Used to play in that graveyard over 50 yrs ago. Grandparents lived top of manse Brad and parents lived opposite then when I was born and bit older at bottom of kilmailing road. Happy memories. Loved the Queen of Scots video, Court Knowe and Cathcart Castle were old haunts. Left Glasgow in 80s so great to see this these, thank you so much!👏

"Resurgam" on the graveseone at the end = "I willl re-emerge". The moss and the stone tell us that we're still waiting. This is such a good series, I'm learning about the place I've lived in for seventy years!

I am a Cathcart from Charleston, South Carolina USA. I enjoyed your tour. As an old man, I find old grave yards fascinating. All though, I do side-step the shadows and keep a weather eye out for the shades.

Loved the jumping the wall! And really cool seeing the merged photo of the church in its prime, and it’s now ruined condition. I haven’t spent any time in Cathcart, so will need to have a wander!

I grew up in Fairfax Ave and went to St Fillans Primary in Crompton Ave. Our playground looked onto the Old Cathcart Church. I remember telling my friends ghost stories about the tower. I don't know if someone told them to me or I was just making it up, it was 50 years ago lol. Very interesting to see the old stomping ground again. Not that I've gone very far, just to Battlefield.

Very good , I have passed old Cathcart a million times and never gave it a thought…..just as a side note the covanters formed the the Cameronians SR Regiment a famous Scottish regiment who’s museum is in Hamilton.

Thankyou very informative im just up the road and always wondered about that church as there was one across the road? Adams and greek thomson structures just down the road, superb. As im led to believe there was a covenantera reading in the old St Mary church in Rutherglen Main st. Its mental the things that happen because of religion.

Oh the things I don't know about my own city. Should be part of the Glasgow City Schools curriculum, if it hasn't been added already. Never knew of 3 Old Cathcart Churches. Was one of them hit by fire, about late 1980s early 1990s ?

The cafe on Garry Street closed down recently! The same family had the Royal Cafe in Cathcart Road, near Aitkenhead Road corner, which closed when Govanhill was destroyed by Glasgow Corporation in the 70's.

Well done for watching right to the end. I think Sams cafe on Garry street has been shut for 4 or 5 years now, I mentioned it in the hope of triggering some local nostalgia about the area.

Given that this is a sub-circular graveyard, similar to Govan Old, it is possible that the churchyard is much older, and may date to the 6th Century, as it is reported to be dedicated to St Oswald.

Absolitely possible. I believe that an archaeological survey a few years ago found there to be 6 levels of burials in places.

How was life working there? I remember the tragic story of the owners who went on holiday and never came back.

@@moeszyslak7304 The Haldane's were a wonderful family to work for. I started in the workshop and worked my way up to transport manager which then allowed me in later life to have a wonderful career and eventually my own businesses. It was tragic what happened to David, Moira and a family friend and took its toll on the wider family, but I will always be thankful for the opportunities they gave me. Thanks for remembering them!

Not this one. It gets confusing again that this is Cathcart Old parish cemetery and Stan Laurel's mum is buiried in Cathcart cemetery.

I lived in the older tenement top flat in Kilmailing Road which overlooked the graveyard from 1976-86 & spent many a sunny afternoon in the graveyard. There are no bodies buried at the Martyr's Stone.

I grew up on Holmlea Rd until I was 13 happy days. Cathcart Cemetary on Brenfield Rd is interesting. I loved the Couper Inst especially the Library where I spent many happy hours.

Loved this one - I can remember discovering the longsword gravestone when we were having a slightly drunken wander around there one summer in the early 2000s. We decided it was the resting place of a Templar Knight, which I know sounds ridiculous, hahaha. It was probably just some dude who liked swords ;-)

I stayed in the Southside of Glasgow for 18 years and drove all over this area. Thought I had a good knowledge of the place, but this video has taken it to a whole different level. Well done.

She is buried in Cathcart cemetery. Very confusing, but thats a different graveyard.

I lived near there for years and knew none of that. Fascinating Have you done anything on the Aikenhead Estate? Did Mac Mick buy it for all their housebuilding in the area? They seem still to have land there. The house itself in the park was always boarded up when I grew up there

The house is now converted into about 12 flats and having delivered the mail I can confirm that the common area that would have been the hall of the house is decorated similar to how it would have looked when it was one house. I need to look into the history some more of the house but I did put this picture together a few years ago; flic.kr/p/e33WBN

We used to play in Aikenhead House in the early 80's when it was a dilapidated ruin. Great to see it now re establisbed as flats.

I went to KP secondary just up the road and in younger days played all around the area. I didn't know the history like this was a stone throw from my childhood home in kings park

@@AstonishingGlasgow yip the treck up and down the hill in winter, then to go up to Mrs Jacks math class and be frozen.. And memories of skipping school going into the Lynn petting zoo which is no longer there or the rememants of cart castle before they took the whole load down .the good old days. Loving the videos and the history

The keys are held by the current Old parish church over the road. I dont have a phone number but it may be available online. If you have no luck, contact me through my Astonishing Glasgow facebook with dates and I will try and drop into the church and find out the arrangements. A lot of old gravestones have skulls, bones and skeletons on them. I think it is just a symbol from a time of illiteracy to show that its a grave.

I have a question... as a child, when at my granparents house in Cathcart, I used to walk to a very small cemetery that was basically an entry way in wall toward a church that was lined on both sides with lots those large iron caged crypts. Ive seen it online decades ago exactly as in my memory but cant find the website now. So, Im wondering if this is perhaps another entrance to this cemetery or another altogether. Does anyone know... or names of others I can look up...

I have been wracking my brain since yesterday incase I am forgetting about somewhere else in Cathcart but I think the Old parish church is the only graveyard in Cathcart that matches your description and you will have seen this in the video. What you see in the video is the full extent of the graveyard, its not very big. The iron cage crypts are known at mort safes and were usually built to prevent body snatchers. I will keep thinking this over incase I can think of another graveyard nearby that matches your memory.

I used to work in that graveyard when I worked with the Parks Department many moons ago and im sure you could enter from the back at the part of Kilmailing Road which is now fenced off. There is still a little stone sentry box there,maybe to stop the grave robbers entering back in the day? Perhaps this is the way you entered the
