Video #751: This video will give you a glimpse into what I do behind the scenes with our Studio Cam videos... PcT Studio Tips, Polymer Clay Tutor, Cindy Lietz, Doug Lietz.. More Info: www.beadsandbeading.com/blog/?... Polymer Clay Tutor.
This Studio Cam video is raw, unpolished and a little rant-y... but I think you're going to love it!
In it I discuss the most common polymer clay baking question I get over and over again.
"But Cindy you're wrong... the packaging says to bake for only 10 minutes! If I bake an hour my clay will burn!"
The video goes into the frustrating world of baking polymer clay... and it addresses all of the misinformation that is out there.
On the packaging labels, the manufacturers let you know what the correct baking temperature should be... but the suggested baking time they recommend, is not really helpful at all. It means that there is either a whole lot of polymer clay that is either breaking (under baked) or burning (over baked).
This confusion happens for two reasons... one, there just isn't enough room on those tiny little packages to put very much information about the proper way to bake your polymer clay pieces. And two, the companies want to avoid complaints, so they do the safest thing... recommending short baking times to avoid burning the clay.
In this video I explain why polymer clay needs to bake at the right temperature, for the right amount of time, in order to "melt" the plastic particles in the clay to properly cure your pieces all the way through.
The issue is that most oven thermostats are not accurate... which means that you are often not baking at the right temperature.
The short answer to this problem is actually simple... use an oven thermometer... and bake longer.

Some great honesty in this video, for someone who makes their living from this clay to criticize the Clay companies is really very brave and incredibly honest, she doesnt have to do this, it is incredibly helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us, ignore the moaners, having pieces break is all part of learning the craft lol

Hey Ron, Thank you so much for saying that! I appreciate your kind words more than you know. I do my very best to be as honest as possible, because I feel it ultimately brings the highest value to people who love this medium as much as I do. Perhaps I could have been more concise in this particular video as I am in most of my videos, and it would have appeased the moaners a little more, but it is what it is... After 13 years teaching polymer clay professionally I still am answering the same questions about breaking polymer clay and how to choose the right brands and bake it properly so that the user has the best learning experience possible. I honestly wish the manufacturers would do a better job of either removing or fixing low quality clays and giving customers better instructions so I could move on to more exciting ideas, but perhaps I would be working myself out of a job! LOL 😀

@@PolymerClayTutor I agree!! They should at least have a disclaimer on package that states “Baking times are suggested guidelines. For best results, visit our web site for more thorough guidelines.” In this day and age, most everyone has access to internet and at least they would know that if they didn’t do additional research, they kind of have to expect subpar results!

Yes, Ron, very well said!!....Don’t even get me started on how rude and entitled people appear to be when they get whiney and start complaining about the ABUNDANCE of FREE advice and tutoring that an expert KZfaq artist and teacher is generous enough to give to them as complete strangers just because they didn’t get their desired result. As if they shouldn’t have to deal with any kind of learning curve! Ugh! What a turn-off.

First time ever using polymer clay and I followed your advice and baked mine longer. I baked a trial piece first and my son, who is 6'6" could not break it! It bent a little but Went back into shape. My candy canes turned out perfect! The white was still white and no fears of them breaking! So happy!

I loved this incredibly down-to-earth video, and your explanations completely make sense. It is frustrating trying to manage so many variables when just figuring out a craft in the very beginning, so I appreciate your very simple, straight-forward message-get an oven thermometer, and use it! And check it often!!! Also, be patient while you learn, as there will be mistakes! I’ve started trying to embrace the mistakes and have discovered that I can make an interesting and unexpected piece of mixed media art using broken pieces of a clay project, so it’s not a complete loss. Thanks so much for your honesty and patience with us newbies! You are an amazing teacher!! :)

Contrary to some people's comments, I think this video has a good way of explaining it all. Cindy is clearly tired of all the repetitive questions and who can blame her? Even with all this explaining theres still people asking about temperature. Read your clay package!! it depends on what brand of clay you have, just bake for longer and watch for oven spikes. Although I have always baked much longer than recommended, it's still at the correct temperature and usually covered. I did like the way she explained it using the visualization of a pillar candle. There are still some experienced clay artists who don’t always tell you the correct information! When I start to teach, I would like my students to watch this video! It's useful for all beginners and those people complaining about burnt, or indeed, broken or cracked pieces...... So thank you Cindy! I personally think you did a great job! ❤

