Kermit Weeks flies his Polikarpov Po-2 Soviet biplane on a beautiful afternoon. The plane, made primarily of wood, and fabric covered, was originally designed and built in the late 1920's as a training and light utility aircraft. In World War II they were used for liaison, light attack, nuisance raider and propaganda aircraft... complete with microphone and loudspeaker. The PO-2 is well known as a safe and reliable aircraft.
Check out the Kermie Cam video of this same flight on Kermit Weeks KZfaq channel... www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrgRxa...

Women pilots flew many different types of missions. Delivering aircraft from the factory to front line bases was one of the most important. The Po-2 was also used to deliver messages and medical supplies, low level reconnaissance and artillery observation, evacuation of wounded, weather observation, etc...

Wow! That is a beautifull sounding aircraft, lovely popping sound too, looks like she flies real smooth & slow? I'm amazed this aircraft really has some great charm to it maybe it feels like a good old first world war plane. Surely its incredibly hard to find parts especially for an engine of such an age? Thanks so much for making this video!

I came to FoF about 10 or 12 years ago and was allowed to take a lot of pictures of inside this panes cockpit as well as the exterior so it could be modeled into IL2 Sturmovik WW2 flight game. Wonderful plane with an outstanding history.

It's an awesome plane I'd never known about before. Several interesting things about are of course the 5 cylinder engine, but also the look of the N- type Cabane struts, and when it's coming at you, you can see the inter-plane struts are splayed apart at the top, parallel with the Cabane struts. The dual cockpits are awesome as you could take a friend. Too bad they are rare, like most soviet creations it isn't really pretty but it looks like a lot of fun to fly.

These old WW2 airplanes are very cool as they are, but it is the history connected to them that makes them really special and worth preserving. Specially when they are still taken out and flown so people can really get an idea how they looked and sounded like.

The history of the Night Witches is from World War 2 and not World War One. They were from the 588th Bomber Regiment and they started in 1942. These airplanes were first built in 1927, after World War One so I guess you could say that it is technically a World War Two aircraft.
