I was starting to think Eva had gone on a complete tangent for a second, but she is completely right in that there should be a recentralisation of social services and their funding. Anything that can be consistently applied across the country should be centrally managed and it would allow for better allocation of budgets and resources.
@Smittumi
@Smittumi 4 ай бұрын
I dunno about centralising it in a traditional sense. But use of new technology like AI might be able to help with planning and spending across the system. Just as big corps like Walmart do (but for social benefit, not profit, obvs).
@EamonCoyle
@EamonCoyle 4 ай бұрын
@@Smittumi I know where you are coming from, in areas like managing roadworks and route planning for rubbish collection etc it would be handy. I think centralisation more in terms of having the budgets centralised for things like social care so that more affluent areas where they garner more income from council tax etc would level out for areas where the council tax income is less. The reason for taxation in the first place was for everyone to share the burden and the amount of income disparity across council areas is part of the reason for some councils struggling more than others.

Indeed. The current system essentially turns these services into a postcode lottery. @Smittumi - Agree that government is a bit cumbersome but AI as an answer to everything is becoming a bit frustrating. Doesn't matter what the question is; AI seems to be the answer. It's like AI means we don't have to think about any actual solutions that can be implemented right now.

I totally agree that funding for council services should (and to some extent is - although the amount has been steadily been reduced) come from central government. Otherwise, poorer areas, where more people are getting assistance for council tax, will get steadily poorer as their council tax intake is smaller than wealthier areas.

I'm a councillor in a unitary authority in Scotland and only about 1/6th of our funding comes from council tax. The vast majority comes from the government (Scottish in this case but they in turn are getting it from Westminster) and I'm a bit depressed that Ava seems woefully ignorant of how local government finance works. And while I'm at it suddenly announcing more money "for potholes" is one of the reasons we're in this mess with roads. We then need to either purchase the gear to let us fill roads and also (and this is the hardest part it turns out) recruit people who know how to use it. Or we contract it out and discover that there's not enough companies who are willing to do that because this stop/start funding means there's been no money for the previous few years so the companies no longer exist in sufficient numbers.

24:10 the point Ava made there is one that i have always wondered myself. The idea that social care budget comes from council taxes is just mad to me. Imagine the councils with more elderly people, a significant amount of their budget will go on to social care. Similar for urban areas with a lot of young people having children, a lot of the council's budget will go on to child care etc etc. it seems to me that with the government stats, those budget should come from the central government.

Really difficult watch this week as Ollie was acting like a real prick to Ava, doing a bad mix of interrupting and then mansplaining back to her what he didn’t allow her to finish. Her point about council tax is really important- councils made up of very wealthy citizens will require less services and therefore be taxed less (see Chelsea and Westminster) whereas struggling regions have too many needs that council tax would be unaffordable to many in those regions.

Yes, it would be interesting if in the leaving speech he actually leaves with respect for the result and with any dignity. Meanwhile I hope they have live tv leaders debates again, I think Sunak's inability to remain calm when criticised for any policy, won't win him over!

Totally agree with the central funding for social care...I thought that was what the Social Care Levy was for? But then Council Tax increases still happen and it is still not enough to cover services. The council tax system needs a total overhaul as the valuation system based on 1991 housing valuations is totally out of whack with bands for houses and wealthy areas can get away with paying less.

@35:05 I think the story Ava is referring to is when Suella Braverman took a massive RAF transporter plane to Manston Airport, situated next door to the Manston Immigration Centre, near Ramsgate in Kent. It's the same airport that was used to store lorries when Brexit first happened, and Operation Brock on the M20 had too many lorries parked up. The airport is unused for commercial flights and has been for years, but it is still by technicality an active airfield for vanity flights by ministers looking to score political points.
