The unlikely alliance helping Poland ditch coal ► • The unlikely alliance ...
Poland has a deep and historic relationship with coal, importing huge amounts despite producing yet more locally. With the energy crisis biting, fuelled by the war in Ukraine, the country’s government withdrew restrictions on burning materials and subsidised coal, creating huge air quality issues, particularly in the industrial south - reversing 10 years of hard work by air pollution campaigners in the process.
The Guardian visits southern Poland to witness first hand the impact of this decision on affected communities, meeting the ostracised miners at the front of the culture wars, and joining climate activists visiting towns in the region that are fighting back against fossil fuels and air pollution.

Dirty air is not related to pollution caused by Polish industry. When in the 1990s Polish industry ceased to exist, air pollution was as bad as it is today, even though the plants were not working. Geographically, Poland is located in a place where, thanks to the terrain, "thanks" to the winds from the west, all pollution from Western Europe stops in the Polish sky. This is the main cause of unhealthy air in Poland but not Polish industry.

Dude, it takes about 15 years to build one hospital here or a year to renovate a single road. Do you expect nuclear plants popping out of the ground when we want to?

Build factories to produce alternative energy next to the coal mines and incentivise people to swap jobs. Many who want to keep coalmining fear that without it they would not have jobs. They aren't committed to the coal, just to the employment.

Can’t just take things away without a replacement. Like what are those people gonna do for work and what energy will replace coal?
