Celebrities CAN wear whatever they want. Their careers are built on attention, positive or negative. But the real problems are school dress codes that police how girls dress. If a boy is having trouble focusing just because a girl wore a tank top, she shouldn't be the one punished.

I know it's because of youtube but there's something really ironic about talking about how women should be able to dress how they like, being allowed to show skin, and then having it censored

I got into a LOUD argument with my brother about this last night. He firmly believes that if a woman wears something sexy that she’s thirsty for male attention, and that she bears some responsibility for assault. Keep in mind that he believes that if she shows ANY cleavage then she’s just doing it distract men. He kept yelling this to me over and over, and truly refuses to see my point of view. I ended up just walking away from him.

I'm glad you highlighted the "if you wanted this type of woman, why didn't you marry _her_ instead" which i think is more of the problem. Men will tell women all the time not to try and "change" men, and that if we don't like the men we ended up with, we should "pick better." But then endlessly shame wives and mothers for not changing just about everything about themselves in order to fit the suddenly new standards. It's the blantant hypocrisy for me 😒

I used to date a guy who would always tell me that fat girls shouldn't wear shorts. I got to a point that i believed it, and refused to wear anything that was cute, like shorts or jumpers or similar things because I wasn't conventionally skinny. It took a long time for me to develop the self esteem to basically wear whatever I want and ignore criticism, so I applaud the women like Lizzo that wear whatever they want and preach self acceptance.

It’s about men wanting to control or humble women to make themselves feel more secure. It’s the same reason why men say they don’t like their girlfriends and wives wearing makeup.

This is a subject I've felt passionate about since the 1970's. There was a brief moment, when women believed they were firmly on the road to equality with men in the US. That changed about the time of the Reagan administration, and issues like the ERA were dismissed, we regressed in our attitudes towards women socially (as one aspect of this is covered in your video), and now; we've seen our reproductive rights attacked. I've even heard some politicians, mumbling over women's right to vote, for God's sake. I'm glad these women, as the focus of much public attention, are using it to make bold - and, I believe, empowering - statements in their fashion choices.

The irony that in the same video they have to censor the nipples because youtube considers it inappropriate

Men are also shamed when they wish to express themselves in feminine clothing or go out in women's wear. The shaming extends to both women and men, I think, to a point where nobody is really allowed to dress freely at all. Women can't seem to be taken seriously when showing skin or nipples, whereas men can't seem to be taken seriously when in leggings, skirts, heels, or lingerie. Everyone's a joke when it comes to clothing and fashion norms.

100 years ago, a woman was arrested because she showed too much skin on her swimsuit. Policing women on what they wear is not new. Let women wear what they want.

Feminism is a topic that needs more awareness on. Policing women is considerably unfair.

Interesting to note it's not just clothing on female-perceived bodies that is policed this intensely, but also female-perceived clothing on ANYBODY..? Think about all the hoohah that erupts whenever a red carpet guy wears a dress, or anything sparkly, or even just anything that might be considered a bit too colourful 🤦🏻‍♀️ Even though we've come a long way, true non-gendering of clothing and detaching moral judgement from garments still has a really long way to go. But at least the conversations keep being had!

It’s all about male power

There's a contradiction I cannot reconcile between 'wear what you want' and 'fashion as an expression of one's character/personality' Like i have been told off by family for not dressing formal enough for weddings or large family gatherings. My ex re-did my whole wardrobe cuz I dressed like a slob. At work, I've been treated differently based on how well I dressed that day. The brands I wear, hell the PHONE I use (iphone vs anything android) are all factors that influenced my status in others' eyes. Society uses what we wear to deem our status within it, that's policing. Maybe women face the brunt of it, but I've heard women friends tear down other women and men on what they wear FAR more often and with more venom than guys ever did. All the policing of what celebrities wear is led by fashion 'experts', majority of whom are women. To say it's an where women are the only victim driven only by men's desire to control seems a one-sided take.

Unfortunately, there are still some people (and also some women) who think that women need to dress in a certain way or shouldn't be allowed to dress whatever they want.

We're all here together in this life. We're all human. Dudes need to relax. We got plenty of our own stuff to figure out. Society is already messing us up by creating sides. Show each other your love and work together Violence and hate won't ever go away completely, but let's do what we can to limit it.