♥♥♥ Thank you so much Nicki for your kind words! I could have been a little kinder with my candor way back then when I did this video. The negative comments did sting, but there were enough people like you that saw past the "snark" and got some value out of the video. Over the years I have come to realize, with all the misinformation out there, people are bound to not trust some of the information they are hearing... even from those who have been in the biz awhile... there's a lot of stuff out there, that I don't trust either. I have also become more patient and understanding when it comes to baking questions. I have been answering the same questions for over 15 years... same answers too! LOL I've just gotten more gentle with the delivery! By the way I do a weekly LIVE Q&A Broadcast on Wednesdays at 12:00 Noon Pacific Time on Facebook if you want to pop in facebook.com/polymerclay We should be returning to KZfaq soon, but until then, you can see what we've been up to!

Hello, I know this is an older video but with all the testing you have done with baking, I wonder if you might have the answer to a question I am having a hard time finding any info on? I do small, super detailed sculptures with Premo clay and I have been finding it is easier to do 2-3 bakes to lock in parts as I go. I know you can rebake sculpey, but I was wondering if you can do 10 minute cures (just enough to harden that outer layer) or if it is best to do the full cure for each fresh part each time it is baked? I've seen some people mention that doing short partial cures can lead to the clay being weaker in the long run even if you will ultimately end up baking the full time needed, but it always seems like they are going by third person accounts rather than any actual experience. The reason I would prefer to go with shorter partial cures if it doesn’t effect strength is I find even with proper tenting and insulation with tile in my pans that I tend to get slightly darker colors (especially on lighter clay colors) on the parts that have gotten 2-3x the baking times of the pieces in comparison to the pieces that are added in for the final bake. Thank you in advance if you can offer any advice.

Another question. Sometime when I am covering my 10oz. glass bowls I will put on several pieces of my pattern, bake for about 5-10 minutes, let cool, apply the next few pieces, bake 5-10 minutes, etc. until the entire bowl is covered, then bake the whole thing for 40 minutes. I do it so I have a hard edge to to butt the new pattern pieces up against. Is this a sound practice?

Hi, Thanks for this, I bake alot of things in aluminum baking pans filled with baking soda. I do this because the delicate shaping needs support so I pack the soda and fill around and overtop of the form to see if I can keep everything from flopping over. Then I put a matching aluminum pan for a lid My question is do you have any experience with this & do you think I might need to adjust the temp (I use kato and souffle the most- will soon start using premo) I usually bake longer than recommended because I learned that its the temp that counts. I do use an oven thermometer but I still want to be sure things last but don't' get floppy thanks

Hey Cindy! Thanks for the tips, I`m wondering if you have any tips, or if the baking should be different for different brands of polymer clay? I`m struggling still with pieces not baking properly/snapping when done - I`m using Fimo soft, I got a thermostat and bake on 110 degrees Celsius, for 1h but still they snap super easily (piece thickness 2mm) :( Also, do you let your pieces cool down whilst on the baking tile or do you move them from the tile to a cooler surface to cool down more quickly? Thank you, Lisa :)

Hi Cindy, not sure if this is the right place to ask, and I have been unable to find any videos on it. You did mention in a much earlier video something about a bead you made using a die cut. I recently purchased a big shot plus and do have a few steel rule dies. Is it possible to die cut polymer clay and then use the liquid clay to adhere the die cut piece to a bigger flat piece of clay? Also is it possible to adhere die cut cardstock, aluminum foil or wrapping paper to baked polymer clay, or would it still leach out any moisture even though the clay has been baked. Thank you so much.

Hi Mam, thanks for all your videos. You explain everything very nicely!! Recently i have changed my oven. But its not conviction oven. Its an OTG. I am using bake mode. Preheating it for 15-20 min till it reached 275F with ceramic tile as base in my tray. After that i place my little charms in it made of premo for 15 min and later 10 min 15min. So total 30min. But since i have started using this new oven i am seeing hair line cracks in them. I am just feeling helpless. Please help me.. what the issue could be? ☹️ Also i had conditioned the clay very well.

thanks so much for your videos. Been baking all my pieces for a solid hour and love the results! I did have a question. I saw a video where someone set (pressed down) a cabochon into polymer clay on a ceramic tile, cut around it and removed excess clay, beautifully decorated it with more polymer, painted with mica, etc. But, they didn't show removing the piece FROM the tile before baking. I don't know if that was edited out of their video or removing wasn't necessary. DOES it have to be lifted off the tile before baking or will it release from the tile when it hardens during the baking process? Sorry if you've answered this somewhere else. I appreciate you!

