Fossil fuels, like oil and coal, have been at the center of a heated debate. But what's often missing is a balanced perspective. Let's break it down.
First, fossil fuels are a form of hydrocarbon energy derived from ancient plant and animal remains. They store energy efficiently and power our world, but burning them releases CO2, contributing to climate change.
So why the vilification? It boils down to how we think about them. Many focus solely on their negative impact, ignoring their role in human progress.
Think of it like this: Imagine if we judged people based only on their flaws, ignoring their strengths. That's what happens with fossil fuels. We need to shift the conversation to consider both their benefits and drawbacks, fostering a more informed debate and paving the way for sustainable energy solutions.

I so appreciate this! It truly speaks to the need for collaborative-minded conversations (I won't call them debates) that include voices from both sides (all sides). Thank-you!

Collaborative minded debates? What are you going to debate? That the planet is not warming? That sea levels are not rising? That we are losing freshwater marshes to the sea? That salt water is infiltrating aquifers? The fossil fuel industry has been trying to suppress evidence of climate change for decades. They have used their wealth to suppress evidence ofthe damage of burning fossil fuels. Oil spills decimate natural areas, mountain tops are leveled to get to the coal. And even here, comments that disagree with Alex are deleted, including mine. So how can you have a conversation when the side whose opinion you don't like gets suppressed? All Alex is doing is trying to sell the makeup to put on the pig so that the ignorant media and public buy what they are selling...the idea that FF are actually good. The industry wants to make money selling fossil fuels but they don't want to pay for the damages. We have to pay for the damages. That's called a subsidy.

15:40 15:45 When people first appeared on Earth, they found themselves on a great big ball of garbage, and, ever since then, they have been turning that garbage into resources.

we have passed "peak oil" so we need to develope alternatives anyway- and we have the 6th great extinction occuring- so we DO need cleaner energy alternatives- and we do need to tax all forms of pollution- and tax the super wealthy. then use these funds to help develope these alternatives that average citizens can use.

Exactly. They have profited the most from. the exploitation of fossil fuels and have done the most to create an economic situation where 'renewable energy' is still very expensive. Alex talks about himan flourishing. So what do we do? Exploit the remaining natural areas so humans everywhere can continue to flourish? Let's drill for oil and copper in Alaska. Let's continue to chop down the rainforest so that wealthy nations can have cheap burgers. Let's not worry about anything but humans flourishing, humans in first world countries to be specific. And when there is a drought, when the aquifers do run dry, when New Orleans and become urban islands, then what? When many species go extinct because of himan flourishing is that a good thing? No more polar bears, no more Emperor penguins, no more rhinos or African elephants...is that what you call human flourishing?

Alex should understand that transitioning from one technology to another often comes with initial high costs but then costs decline dramatically. Look at LEd bulbs. Used to be incredibly expensive, now very inexpensive.

So why should everyone else have to pay for the damage and prevention of damage from burning fossil fuels because those with vested interests in fossil fuels want t reap the benefits? Military bases, roads need to be moved at considerable expense coastlines need to be replenished

or reinforced. Water tables get salt infiltration. Wetlands disappear. Cities flood. We all pay while others reap benefits of FF money

We burned fossil fuels for a long time and have known the consequences for the past fifty years. To brush off future damage from FF as 'We can engineer our way out if it' is naive and of the same mentality as Alex mentioned of people who have negative views of Jews. It's a refusal to accept evidence that clashes with your views of waht you want to believe.

Disagree with his argument. He's using too many words to justify his stance. The climate impact is undeniable-just visit areas heavily affected by deforestation and drilling, where evidence abounds. The devastation is real.
@treejay7283
@treejay7283 24 күн бұрын
So your analyses can be clear, how is deforestation being connected to optimizing fossil fuel efficiency? Or "devastation" of drilling areas related to excess atmospheric carbon challenges? It's just hard to follow the leaps...like saying when you go to the county dump what you observe is proof that the impact of junk food is "undeniable." Metabolic syndromes are real, after all. I found the definition in all terms extremely useful. While it does make for a whole lot of words, ultimately the words are more (specific, pointed,) meaningful in contrast to BS-befuddlement of vague yet hackneyed jargon in these subject areas. I would like to understand how you are contrasting your factual understandings to the interviewees, nonetheless.

Deforestation happens when you need room to build a giant useless solar farm, or when you're in a poor country that uses wood as their primary energy source. Coal doesn't require any deforestation, and the extra carbon in the atmosphere helps plants grow.

How is it that coral reefs were degraded by over-fishing techniques, toxic pollution, dense tourism, & hurricanes - but today it's exclusively excess atmospheric carbon attributed exclusively to human energy consumption?

The Great Barrier Reef hit record breaking size in 2023. This is due to warmer water. Coral is a tropical species that survives only in tropical water. Warmer water means more coral.

@@davidregen1358 You are the most ignorant person I've ever talked to. Go to Google and type in, "2022 record size great barrier reef." You will see reports from Yale and CNN stating that the Great Barrier Reef has recorded the highest amount of coral in 36 years. You have so little knowledge of science it is beyond belief. You are so dense that even after I tell you the facts, you deny them without even going to Google to verify. Coral thrives in warm waters. That's why all the coral is found around the equator where the water is warmest. Bleaching is a regular occurrence that happens every few years. It's part of a healthy system. After bleaching, it all grows back, but larger each time because the water is warmer. I actually can't get over how ignorant you are. Google it. Look it up. Look it up on Google. Go to Google. Type in 2022 record levels Great Barrier Reef. Look it up. Omg. How can you be this dense. I told you a fact and you denied it even after you had a chance to look it up. Look it up. It's on Google. Stop spamming platitudes. Look it up. Look it up. It's right there. Just type it in. You are anti-science.

It is natural for coral reefs to bleach and then return. Nothing to see here. Maybe provide you source of ocean acidification, not happening.
