Last week I took a 6pm train from London to Leeds and LNER charged £72 for a single ticket! Since when it is okay?! Just checking now: a single ticket from London to Glasgow costs £114 for a Thursday 10:30am train and £130 for a 3:30pm train. Single! For each passenger! Not even a return ticket!

I think NIMBYs are given a bad time when they actually are pretty reasonable people. Imagine you've spent decades saving for a house and it becomes you most valuable asset then someone threatens to hugely devalue it. It's pretty reasonable to refuse that. It's essentially asking local people to pay for government projects. The problem here isn't the people who own houses, but that housing is treated as an investment. People shouldn't be forced to tie a huge portion of their personal wealth up in a random building.

I think the Greens (including Adrian Ramsay) could actually be quite pleased with the NIMBYism ban, because their MPs and councillors can now just shrug at local planning if there's nothing they can do about it. Previously they've had a huge conflict of interest because every MP has massive local pressure to oppose infrastructure like wind farms, but now they can more cleanly focus their campaigning on environmental policies.

Re: putting the electricity transmission cables underground, Ava said something like "in principle, sure" but it's worse than that. Long distance electrical transmission is more efficient at extremely high voltages which requires it to be up in the air for safety and efficiency. If the wires were buried they would have to be at a lower voltage. This would lead to more energy being lost to the wires themselves, and the fact that they're buried would mean a lot of energy would be nicked by the earth. There's a good reason pylons are Like That.

There's a major issue with nationalising the railways: when prices go up (which they inevitably will) you can vote out the people who did it... Private companies waiting in the wings to take over the rail we just paid to repair... aaaasnd the cycle continues... The wheels on the train go round and round...
@chrism3701
@chrism3701 Ай бұрын
Taxpayer subsidies to the rail sector have reached astronomical levels. At £6 billion per year (including Crossrail), they have roughly trebled in real terms over the last twenty years. But the high rate of subsidy has not led to a reduction in fares, which recently have risen above the official rate of inflation. Where do you think all that money has gone to ? the shareholders of course. Good old privatisation for you.
@fergusdenoon1255
@fergusdenoon1255 Ай бұрын
@@chrism3701 how long has it taken to get to this point? The point is that the nameless faces of the shareholders don't get voted out, they just invest in something else, they've never been held accountable, they actually need the sector to be nationalised so they can justify their price hikes when it's privatised again. The government actually get held accountable, they WILL get voted out for merely doing exactly the same as the private company, in fact they'll get voted out for doing less damage than a company, because the electorate can actually do that, and they will actually do that. It's called "a long con"
@fergusdenoon1255
@fergusdenoon1255 Ай бұрын
@@chrism3701 non of that matters. The issue is there's no accountability for shareholders. We, the electorate can't do anything about their greed. Prices have to go up, and this is the thing we don't like, when a government is in charge and they put the prices up, because they have to, we, the electorate can easily do something about it, we vote them out. Then it gets privatised, costs are cut at the expense of service and infrastructure and...we must nationalise it. Honestly, nationalisation is not the answer, it's actually part of the problem.
