Colin Breen was an RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary, the police force in Northern Ireland up until late 90s) Officer during the period of extreme violence and murder known as "The Troubles".
Colin shared with me his own experiences of investigating murders, bombings and trying to maintain order during such a tremulous time. He spoke about being shot at twice by Loyalists and 3 times by Republicans, the methods of counter surveillance officers had to employe and arriving to, what was supposed to be, his own murder scene.
Colin told me many harrowing stories of the traumas and trials faced by members of the RUC including being blown up, injured and shot at as well the uphill battle of investigating such a huge number of murders with a police force stretched so thin.

For an RUC detective in the thick of it he didn't seem to notice anything, did he actually solve any murders? couldn't catch a cold. My brother and I were in Fort Jams Children's Home, the RUC came round and beat the shit out of my brother cause most of the home's staff were all connected to the security forces.

I went all through the troubles. I worked in hospitals and saw the results. The sight will never leave me, I am doomed to carry these images to my grave. I am fed up with all opinions on what happened, It's a bit like the bible, people twist history to suit themselves or their political views and unfortunately, they are aided and abated by the Likes of the BBC who wouldn't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Unfortunately, I have witnessed things that really happened and had to deal with many of the outcomes. Belfast has gone through a lot over the troubled time, but it is more like the Wild West. No law and order, drug barons people trafficking. If I were younger I would leave, but the only piece I'll get is when I am dead.

A very good interview I must say But I also must say how astonished I am that a man that spent so many years in the RUC knew so little about COLLUSION with loyalists Also how he knew so little about the interrogation of suspects Also how little he knows about beating confessions out of innocent people So I deduct from that man's interview that I'm not getting the full story That man was and is part of one of the most bigoted police forces in Western Europe So I certainly will not be buying his books And I also would like to add I have read a lot of books on the RUC Thanking you from co meath

Would you be as equally outraged at members of the Irish Defence Forces helping to train IRA members? The Republic being a safe haven for members of said organisation? It's the double standards that sicken me, you can only be a victim if you're a nationalist background

Like most journalists not going to the roots of the situation.This was a police force established and maned by sections of the Protestant community solely to maintain Prodestant dominance. Members of the english security services who committed murder in Ireland must be brought before the courts also members of the ruc who aided and abetted murder (we know this is evident from the ombudsman) these criminal individuals must be it must happen that they are charged before a court sitting in Ireland and they must be handed long prison sentences.