Hi I love your videos they are so informative I just have to subscribe. I have a problem: My oven's lowest temperature in the dial is 100 degrees Celsius. BUT when I use thermometers, it's actually 140 - 150. How do I go around this when the clays I use are supposed to be baked within 125-135 degrees? I am still starting and I can't really afford to buy a new convection oven :( Also, do I actually cover the figure with an aluiminum bowl or will a roof (open in the sides) do just so I can avoid direct contact to heat? THank you.

Thank you for posting these videos. I know that they will be extremely helpful. I use a toaster oven which doesn't take long to reach the temp and has circulating heat and I put my clay works in a small bowl with baking soda in it to help cushion the clay and have no problems with burning my work. I also bake at 25 degrees lower temp than the manufacturer says for a longer time. The Clay I mostly use is ProSculpt which is ideal for making dolls. I love this clay because it is very durable when baked at a little lower temp for double the time. Peggy

Hi! Love your channel! Im new with polymer clay, im learning to do mushrooms, And I saw few videos they bake separately and then glue. My question, I confused with, if I need to bake separately 2 pieces and then glue or I should put together raw and then bake? Or if you baked one piece and need to add additional raw piece to that one, you added and put again in the oven with the one was already baked? 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️. Thanks

Thank you for the kind comments! All of the suggestions you made will work. Rather than glue, I would use a liquid clay like Sculpey Bake & Bond, or any of the other liquid clays. The liquid clay needs to be baked to cure. If it were me, I would probably bake the stem first for about 20 mins... add the liquid clay and set the top on the stem... then bake for an hour. Make sure to watch all my baking videos, like the one with the foil pan lid, and the bake longer one, so that you bake your piece properly and you don't end up scorching it. Have fun and good luck!

You said you bake your pieces sometimes for an hour, even the thin small pieces. I baked mine for an hour and a half (by accident lol) and when it cooled it was still bendy and flexible. I put it back in a few times and it never did get very hard. It was a thin, flat maybe 4 centimeter thick piece. Premo sculpey. I got a thermometer like you suggested. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? I mean I don't expect it to be like porcelain or glass but at least not bend when my fingers grab it. Any advice?

Hello, I just started using polymer at for the first time yesterday. I am using a mold that can actually be placed in the oven. The first one I did turned out great. It didn't break when I tried to bend it. The second one did break. I used the same mold, temp, time, and clay on the second one. I also let the oven preheat and get to a steady heat of 275 (I have a thermometer in the oven) nothing changed... now I did attempt to bend it only an hour after taking it out of the oven (it was already cool though). How long are you supposed to leave it alone after removing it from the oven? I am using Sculpey Premo brand. The instructions say 275 for 30 min per 1/2 inch or 15 min for 1/4. The item I'm making had about 3/8... so kind of in between. So I left it in for about 20 min. I also sat the mold on a piece of printer paper and a ceramic tile with a foil tent over it. What do you think is making it break upon bending?

Hello! I'm so happy these videos are available, they have been so so helpful. I have a question regarding a design I made for an earring. It involves several separate "noodle" shaped pieces of clay that are attached parallel/horizontally (hope that makes sense). Originally I drilled a hole through the noodles (post-baking) and attached with a metal wire, but the noodles break fairly easily after the hole is drilled since the circumference of the noodles is so small. I was wondering if you've had this issue and if you recommend gluing instead (or another method)? If so, what glue do you recommend? I'm using E6000 and the glue looks rather clunky :/ Thank you so much for your time!

Hi there! I love your videos. I’m having a few issues with “plaquing” in some of my clay. The white chunky speckles that appear beneath the surface. I’m not sure if it’s a baking issue or conditioning issue? I feel I condition the clay well. Could it possibly be humidity? Thanks so much
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Hi the plaquing happens in translucent clay usually because of air or moisture. Make sure to pull on your sheets of clay to remove air, and avoid moisture and humidity wherever possible. Also consider testing different brands to see which one works best for your environment.

