So he made a very good point about lack of investment since 1990. The obvious correlation is privatisation and neo liberalism. Unfortunately the Labour Party is still wedded to it and neo liberalisation.
@RobinHarris-nf4yv14 күн бұрын
No it isn’t. You are over simplifying politics Labour Party is not wedded to privatisation, it’s going to renationalise railway operators, strengthen water regulation to stop shareholders making profit out of water and they want to start state owned British energy. And Wes Streeting has been talking about making primary care, ie Doctors Surgeries fully part of NHS
@kevinmorrison515614 күн бұрын
@@RobinHarris-nf4yv Unfortunately the devil is in the detail. We will see about the railways as there is history on this when they promised it running up to 1997 then ditched it. However, bringing the tocs in house is only dealing with a third of the problem, nothing about Network Rail or the ROSCOs. As for NHS Streeting has repeatedly stated about using the private sector. And if they were serious about water and energy they would properly nationalise them and not try to dress it up.
@robertmartin68007 күн бұрын

Agree with almost everything said, apart from the 2 child benefit cap comments. Although I dont deny I am sure there are families with 3+ children in poverty, the question should be why are families having children multiples of children if they cant even afford a coat for the ones they already have. I mean, you have families taking home £60k a year who want 3 kids but cant afford it so sticking to 1 or 2, and families not working with 5+ kids. This is wrong and unfair and something should be done to limit this - nobody who cant afford 4 kids needs a 5th and if you cant afford 4 kids you shouldnt be able to pay for them by having a 5th.

Can't believe Torsten is in his 40s (according to a quick google search)?!!??!?

Nice to listen to someone actually wanting to talk about the economy and the way the lack of investment and short termist thinking has led to where we are at, fixing this is for me more key than any social or cultural issues that the majority of politicians want to discuss.

I enjoyed this video very much. Mr. Bell knows his subjects and was able to clearly communicate his knowledge to an audience. I hope he wins. The interviewer for the program was excellent. He asked solid questions and responded well to Mr. Bell's analysis. I upvoted this video. I will now go and watch "Tory claims of Labour tax hike debunked, and Vaughan Gething's no confidence vote" from the channel. I will likely not make it through that video as the same interviewer will be all over the place in the discussion with his smart colleagues. Hope Labour wins this election.

I'm pleased that an experienced and knowledgeable candidate, who is honest about the facts and is led by the evidence, is standing for parliament. I hope he is elected and has an impact.

Really glad Torsten is standing, and I wish him all the best. However, it was a bitter pill near the end where he was saying that you should judge the team and what the Leader/MP is telling you about themselves, considering those currently at the top of the Labour Party... Because that's very much been the problem many of us are having with them right now, and it certainly goes beyond mere compromises for the sake of addressing what matters.

This is the kind of person we actually need in politics - professional with actual knowledge of economics and the causes of poverty. On the other side there seem to be many people in politics who come from the legal world (where any truth is debatable and is open to be re-defined) or career politicians with no actual work experience or connection with the majority of the population. An unfortunate truth is that politics is easier for the rich to get into than the poor meaning that as far as representing the large amount of people on lower wages is concerned, the majority of politicians have no clue what their lives are like.

This video just cost me £15ish quid. It will be awesome if Torsten Bell wins his seat. I can easily see him doing great things in as a minister for something. Wouldn't it be great to see him on Question Time.

When it comes to why we didn't invest is because we built ourselves over the last 30 years over cooperation with the continent. We didnt need more energy because France had it covered, we didnt need to build our manufacturing sector because we worked seamlessly with companies on the continent and many other things. I dont give the government much slack but Brexit was never in the long term plans and now it's hurting us.

A lot of people who are on low wages, often first generation immigrants live in many of the impoverished areas in London. These are the ghettos shes referring to that are generally separated ethnically with higher portions of Middle eastern and Asian people living there. Its understandable why ethnic groups live near one another because there is a sense of belonging and safety.

I've taught in several schools in areas of poverty and high deprivation. You get kids without proper clothes and skipping meals... Yet they all have smartphones and nice trainers Someone knowledgeable needs to explain this to me. Not saying that we shouldn't also do all he says, but I think we also need better budgeting education.

He points out nothing been invested in energy or water since the 90s the assets have been sweated, yet forgets to mention this was when they were PRIVATISED, so maybe privatisation is a bad plan for vital infrastructure that forms natural monopolies.

I hate that it's refreshing that a (now-)politician actually answers questions fairly, succinctly & honestly, with a positive & warm attitude. This should be commonplace, where real good people want to make a difference, but it doesn't seem that way at all.
