of union involvement and number of POBR (AB301) violations. Most of what you saw, workplace wise, is absolute fiction. For example, if you yell at a police lieutenant while telling them you aren't going to a psych appointment you would be relieved of duty and probably would get terminated for insubordination. At the very least you aren't working again until the doctor clears you and if they talk to the doctor you might never get cleared--or psychologically retired medically either. You'll end up in workers compensation limbo until July 1st. when the new fiscal year starts and they figure out T/O. The cops in 1988, the folks that trained me, created the Rodney King era of policing. We asked you once, told you the second time then made you do it. We didn't molly-coddle anyone and by todays standards use of force was much, much higher. A 40 year old cop in 88 was likely a Vietnam Vet, an early boomer or late silent generation (parents went to segregated schools). Those men were simple and complicated at the same time. After Rodney King stress retirements became easier and many of them left. By 1998 policing had completely changed and was relatively stable. The great recession hit (2008-2011) and by the time I retired at the beginning of 2017 I saw the same faces that were exorcised post-King.

In reality, after the scene where the lieutenant jumps on the Sergeant, the lieutenant and other management would gang up on him. He would go to a place he worked at for 40 years and would start to question his abilities because of the constant management bullying If he calls a lawyer they'll basically tell him "they never said they were treating you this way because of your age so you have no case." If he was black they would say "they never called you the N word and even if they did you can't prove it was done to intentionally inflict pain." (that's what a lawyer told me). If you're a woman you might get a settlement but you aren't getting Gretchen Carlson money..