Ok. So I'm now on my second B/D Digital Convection oven. The company replaced the first one that was at least 40 degrees off. The first never got to temp and this one takes about 30 minutes to get up to temp. Pretty discouraged. I know I'm new but could it be that the oven thermometers I'm buying are taking a long time to get up to temp? There's supposed to be a digital thermometer inside the oven that works, right? The other ones just take 30 minutes to work. I'm to the point that I will sacrifice my real oven which works great. Anyway, now it's been trying to get up to 275 for about 30 minutes and when setting the temp I'm now setting it at 320 to get 275. Which is ok if that's what I have to do I just love this clay. So I am wondering how the convection part changes things. Do you still use that? Or should I just go with the bake and not the convection? Arrrrggg

you are so right Cindy! people don't believe just how off their oven may actually be, and even oven thermometers so if you sell your stuff, put two in! I do always worry about undercooking, even after an hour I'm afraid my pieces may break later after sale. Is there any way to tell if a bead in particular is cured long enough as you can't really try to bend it etc. Maybe a way to tell when sanding?Also, I have also accidently left my faux gem beads I'm the oven... I fell asleep..yes. for 5 hours. hahahaah AND it was perfectly fine. so I guess then I know they must be done. ;) So everyone stop worrying she knows what she's talking about! If you burnt it, you cooked to hot not too long. No such thing as too long. Thanks Cindy!

I always cover my pieces with tinfoil for extra security so that it doesnt burn. I used to use a really old toaster oven without covering and it would always burn bc the temperature and the light is unsteady but covering it with tinfoil prevents it from burning. Love these vids btw!

Thank u soooooo much! The 1st time I ever saw polymer clay baked they were fried to a crisp so due to watching that experience with my friend's baking I have been super hesitant with my pieces that I have just barely baked for the 1st time and a few of mine were under baked and I've had quite a few things be brittle & have broken off. So this was very very helpful for me😆 and now I can let my friend know how to fix that problem now too. So thanks and great video!

THANK YOU Amanda for coming in a posting this kind comment! I am very pleased to hear that this information was helpful for you. Most people work with polymer clay for their enjoyment, so if the end result is burnt or broken, the enjoyment goes down dramatically! 😜 Glad these tips are helping you get good results so you can get back to enjoying the process of creating! 💖

I guess I read about the proper baking before I started working with polymer clay ! You are absolutely right ! The temperature is the key. All though if you bake it longer than the package says, at the right temperature, you'll get a good hard piece. I only burned something once ! when my husband changed the temperature of the oven to 400° and I didn't catch it ! Other than that I bake my pieces on 275° for approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the thickness of my piece.

Can anyone tell me the TEMPERATURE at which I should be baking polymer clay. I've heard all sorts of different temperatures but nothing consistent. I've watched a dozen videos on bake time with no mention of the temperature...
@elizabethfisher5825
@elizabethfisher5825 4 жыл бұрын
thanks for that video. I did buy an oven thermometer. And the first time I used it I had to increased the temp to 300 so that 275 registered on the thermometer. Now my question is do you start keeping time the moment you put your clay and turn the oven on. Or wait until the temp reaches 275 and start counting the one hour for baking, then I assume you leave the clay in until it cools, right?
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
If it is a thick piece that might take awhile for the inside to get hot, I would preheat the oven before you set the timer. If it is thin, I don't worry about it and set the timer right away. You don't have to wait for the oven to be cool before taking your piece out though. I haven't found it made any difference.

What is the best polymer clay table top oven to use to bake polymer clay in for an adult to use at a good price ?I have worked sculpted in polymer clay before . I want to start again and I don’t want to use the big gas oven . The stuff I want to make will be miniature so I don’t need a big oven . I’ve seen a review on the Amaco Polymer Clay Oven it is high price plus people didn’t think it was worth it was dependable . I enjoyed your video I always have back up for temp & timer . Thank you for sharing

Don't buy one of those "polymer clay ovens". They are just a cheap crappy toaster oven that isn't even suited for baking polymer clay because the opening is too shallow, they don't hold the temperature very evenly and they often don't even have timers that go for 1 hour. Just use the largest toaster oven or counter top oven that you can afford. I use a Kitchenaid Countertop Convection Oven that has worked beautifully for me for quite a few years now. (I have a review on KZfaq). Here is a link to the one I use if you're interested in checking it out. amzn.to/2Ngbbnn (Amazon Affiliate Link)

Thank you! I like to use convection oven (fan) with heat coming from both the top and the bottom if possible. This makes for a more even heat. Don't forget to use an oven thermometer. Most oven dials are incorrect.

