long time listener first time caller but the conversation about the podcast being like chatting about politics with friends in the pub is exactly why i listen! it feels v different to other politics channels e.g. novara where the news is described to you as though you don't know about it, and what i appreciate about p*bcast is feeling like i'm in the loop and just hearing pals chat about it instead. love the show and all of you

A bottle of red to the wind but a brilliant demonstration of ambitious, respectful of each other journalists whom want to create original content while also educating us all on politics of the day. As a previously avid talk radio listener, thanks for providing a way for me to consume what is always quite a grim UK political review in a way that is contains honest humour and relatable commentary and mindless escapism which removes me from the stark reality that if some right wing political party becomes the governing power in the UK, we're all going to need a boat to get the hell out of here. I wish you all a great Christmas.

I'm an American and mostly listened to LBC when i first started paying attention to uk politics. Was such a relief to find Politics Joe! Still listen to James O'Brien and Sangita Myska but like you said, sometimes you need to have a layer of, idk the right term but i suppose humanness and of course humor. Plus Politics Joe tends to cover things in a way that others don't and they miss the bits of info that are helpful for when I'm trying to map out similarities and connections between the conservatives and far right in both our countries. Cheers and happy holidays from the States 🇺🇸💙🇬🇧

I've been heavily catching up on poljoe after being too busy last month and just watched this glorious mess of an episode over a 3 day stint. For sure my favourite podcast, some complain about the tangents you go down but that's why I love it. It really does capture that "mates at the pub" vibe that Ava talked about. Congrats on 100+ episodes gang Also Oli, nice Mitchell & Webb reference right at the end there, 10/10

I really like the point made by Ollie around 1:51:00 - about being able to empathise with the two sides of not just political debate but any debate. Although it can be infuriating when someone has a completely different point of view to yours, you can understand they are presenting their side with as much conviction in their own minds as you are. If you can understand that, then you can listen to what theyre saying (to a point obviously) theres never going to be a utopian world where everyone agrees and its black and white, but it would be a lot better and more agreeable if people were just able to LISTEN. Also the end section of this was pure glorious chaos 😊

I think that the Dugdaddy's take on reparations is quite one-dimensional. Both Slavery and colonisation were extractive by nature. Reparations is not a case of guilt, it's a case of the benefits that we in the UK especially enjoy because of the extractive nature of slavery. The UK economy was built from slavery/colonisation, the wealth created and resources extracted fueled the industrial revolution which has made us a prosperous nation today with high living standards. The now-liberated countries were in turn heavily exploited and underdeveloped, making them poor countries today with low living standards. We in the UK all benefit from this to some extent (even relatives of slaves who live in the UK today), regardless of whether our bloodlines played a hand in it or not. We are rich BECAUSE they are poor, they are poor BECAUSE we are rich.

Interestingly, I think I sort of agree with both Ed and Ava on the Jeremy Corbyn question near the end. It's super interesting to see Ava place a decent chunk of the blame for certain parts of his public image on the way his advisors/team pushed his image, and agree that he was done a disservice in how the project failed to dispel those ideas. That said, I agree with Ed that the left here cannot move forward while we're still fixed on the past. Especially with the state of Labour right now under Starmer, if we're going to rebuild influence and be able to push our ideas again, we need to be looking at how to rebuild the movement in a way that learns from the past. In terms of who is at the front of that, I don't know if anyone is a perfect equivalent (although I'm a big fan of Clive Lewis), but I also think that one of the key failings we need to work on is not tying it so much to one person. Because to a lot of people it was always CORBYNism, which meant that Corbyn's downfall as leader meant the movement went with him. Next time we need to build a movement more focused on ideas and not built on the person at the top, so if we lose again we can regroup much more effectively.

Planting a flag on policy rather than politics, years of dire straits does nothing but distracts
@OneFaintingRobin6 ай бұрын
@@NJking Fair enough, but what we did is plant a flag on an individual, which is probably the most volatile thing in politics. That's my point; we can't make the movement reliant on one person like it kind of was with Corbyn.
