I clean tarnishing off one of my Magna-Cut knives and talk a little about wet forming sheaths and handle materials.

You're the only complaint I've heard of magnacut staining. Spyderco uses it in the salt line because it's showing to be as stainless or close ss lc200n and H1

Sorry to see that also happened to your Micarda Handles. The one crack from just using water looks like it cracked right through the pin too. Maybe you should check into what kind of dish soap you use that can physically pierce/crack Pins that hold that handle together.

That's not entirely true, that they would have to deliberately mislabel the knife on purpose. Someone could have pulled the wrong flat stock, mistakes happen 🤷. You realize Spyderco is now using magnacut in their saltwater series. Saltwater is definitely more corrosive than tap water, unless you live in Flint Michigan 🤔. Legend has it, Flint Michigan tap water completely dissolved a "Vanax super clean" knife in 2.8 seconds 😳🤷.

Update: I watched your final conclusion on your other video, and I think you are correct on your theory, it seems to make sense 👍. I do want to say though it is possible to grab the wrong flat-stock as long as it's the same thickness stock👍. It wouldn't necessarily have to be a intentional nefarious act on Bark Rivers part.

Did you put this on the stones to reprofile it, get rid of the burnt steel yet? IF yes, how does it sharpen compared to other super steels? Takes more time, any difficulties? or maybe sharpens easier than expected, like some super steels do?

That’s why I always completely Saran Wrap any knives or guns that I wet form leather around

Yes, I agree. That is the first and only one I have wet formed, and will definitely use Saran wrap if I do it again. These two I just got are the only other two I have that have sheaths in a style I think would lend itself well to wet forming. Maybe I'll do them. I haven't decided. Do you put oil or anything on the blades under the Saran wrap, or just leave it dry?

@@MountainLife1 I’m sure oil wouldn’t hurt but it’s not necessary. The Saran Wrap ought to keep it dry enough

Yep 6 layers of Saran wrap just make sure the Saran wrap is laying nice and flat around the handle so it doesn't account for any extra space.

I think you said you were planning on keeping them, regardless what steel it is, because a) you like A2 and b) the knives are well made. Is the A2 version the same price as the magnacut knife? Secondly, if they are in fact well made knives, why are you even having this problem? You're a much more patient man than me. Watching this and seeing a fella gets 2 blades misbehaving, I'm afraid I'd scoot them right back and never buy another. They are spendy knives, aren't they? (I have the Aurora in 3 V too. Great knife. It has no staining on the blade whatsoever.)

You make some good points here, and maybe I should have sent them back. I'll answer your questions, though. There has never been an A2 version of these knives, but there is A2 in the regular thickness Bravo. Any of these that I have seen run 200 and something. I might have paid a few dollars more, but still in the 200 and something range. What I mean by well made is that the fit and finish is near perfect on these two knives. I have made another video about what I think happened with these knives. I will download it soon. I am not mad or aggravated at all about the tarnishing, I am just putting it out there to let everyone know this is an issue before they buy Magna-Cut. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I hope by making theses videos I will inform someone of the Magna-Cut issues before they spend their hard-earned money.

Thank you for your service. I understand your hesitation, and I'm thinking the same way now. I have 15 Bark River Knives, but it would be hard for me to buy another one.

Yup, I won't buy any more from them because of that. Also, their quality control has taken a real nose dive in recent years. Completely inexcusable for the price. On the other hand, every LT Wright knife I have ever bought was flawless from the factory

They burn edges by grinding and sharpening without water. They micro quench which isn't good either . also lots of bad stores on the forums from bark river too. Bad company overall. They look nice though.

That steel is Magnacut. DLT wouldn’t risk their reputation on a steel swap. I think that rust from water and a meat patina are different categories. I have a different Bark River model in MC. I’ll cut some red meat tomorrow and see if I get the same patina

dang,, who cares if our carry knives get a patina,, I have a Bravo 1 LT magna-cut that I carry and use every day,, but I will admit my blade is scuffed and scratched,, but has not tarnished or rusted,, course I wipe it clean every time I use mine

Some people might not care if their knife gets a patina. I've got plenty of A2 and other stuff that has a patina to one degree or another. What most people do care about is buying a product that doesn't perform the way it's supposed to. I'm glad your knives are performing well. Thanks for watching.
