Polyol pathway is the metabolism of excess glucose into sorbitol. Sorbitol is a monosaccharide having all six carbon alcohol group (polyol). Sorbitol pathway (polyol pathway) partly explains the microvascular complications seen in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients. Osmotic activity of sorbitol is partly responsible for the metabolic changes seen in tissue cells leading to diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, premature cataract.
