Ok but also like the idea of making literal the idea that a woman wants to create a “clone” of herself via having grandchildren (and shoving another young girl into the position that she herself resents being put into in the first place to do so) is such an interesting concept cause like-that’s literally what so many grandmothers end up doing. Trying to spoil & play-act their dreams with their grandchildren while shoving domesticity onto their daughters-in-law that they see more so as a vessel for that purpose than another girl that once had dreams.

One thing I really liked about this movie was the lack of pandering to audiences that aren't necessarily already familiar with the cultural references. It was unapologetically authentic in telling the story from a british pakistani muslim woman standpoint. I think the fact that there weren't any "sidebar" moments to explain foreign vocabulary or traditions showed progress distinguishing it from poc media that has made it to the big screen in the recent past (not to say that this is the first/only one to do it).

It's kinda funny, bc that is exactly how it SHOULD be. I don't remember any white movie I've seen where there was an aside in every single other language to help non-Americans (or non-adjacent). Almost like... Culture is better when it just gets to be instead of farting it down to the dumbest hick audience lol

As a queer Muslim art kid from a Pakistani background that had a visceral reaction when my eldest sister got married, this movie hit. It was my favorite film of the year, it is required watching for everyone in my life, I accept no criticism of it when brought up in literally any conversation. Thank you for making this video, it feels like no one outside of my community really saw it so it's always nice to see people put a spotlight on this incredible movie. That being said, the second movie that's even come close is Bottoms. Just saw it last night and that theater experience was phenomenal, everyone was laughing and enjoying it at the right times, it was magic. No two movies have ever made me feel seen like this. What a fantastic time for desi gay nerds to be alive.

I actually really enjoyed the action scenes in polite society because of how clearly they're inspired by/referencing old martial art movies like crouching tiger hidden dragon which we even see a poster of in ria's bedroom!! it also made for really beautiful shots when they were fighting in their wedding outfits

i completely agree! personally, i loved everything about the movie but so many critics (both professional and everyday critics) seemed to have a problem with the story's structure and with the action sequences. i didn't have a problem with either lol but i wanted to acknowledge some of the discourse surrounding it too

I specifically really liked the action sequence where Riya and Lena are fighting upstairs in their house - there’s something so awful and visceral about a blowout argument with someone who knows you that well that the physical violence of that choreography captured in a not-too-serious but still really resonant way!

I love that the parents aren’t shoving things down their girls throats and screaming at them. It’s very subtle the constant pressure, which is much more realistic, I think. Even with parents that love you, or especially with those, it’s hard to push against what they want. It would be easier for Lena and Rhea to push back on their parents if they were easy parents to hate.

“Your cat’s a slag!” Is my favorite quote from this movie looooool Really had a blast watching it! The plot twist was very unexpected, especially since Raheela was giving “head auntie in charge” energy, having a beautiful home, handsome doctor son and being the envy of others. But I think in some ways when I think about it the plot twist makes sense, cuz in a lot of non Europeans cultures (I’m East African muslim myself) we’re meant to put on a front in society and make it seem like everything in our life is perfect. Raheela can’t complaint about her life to anyone cuz she’s living the “dream” of the other aunties she’d be coming across an ungrateful. So her villain arc in hindsight isn’t surprising. So for Raheela to be having the same internal struggles as Riya was very interesting. I know so many older traditional women in my own life who publicly put on a front and make it seem like they’re happy with how their life turned out and try to enforce the traditions onto the younger generation but when you speak with them privately they’ll open up about all the things they wish they got to pursue like education or a career but they couldn’t because of societal expectations.

Are they actually well choreographed? That's kinda what I assumed was being criticised. EEAaO had amazing fight scenes, which I was absolutely not expecting. I feel like, if I go in not expecting good fight scenes, I'm more willing to be like: yeah that's alright. Whereas if you make me think there's going to be some wild Scott Adkins triple spin kick, and then there isn't, that's gonna be a little upsetting.

Honestly, "the trap of tradition" is basically how I describe conservative ideology and why I believe it to be an invalid one to hold. Traditions arent always good, some of them either become outdated with time or, in many cases, straight up werent good to begin with. Conservatives fail to realize that many traditional values they hold are restrictive and repressive, especially when you want to force that upon society through government and laws. Sorry to get a bit political there, but I felt it poingnant to mention.