I still remember being told to “put effort into my fashion” by my sister because I refused to tuck in my shirt for her. She probably doesn’t remember it but I get angry at the idea that people make those kind of negative assumptions about me just because of how I choose to dress myself. Not everyone needs to get my taste but I hate that it becomes a criticism of me for it… 🙄

Generally I thought this was really good. I'm always super impressed by how these can highlight items I'm not aware of or haven't thought of. I do think though that there's a bit of a problem in framing these sort of discussions around a framework of progress and in focusing particularly on elite, individual influencers when thinking about fashion movements. That's not to criticise any of the influencers themselves, it's just that they're operating by default in a media ecosystem separate (though not entirely) from the same issues that impact every day clothing judgements. I can see the value in campaigning to change that media landscape to resist patriarchy, but I think the inherent power that the individuals in that structure have, mean that's likely to just change in a way that gives that specific individual more latitude, while not expanding out (which in itself potentially exacerbates the problem). It's the same issue I have with the progress narrative. Jumping back to quite a bit earlier than you deal with here, the switch from corsets to bras is often championed as an a example of women's liberation, but Joan Brumberg's 'Body Project' argues that actually it's significantly more complex and that by and large, the shift from corsets to bras was a shift away from a largely women-run industry of dress makers, towards a male-run industry of tailors and later of mass industrial production, which actually solidified patriarchy more. She also argues that they oft cited issue of tight lacing, was only really an issue that effected rich women (and often only rich young women) over a very short period of time. This isn't to say that we have moved in good directions or to dismiss any of the hard work being done, I just think we can't treat countering patriarchy as a linear or automatic process. We need to be alert to the shifting apparatuses of capture operating to reinforce the problems (as seen in the double standards brought up at the beginning, which essentially enable media reporting to target any woman they want to as it's impossible to fulfil all the stipulations at once) and we need to move outside of the focus on just individual choice ethics, to disrupt the wider narratives of patriarchal control, subject and object, gaze, and communities of meaning around clothing. That wasn't going to be as manifesto-y when I started typing it. I still think the video does a really good job, I just wonder how we can expand this beyond the celebrity individualism to consider the way we think about clothes, skin, bodies and gender more pointedly. I worry that if we don't do that, we'll just end up circling back with the very language we used to fight misogyny co-opted and deployed as yet another double standard.

50 year olds wearing see through dresses as a form of self acceptance and celebration that would be a radical move, not 20 year olds with socially acceptable bodies and youth on there side

It's important to include the concept of internalized misogyny in the conversation. Women can judge and police other women based on how they think a man will view that woman, and by extension themselves. This goes for women who think "sexy" clothing in other women creates "competition" and women who think that same clothing demeans all women. Some of this is about what men want, but also, some of it is about what women think men want.

I think this video did a great job of explaining the issues with policing what women wear without looking down on people who critique fashion as an art form. I love fashion and I love listening and contributing to discussions about fashion, not in a way to judge the people who wear the clothes, but to look at the clothes as uniquely functional works of art. Great job!!

Sounds like Jonah Hill is caring around a lot of insecurity maybe from the way he was treated it is bigger days. And the only way that he can still do that insecurity is by projecting control on a woman….

I've been on a few end of year school trips recently - one to a theme park and one to Paris, which involved Disneyland. My head of year specifically told the girls that they had to be sensible and not wear too revealing. He didn't tell the boys to be sensible

Men too serve the male gaze. Men are taught to seek women who will help men prove themselves to other men, & some men live like there is a socially 'superior' man following them everywhere, critical of everything they do.

Most people don't care what anyone wears. You could make the same argument as shown in the video for magazines. Did the magazine write about appearances before you were interviewed by them? Yes? I don't have that much problem with "fashion police" thing, they comment on people who show themselves for living, strutting on red carpet is a part of an actor/actress's job. Also Cate Blanchett calling out the cameraman for showing the whole figure: why not show the whole figure? It's all very pretty from top to bottom. Her dress was totally non-provocative. Idk, part of how “radical” fashion is, is because people will always find fault in the way people choose to present themselves. Basing a movement around other people accepting your fashion, seems a little… frivolous. The whole point of fashion, to me, has always been NOT CARING what the naysayers say- not demanding that they stop saying nay. We ARE allowed to wear anything we want (so long as our genitals aren’t showing), but we aren’t allowed to wear anything we want without social consequences. This video feels like the reverse of conservatives saying “you’re not allowed to say anything anymore!” When they are, they’re just being pussies about social consequences. Wear what you want. Don’t expect anyone to be okay with it, and stop giving a shit when they aren’t.

