Would of loved to hear Harry talk more about his tax piece genuinely had great ideas
@davidbates305711 ай бұрын
Indeed. It felt almost a little ridiculed, though I get that these podcasts are very laid back, and that's not necessarily a bad thing But honestly, Capital Gains tax should be a massive talking point. It's the number 1 means in which the ultra rich are very literally robbing the country. Hell, I'd go further in that it shouldn't be equalised at all, they should in fact pay way more in Capital Gains tax than in Income, because capital gains earnings are made by literally doing nothing but riding the value waves. The idea that by simply owning capital and sitting on your arse you pay less tax on the money you gain than somebody sweating for 40 hours a week should be abhorrent even in Conservative ideology. And it's even worse than that, because 20% is the flat rate, but as with all rich policy, there are plenty of loopholes where they can reduce it even more, what are essentially fraudulent loss claims, or moving stuff around into ghost companies offshore, or even creating dummy companies where their children and extended family members -- and when I say children, I mean 5 year olds -- are registered as board members and the money is split between them using up their "tax free" allowances too. Seeing real tax burdens on Capital Gains of 7% and less is standard if all the tricks in the figures are applied properly. I highly doubt Sunak paid the full 20% on his 3.8million in Capital gains, just as Zahawi tried to dodge it completely last year.

Read The secret life of real estate and banking by Phil Anderson, The power in the land by Fred Harrison, or the recent Secret Wealth Advantage by Akhil Patel. These reforms have been known about for over a hundred years and are wilfully ignored because the land owners hold the power.
@joewilliams865811 ай бұрын
@@davidbates3057 You correctly identify a problem - unjust wealth/tax inequality - but then seek to solve it with a hammer - a massive increase in capital gains tax. Both the ultra-wealthy and retail investor (read the everyman who owns capital) would be effected by such a policy. That is to say, the ultra-wealthy who might spend capital gains income on a new ferrari (unjust) and the middle-class couple saving for retirement with an investment portfolio more diverse than their pension scheme (reasonable and takes pressure of the state). Any tax reform should take into account all people in society not just the ultra-rich.

The lack of analysis in the tax segment or questioning from the other panelist’s says a lot about how little tax actually interests people beyond slogans like tax the rich. If you want to go down the "who built the pyramids and when" rabbit hole, consider that 18,000 years ago was when the ice age had a grip on the planet. The Egyptian desert was not. Weirdly, when Europe was frozen, north Africa was in fact less hot than it is today. The area was quite fertile and the Nile not the only source of water. Actually the pyramids are not that far away from the current position of the Nile, so imagine how close it might have been 18,000 years ago. I'm saying that rafts (large ones presumably) were a likely way to move the stones around. That and the abundance of slaves, presumably more than happy to work on these prestige projects.

Sunak was big on the "More maths in schools". Well, here's a maths puzzle for him (rounding and averaging to make it easier): If you have 25,000 schools and each one has an average building life of 50 years, on average, how many will you have to rebuild every year?

In my opinion one of the stand out features of the US system of government is the fact that cabinet members are from outside the political system. This makes much more sense in ensuring those at the top table are the best people for the given roll, and can offer both expertise and independence from party tribalism. In comparison, you have someone like Gillian Keegan who is clearly being managed by civil servants and outside consultants meaning when ceilings fall she has neither the ability to step up and take control or the whit to accept responsibility as she is no more than a public mascot for her newly refurbished offices !!

Giant ideas though. Capital gains should 100% be taxed at the same rate as labour. Honestly though- at the risk of sounding like Olly getting the horn for Charlotte Owen, you’ll wipe 30% off the FTSE in one day if you make it happen. There are pros to this- renationalising water just got 30% cheaper, but there are cons, too. Either you make this international or you have to find a solution to a truly Trussian catastrofuck in The City. I’m not saying no. I’m saying I want to hear more.

I think the sloping Kings Chamber is an artifact left over from the construction of the pyramids rather than a feature in its own right. I think it was a ramp / channel for sliding weights to enable the hoisting up of heavier blocks - let me explain: If smaller bolcks are pulled up a ramp individually and then fastened together at the top, they can be released together, and that combined weight used, via ropes and pulleys, to raise heavier blocks than could otherwise be lifted on their own in one go. I bet hancock

How would changes to council tax impact the spending power of local authorities? If people in Burnley are paying less, will this negatively impact the finances of the local governments there, which need even more investment than London councils for example
@alpeshr8211 ай бұрын
I'm sick and tired of the likes Ava Santina Evans calling out Kier Starmer for being boring. I would rather have a boring PM who went about their job diligently and efficiently instead of the shit show we have had for the past number of years. Whatever happened to policies not personalities? In fact, had we taken this approach in 2015 and elected Labour we would have avoided Brexit and the preceding shit shower. So what it boils down to for me is is if Ava is more interested in personalities she should do one and become an entertainment journalist, and let someone with a whole brain be a contributor on this channel
@LimeyRedneck11 ай бұрын
Ava is a capital 'J' Journalist!.. Usually attacking personalities would be beside the point and focussing on policies would be time better spent. However New Nu-Labour don't have any that are distinguishable from the Tories. So there's that 🤠💜
@alpeshr8211 ай бұрын
@@LimeyRedneck the policies are being spoken in broad terms by Labour because they’re letting Tories commit political suicide by allowing them to cater to niche Tory ideals. Similar to what Johnson did to Corbyn. Also there is a fear that the Tories will just knick Labour policies while in Government.

Lots of people think he is boring though so why can't it be said? It's not like they have an abundance of policies for us to discuss instead.
@alpeshr8211 ай бұрын
@@belindathorne9784 because if that is the focus, then the attention is on the personality not on the policy and has ruined this country ever since the Tories have been in power. And its the job of journalists to challenge Labour MP on the lack of policies or overlap of policies.
@Notalloldpeople11 ай бұрын
@@LimeyRedneckbut that’s just not true is it. Labours policies that are in the public domain do differ significantly from the tories and as more are made public closer to the election, more differences will emerge. Despite what the media portrays, for example, the Labour parties attitude to immigration is different. As it is with climate change, NHS, HoL reform, devolution of power, etc