Exactly, so be a moderate and incorporate positives from both sides in your thinking.
@scytheslash
@scytheslash 11 ай бұрын
Conservatives KNOW their beliefs are restrictive and repressive even if it harms them. That's the point of it all. It is one way of maintaining their in-group identity, as people who suffer doing the greatest good possible i.e. "suffering" to maintain their status. That's what makes them a permanent victim over a society they mostly call the shots in. Since this is ridiculously hard to do for anyone else without their money and resources, they then get a huge group of people to prod, poke, humiliate and lord over. Failure to meet arbitrary standards means they get to punish those weaker who aren't even trying as hard as them. It's fun and it's ancient.
@ramenbomberdeluxe4958
@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 11 ай бұрын
@@scytheslash I appreciate, among everything else you said, the part where you said "and it's ancient". I have this really dumb nitpick and pet peeve when people talk about conservative ideology and say "oh you just wanna take us back to the 50s", when obviously this crap goes WAY farther back than they realize, but they probably know. Regardless, I greatly appreciate how you worded this, and your reply in general!
@janaekelis
@janaekelis 11 ай бұрын
this applies to the world stage tbh. ive heard some very horrible Conservative traditions from many cultures. also many traditions target women in a negative way. we know now that women are just as equal mentally as men and can have whatever desires they please. traditions create a stale cycle, which is just unhealthy for a nation's progress

while i totally agree re: the expectation for marriage for women esp "post" education, i will say - as a pakistani - that marriage is the standard for everyone. it's very much a cultural position that your life isn't complete without marriage, it's why even though salim's life is "perfect" there's still this whole to-do abt getting him married and none of the aunties question it. the eid soiree being just a pretense for matchmaking is so expected that my family and i watching it didn't question it for a second lmao. his codependency w/ his mother is such a fun thing to poke at as well and tho that's a conversation i wouldn't necessarily have outside of the community, seeing it play out so badly in a movie was pretty gratifying lmao.

Your post about this video coming up was what made me watch it a day ago, and it's now up there with Nimona for my "identify too much oh no" favorite thing so far this year. I adored it, I evangelized to friends immediately after watching, I also said I thought it was (personally) perfect. I am not a muslim woman, but I am a sadsack failed art student older sibling, and family conversations at my age are a minefield of well what do you do, are you ever getting married, etc etc, so I very personally felt for Lena (and the way Salim charmed her after she struggled to answer about her career was so wonderfully insidious, "we never let ourselves just be" was so calculated that even if he hadn't had an evil plan, that was unsettling), and even without clones, the pressure of older generations wanting you to make the lives they wished they'd had, regardless of what you want, is... oof. This was great. I'm so glad I watched it. Even the goofy-looking action, I loved it in part because it *was* goofy. Ria wants to be a stuntwoman! Drawing so much attention to the silliness of movie fights felt cohesive. I've also never seen a movie where I loved every single female character without reservation to this degree. Reheela's evil laugh alone was fantastic. We Are Lady Parts has now been shuffled onto the "when my brain works for tv series again" list. Thank you.

I grew up in a Muslim family and went to see this in the theater with a friend of mine who was raised really strictly Christian and we both were blown away by the fact that these kinds of stories are getting to be told. Meanwhile two of the white dudes who were also in the theater with us were just loudly criticizing it's technical flaws 🙃

This is also my favourite film of the year, so great to see your take on it. I wondered if it would translate well outside of the UK, as it seemed so quintessentially British; so its great to see it worked for an international audience. Nadia Manzoor is such an important voice to be heard. This is only the second film I can recall with a British Asian woman at the centre (the first being Gurinder Chadha's excellent Bend it Like Beckham) and both share a genre defying and timeless quality. I hope that we don't have to wait another 20 years for the next voice to finally make it through to tell us the stories we want to hear.

If anything bothered me it was the fact that Lena's arc was unresolved at the end and it didn't really address what she was going to do (since there was a reason she fell in love with Salim), yet I can see why you liked that not everything was tied up in a neat bow. I also loved the supporting cast and would watch a whole video from you about why Clara and Alba are awesome if you felt like doing it xD I also loved that Ria's nemesis was redeemable and turned out to be pretty cool. i started watching this & then i stopped to watch polite society & !!!!!!!1 it was so good !!! i loved it sm & i loved hearing ur thoughts about. i also adored we are lady parts when i first watched it when it came out..... might have to rewatch it now 👀👀 i loved alba and clara sm too !!! also i gotta say as someone who is often bored by all the marvel etc action scenes i mostly found all these scenes interesting, compelling, enjoyable to watch. they felt like a loving way to emphasise the craft of stunts & action sequences and they were part of the plot in a way that felt meaningful & not just sooo boring and like macho and showy !

I really enjoyed this movie, but the scene where the older sister admits that she gave up on being an artist and settled for an expected life because she "wasn't good enough," while you are still living with your parents, trying to publish a book and write a pilot for that fantasy series you hope to make... yeah, I might not be anything like that girl (quite the opposite, in fact), but that put me in a funk in a way I wasn't expecting. So thank GOD Ria's two friends were as funny as they were. II needed that.

My ex-partner was born into the Muslim faith but left cause he was gay and I wish we got to see more of those kinds of "taboo" stories 🤷🏽‍♀️

Shout out to the Plaza Theatre. They consistently host the best film events. Especially when they work with Videodrome 💕

I'm Jewish myself and while I am 100% aware that muslim and jewish cultures are different (to an extent), it's disturbing how well it captures my fears. I'm already struggling with the concept of getting pregnant before I'm 30 (I'm 20). But that in addition to me working out my asexuality is a complicated matter for me. Again I know this film isn't for my demographic but fuck me it's eerie.