I think we need to let go of the notions that freedom to do what be please means we are also free from judgement and that criticism is someone attempting to exert power over us. No one is stopping us women from wearing what we please. The problem is that some women don’t want to be judged. And we will never live in a judgement free world. So we need to let the opinions of others roll off us and stop calling it oppression, because people only have as much power over us as we give them.

I would love just to wear something that I like without having to think of what will happen if I wear it like how would other teen girls think of me and how boys would react 😅

I feel like before 1920 it was a lot easier to get dressed without thinking or worrying about it. Everyone wore the same style of clothes. There were way fewer options so there was less criticism.

this is a world full of fashion advice, and a lot of it is flippant and fast. what's the difference between merely saying "you look like crap in that outfit" and "policing" clothes? i am fine with revealing clothes, but a lot of those sorts of outfits also look awful, as clothing, on a particular person's body, because it's a style that designers are not reallly comfortable with, and clothes look differently when wearing something in public lights than in front of a mirror.

Mostly. You are able to. There needs to be some dress limits and dress codes and for when little and young children are around. I am not the prudest woman to ever live, but there are ages when they are not ready.

It drives me nuts how successful male actors get to talk about their lives, their loves, and themselves, whereas successful actresses can't because everyone is so fascinated by their wardrobe and won't ask them about or give them time to talk about anything else. The sad part, is that most of that endless, privacy eroding coverage of female celebrities' bodies is targeted for consumption by other women.

Unpopular opinion but I don’t think women are oppressed when it comes to how we dress. People regardless of gender will always have an opinion. That’s a human thing. You will hear that you dress too slutty and you will also be shamed for dressing modestly but regardless of what people’s opinion are we can still dress however we want. Hence us not being oppressed when it comes to how we dress. We just have to deal with the fact everyone has an opinion

This is simply not an argument that can be reduced to black or white simplifications. Women aren't dehumanised by what they wear...that's a very emotive term that is better suited to refugees and victims of war. Women are objectified and classified by what they wear, as are men to a less obvious degree. Notions of style and taste are timeless concepts when it comes to fashion and that's not going to change. Women have been pushing past resistance so they can wear whatever they want, for the last 100+ years. Its not a new thing. Whatever becomes normalised, becomes a commodity almost immediately. There are much deeper issues that feminism hasn't even begun to address.

This is the first time I've ever come back to comment on a Take video, because this one raised some questions I just can't answer. My wife and I have a very egalitarian marriage with a lot of nudity. We rarely wear clothes at home (we live in a very hot place), and we're both quite overweight, so we both have bodies a lot of other people wouldn't want to see naked. We're also both pornography users, have been since before we got married, and don't try to hide that from each other. I come home from work to her looking at porn all the time; I've never tried to stop her. I don't seek control over my wife or any other woman. We watched this video together last night. Her reaction was mostly to comment on the various outfits and the ideas expressed. I did too, but I also wanted to go look up the blurred parts to see the naked women. I haven't, at least not yet. I still might. The question is, is that disrespectful? If a woman is wearing something because she wants to, is it okay if that still happens to appeal to men? If a man is valuing a woman as another full person and not just treating her as a body meant to please himself, is it disrespectful or anti-feminist if the body pleases him too? Any time I comment on a famous woman's body online in any way, I'm met with a bunch of nasty responses assuming I'm motivated by attitudes or desires I don't really have. If I notice something and point it out, my comment is always taken to contain judgment, even if it's just a statement of fact. So I don't know how I'm supposed to respond. If she chooses to put her intimate parts out there, for her own personal reason, am I allowed to enjoy seeing them or not?

I feel like female nudity needs to become commonplace in daily life. Seeing a woman topless should be no different than a shirtless man. Nudity in general should be more commonplace and accepted. We were born naked, after all.

Well women are lucky they can wear anything they like at the same time men wear jeans, pants, trouser, shirt in their entire life they choices are limited so they are jelouse of women because of this so they make noise is obvious. Men so focused on looking masculine is their problem.

There is nothing wrong with wanting your partner to dress differently when she's in a committed relationship vs single. If a man is not comfortable with his girlfriend/wife wearing certain kinds of clothing, that is okay: talk about, and either she agrees, he changes his mind, or they break up. It would also be okay for a woman to be uncomfortable with her boyfriend/husband dressing in certain ways. Just deal with these things as a mature adult: communicate and compromise.

Some men are so hypocritical about their spouses too. They want them one way when they're dating, then they get married and they want them to change. If they do change then they complain that their wives aren't sexy anymore and/or go cheat with someone like who their wife used to resemble. psh.
