Video #373: After spending so much time creating your cane design and then reducing it down to a workable size, the last thing you want is for the slices to get all wonky and distorted.
* To avoid distorting your polymer clay canes when slicing them, try the following simple tips.
* Use a sharp thin blade.
* Make a scrap clay cradle with raw light colored clay.
* Use water to keep the cane from sticking to the scrap clay cradle.
* Pull or slide blade through clay and raw clay cradle, rather than pushing down with your blade

Since seeing your tip on preventing distortion of round canes I have started using a scrap clay cradle on virtually all canes. Triangle canes can be as difficult to maintain shape as the round ones. I have found that a cradle is very helpful Thin slicing with my Lucy slicer. Thank you so much for such a useful tip.

Oh I've heard of putting clay canes in a bowl of icy water or placing them in the freezer for about 5 to 10 mins to make it easier to cut without smushing them. I think i want to try the freezer option i don't plan on making large canes though :) I so far want to create tiny eyeballs for doll making i was thinking of making eyerise canes then cutting them and placing them on raw white polymer clay balls that way i save white clay and i already have my eye color canes :3

Hi bburg0408, cane building is pretty tricky to explain in 500 characters or less. Having success with polymer clay canes depends on so many factors, such as clay consistency, the way the design is created and the manner the background was packed. Although I can't really help you with this here, learning about caning would help. I have several cane tutorials on my blog (link in description) that would get you started in the right direction. Good luck!
