Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course is an introduction to polymer science and provides a broad overview over various aspects of polymers, from synthetic methods, via polymer physics and materials properties to processing into products. The overarching aim of the course is to connect molecular properties and chain architecutres of polymers with resulting macroscopic properties.
This chapter gives a broad and general introduction about the contents of the course, a historical perspective on polymer science, classification of polymers, as well as an introduction to molecular weight distributions.

Thank you for posting these lectures. I feel like I should have stayed in Germany thirty-two years ago, and attended Uni. 👍👍

I am starting at Zero, working on a theoretical polymerization idea, that may Not be possible, but if i can develop would be useful ($$$). Your lectures are helping me develop and define my thinking. Thank You SIR. 🙂

Have you thought of doing a course on plastics for industrial use? Like what plastic and why for a given product (computer mouse, jewelry, bottle, watch, mold for casting, mp3 player, pen, phone case, packaging, etc.?) I think this would be of interest to many people on KZfaq, because lots of people are getting into this sort of thing. Also, you might want to frame it in terms of the plastics you can use with a PLA 3d printer, and with a resin printer.

Thank you for the lecture, wonderful. Hate to be this guy but for the number average example. 20/3 would come out to 6.66 repeating not 6.9.

Good job Nic. Explanation is pretty good. However, one suggestion! It will be easy for the viewers to be focused on the short videos (30-40 min.). My own observation :)

thanks! fully agree that shorter is often better. However, the course was based on my actual lecture, which are typically 90min in Germany.

Just an observation, in your "what are polymers?" slide, the ethylene molecule is wrong, should be CH2=CH2, instead of CH3=CH3