Not to bore you with the same question again but.... I understand the process and the instructions you give but I still have some questions. 1. Does the thickness matter? If thicker, say sculptures not jewelry do you bake longer? 2. When you have thinner and thicker pieces together do you use the same principle and bake for an hour? 3. When baking in stages would you do an hour each time or shorten the time in between bakes until the final bake for an hour? I hope repeating the same old baking question doesn't bother you too much 😄!!

First time using this type of clay. Made a flower, about 6" long, and a butterfly. Flower, petals and all, came out beautifully. A wing, however, fell off the butterfly. What's the best way to fix it? The butterfly is about 2" x 2", wings are about 2 mm thick. Baked for an hour at 300. Since it's a polymer I thought of using rubber cement glue, hot glue, or crazy glue. Just need it to hold long enough to paint. Acrylic paint can give it a weak bond.

Thank you so much One question Is the same time for one piece or three piece? Thanks
@barockeuse
@barockeuse 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Because it is the temperature of each piece which is needed for the polymerisation. So it is the temperature inside the oven which is important. But if you try to bake a very thick piece with a very thin piece, it will take a longer time for the thick piece to reach it's polymerisation temperature. So let the two pieces bake during the time adapted to the thickest piece, the thin one will support it. As she says, you can even let the pieces bake for 1 hour, the pieces will be more resistant and also more flexible. But the main thing is to never let the temperature pass over the maximum indicated on the packet of the clay you've used.

@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Polymer clay bakes at 230F-300F range depending on brand, but paper will combust at 451F. Which means... as long as you don't let the paper/cardstock touch an element or the sides of the oven, the paper/cardstock will be fine if you bake it under your clay. Do make sure you are very smart and careful about it though...you don't want a fire in your oven.

@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 5 жыл бұрын
Hi BigFoot #1, when I am baking a piece more than once, I usually bake it for about 30 mins each time and 60 mins the last time. If you bake too short on the first bakings, you risk the piece being very brittle and vulnerable to breaking. 30-40 mins is enough time to bake hard enough to not be vulnerable but not long enough for complete curing, that is why the last bake has to be the full time.

Hi, I'm a complete newbie with clay. I've started incorporating it with my jewelry and with I mean "just started" like yesterday, lol. So yeah, it took me forever to get the hang of it, but I finally did, yay. But I made a very thin bezel like piece and when I picked it up this morning it broke when I tried to bend it to see if it was hard enough. So, from what your saying I'm gathering it didn't. Are long enough? Or was it too thin? I'm sorry for asking, from your video I can see your inundated with questions about this😳 I totally get the frustration. My thing is art via painting and I get stuff like this when trying to teach it. But I'd really love to add clay into my jewelry and it's so beautiful! So I'm asking you because every video I've watched is from someone's kitchen or something. And from one professional to another I'm not sure I trust their advice. So whatever advice you could give me is really appreciate it:). Thank you for putting up your channel. Not everyone appreciates that your teaching an art for free while in reality it would cost a lot of money to take classes for this. So again thanks for everything you do😊 Take care and I look forward to hearing from you, Lauryl
@PolymerClayTutor
@PolymerClayTutor 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Laury for your kind comment! In regards to your thin piece breaking, it is not about being thing. I make tons of piece that are paper thin, yet strong enough that you can break or tear them without a real struggle. It is rather one or more of these three things: 1. weak brand of clay 2. temperature not hot enough 3. not baked long enough for all the particles to melt together in the clay. I have multiple videos on longer baking, using oven thermometers, preventing burning, choosing the right brand, that will definitely help you in your journey. I would suggest you take an afternoon and binge watch my channel... that will give you a good foundation to start with. I also have a blog (it is older but we are currently building a new one) at www.polymerclaytutor.com where I have more information, a beginners course and many paid tutorials that will help as well. Thank you so much for stopping by!
