Richard Burton was also dying when he played O'Brian in "1984" and used it to his advantage. I don't know what my own mindset would be if I were dying of something horrible but big respect to people who manage to use it as an advantage to their craft... rather than just getting all miserable about it, I mean I can barely cope if I so much as stub my toe in the morning!

Julian Beck's "Reverend Kane" gives more horror and menace than a whole army of CGI-created zombies. A backstory on the Reverend Kane character would make a great "prequel" to the Poltergeist movies. He's a sort of combination of a Reverend Jim Jones (of the Peoples Temple) and Freddy Krueger.

I actually think the only flaws the sequel has: 1. Not even bothering to mention Dana, the older sister! Originally, the script was going to mention her & say that she was away at college and too scared to return home. WHY did they not film that, I wonder?? 2. The editing is a little choppy, they leave out why Tangina says "I don't really trust my instincts anymore." & other background on Taylor & Kane's spiritual background. But even so......this film still gets a 9.8/10 from me! It is fantastic!

This is a very terrifying yet inspirational scene. On screen it’s terrifying, behind the camera inspirational because Julian Beck (the preacher Kane) had been diagnosed with stomach cancer three years prior (1983), in the scene you can see how he’s using his ailment and putting it to work for him as he presents himself to the family as a mortal Man, but you can see the corruption exuding from him. I wouldn’t know if we should define this as character acting, method acting or both. But I think it’s inspiring that an actor in his position was able to give such an iconic scene that holds up decades later.

As many commentors have noted, this is one of the best and most frightening monologues in a horror movie. Delivered by the late, great Julian Beck in one of his best all time performances. The end of the monologue where his face changes from rage back to calm is acting genius. A fantastic and an underrated villain....a villain who one of the scariest of the 80s. RIP Julian Beck.

Poltergeist 2 was an ok movie overall, but Julian Beck’s performance made it great in the parts he was in. I read there was a scene filmed between Beck and Rubinstein, but it was cut out of the final movie. I’d like to see it.

To see how fast his cancer ravaged his body, Julian Beck was in The Cotton Club in 1984 and he filmed this only a year later. If you see him onscreen in the Cotton Club and then this, it doesn't even look like the same person. But still, even with his health being as bad as it was, Beck put in a masterful performance in this film that doesn't get enough credit. Reverend Kane should be listed along with Darth Vader as one of the best movie villains of the 1980's.

This is surely the best scene in the film. It towers over it the way the "mystery man" scene towers over Lost Highway. It's a huge shame that Beck died midway through filming.

When you see a master performer, you know it. You can see a lot of cool Tarintino flicks and a lot of fun Deadpool movies, or a fun Pineapple Express or Curb wackiness. But when you see a performer who has had years to refine, and then a story is built and dialogue is perfect for the part, it's really a sight to see.
