There! I said it, I think Pomodoro s*cks. It makes studying feel like a chore and takes out the biggest incentive we can give our brain with any task - entering the "flow" state.

00:49 My experience with Pomodoro
01:54 What is Pomodoro - how does it work?
03:06 Pomodoro is amazing…in theory
04:15 What is “flow”?
06:03 Why I think Pomodoro s*cks
08:50 So what is the alternative? Flowtime!
I've tried using the Pomodoro technique quite a lot of times, but it has never worked for me and I was wondering why... After a bit of digging, I realized that it doesn't work for me because it doesn't consider the fact that our brains are not wired like computers. We should rest when we feel like resting and keep working if we're enjoying it - which is exactly NOT how Pomodoro works.
Pomodoro technique was first described by Fransesco Cirillo who used a tomato-shaped timer(hence the name) to time his study sessions. He would break down his study sessions into 25 min chunks and have frequent short breaks in between. So if you follow the Pomodoro technique, you'd study/work for 25 mins, take a 5 mins break and then do another session followed by a break and another session and break and another session followed by a longer(~30mins) break. Although this sounds very solid in theory, neither do our brains have a set timer nor can we start studying very efficiently right after we come back from a break.
The better alternative and the one that I've always relied on is "FLOWTIME". Flowtime works on the concept of allowing your brain to enter flow, therefore making your brain actually like doing that task. The most basic principle of Flowtime is to Unitask - where you just do ONE task at a time and when you feel tired, you take a break and then you come back and work till you feel tired again and repeat. Maintain a table with your session start and end times and break times so you can track your sessions and see which task fits best for that part of the day.
Hope this helps!🙌🏼

The key is to do pomodoro but don’t put a timer, start studying and whenever you check the time and realize it’s been 25 mins or 50mins, if you feel like taking a break, take it, if not, don’t take it

I agree, I do this way too. I work at least 25 mins, but I can work more if I'm in the flow. Sometimes it's hard to force mysfelf to accomplish the 25 mins, but this is the point of Pomodoro, to force ourselves to do the task. This can be counterproductive occasionally when you cannot focus for 25 mins, then you should reduce the duration. But if we remove the forcing, nothing remains. Then it's not a "technique" anymore, you can just freely do whatever you like, and you have no aid to motivate yourself, what is the purpose of Pomodoro.

@Struggling Human Then do 90-20 pomodoro sessions. If you feel like you can continue without a break, you're free to do that. There shouldn't be any restrictions to your study methods. Study the way you feel the best!

Tbh what you told is so damn true! Especially for all medicos. Though I have never studied through Pomodoro technique, I've always felt it's best to go with the flow. For example, you are trying to study PSM from Park, and it takes you 30 minutes to even 'get in the zone', let alone take a break immediately after the 30 minutes! So, study till whenever your brain is in the 'zone', take a quick break and get back to studying.

This Video Made My Day! I started using the pomodoro technique recently and yesterday I worked relentlessly using it. But it made me remember my school exam days when I had to stick to a timetable thing even when I don't want to do it. And you know what happened today.... I was unable to sit for even 5minutes. I am a video editor and I love my work but cause of taking those frequent 5 min breaks and blocking myself inside a time zone made me feel like this is a thing I hate, cause I want to be free. And right now I was just searching for better pomodoro timers(I didn't know till now why I am unable to work) and found this video in the recommendations. Thanks a lot, Man! Thanks a lot. I am gonna go with my previous thing i.e, Flowtime!

It's so interesting to hear a different take on the Pomodoro experience. I think this ultimately comes down to what kind of work you do, and the type of learner you are. I recently implemented the Pomodoro technique as I was struggling to spend the whole day studying at home. My university has gone online and I'm currently getting my degree in chemical engineering so I have a lot of work all the time. I'm also in a leadership position so I'm always available to students and have to up with emails. I use Pomodoro to assign time to dedicate to assignments, and then use breaks to respond to any messages, to make some tea, eat, etc which makes my day really full. I actually find it more difficult to use Pomodoro for research projects or coding because it breaks my flow too much, while when studying or doing lectures it works a lot better. Sometimes I just make it more flexible by completing my task even when the timer has gone off. I personally like the small feelings of achievement at the end of the day and have trouble feeling motivated to get started on tasks I don't like. I think the key is to be more in tune with your own momentum and recognize what assistance you need to help be more productive. Great video though!

I understand pomodoro as a technique to experiment with in initial stages of getting into studirs and to adjust the "block time" as per the material of study and mental state of person studying. Some works are set 10min.. Sometimes 120minutes. As per requirement. I rarely set my pomodoro for 25minutes.

The reason you might not want to use the flow state to learn new things is that flow does not trigger neuroplasticity (source: Huberman Lab Podcast). Thus, if you want to retain as much information/knowledge as you possibly can, you always want the study sessions to be uncomfortable (due to you pushing yourself, not because of a timer). In these cases, flow might be suboptimal.

Listening productive youtubers can not help you for your work , they only suggest the technique that they follow, You should make and follow ur own mechanism by your comfort zone!!! ❤️

I see your point. And I very much agree that pomodoro can be counterproductive while doing activities that you actually enjoy. But also, I feel that the very origin of pomodoro was only ever for being productive while doing the monotonous/boring shit we all love to procrastinate away, but then again, leave it to humans to take an idea and generalise it to the point that it's neither recognisable nor helpful anymore. So thank you, this was a helpful sorta-mindshift. I mean, why seek help from a tool for doing something I like to do anyway!

In terms of learning and studying it is really beneficial. It is because of the focus and diffuse mode. You need to take a break to consolidate the information that you take.

Best explanation. I had the same experience. Actually I am in class 12 and side by side I do Machine Learning and web development projects also youtube and much more. So when i first encounterd this technique it used to get the task done but I never felt happy. From happy I mean i never felt I was Learning something new, it was just like I need to do a task like a robot and not feel anything. I dropped this technique within a week and consciously adopted the flow technique. This is natural but just gave it a name. The only thing is with this flow its is hard to maintain some discipline. But ya this is the best i could encounter. Amazing Video. Loved it.

Hmm, interesting take on it! For me however, I tend to study much more when I use pomodoro as a rough guideline. I don't ever study tbh and just the concept of pomodoro really pushes me to stay in the flow because otherwise I'd honestly just go back on my phone for the rest of the day after a 2 hour study session and never go back to studying. When I say I use it as a rough guideline, I'm basically doing what you suggested, if I'm really involved in my work, I just restart the timer and stop it in the middle when I feel done. I think the main difference for me is if I use a timer or not for my breaks. If I don't use one, I'm probably screwed

I never jived well with pomodoro, I just sit there and make myself study in 4hr chunks with a goal in mind (e.g a set number of pages to complete). I guess what I decided to do is also called flowtime because I just find it easier to have a long uninterrupted study session. I don't study outside of that unless I do 2 sessions (8hrs in a day) so it doesn't really wear me out. It's just the way my brain works, constant breaks stress me out, and I let myself sit back for 5 mins if I'm not retaining anything and I try to talk myself through that or let my mind peacefully wander. Thanks for this video, now I see some people also prefer to study like this.
