My first car was a 1976 Pontiac Catalina, with a 400 in it. The exhaust was so quiet on that thing, I could start it in the early mornings , on them cold mornings, to let it warm up, and, sometimes, when I came back outside, to leave, I could almost forget it was running, because it was as so stinking quiet and smooth.

She is definitely a runner, possibly a 428? I had a 66 Bonneville, 428, and she was a boat that would float. Would love to see you continue to refine this car and get her on the road. Might be a cool car to restore and give it to your son to drive to high school, he would be the star attraction.

Just for a reference. All Pontiac blocks are the same size. From the 326 to 455. You can check the side of the block and some have the engine size cast into them. Otherwise, you can check the code on the front flat one the passenger front of the block below the head. It should be a two letter code like YS or something. The heads have a code on the center ports. They should be Cast 62 for And air car with a 400 Cu engine if its the original one.
@BudgetBuildz
@BudgetBuildz 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for pointing that out! It’s a bad habit I have, calling them Big Blocks 🤦‍♂️ This car being a 400, our Bonneville and Starchief being 389s. I just kind of think big block compared to everything else we mess with. Great info, I really appreciate it!
@1gatomon
@1gatomon 6 ай бұрын
Having looked at the engine a bit better. I am guessing that you have a later Pontiac 400. The Brackets are around 1973 or so. The Carb is a Chevy one. Pontiac Q-jets for Pontiac are center fill not off to the side like Chevy used, The engine might smoke because the valve seals on the valves might have dried out and cracked. Its common on cars that have sat for years. You can replace them if your handy and have a Piece of rope and a valve spring compressor. The center console looked like it was mounted wrong. But. You will have to lift the car with someone in it and have them shift the shifter and watch the Trans mount for the shifter and the bracket. It might be mounted backwards. If your lucky the Grand Prix has Disk brakes (it was and option as were the famous 8 lug aluminum drum wheels) If you need any more information I am a moderator for one of the biggest Pontiac forums. Built many many cars over the years.

@@1gatomon Good eye! Yeap it’s a ‘72 date code. A bit of a bummer over the original ‘68 but someone atleast took the time to install the 4 barrel intake. I still need to dig into the trans some more and hopefully we can get it figured out 🙂 I really appreciate that! I will let you know what we run into and keep you in mind. We’re hunting a reasonable and decent front valance currently.

@@1gatomon first thing I noticed was engine being painted wrong color. Those were prone to stripping the nylon timing gear
@1gatomon
@1gatomon 6 ай бұрын
I'm taking a shot that the engine being painted Chevy red gives it a chance at being rebuilt. If the timing chain is original it will show up later when the timing light will not be steady when giving it a tune up. Its not hard to pull the timing cover and replace it with a nice double roller set. The big Pontiac have such a huge engine bay. @@michaelcoonce6694

I used to own a 68 Grand Prix back in the early 80's. I unfortunately had to sell it as it had a radiator leak and I ended up burning up the motor because my GP didn't have gauges. All it had were idiot lights and by the time my overheat light came on it was too late. I melted 2 pistons and 4 valves on one side of the motor. I always loved the look of the 68. It had the retractable headlights and the "L" shaped tail lights in the rear bumper. Great body lines too! My GP had the 400 small block in it though. Not the big block. I'd love to get another one but those things cost a fortune to find a decent one. Good find sir!!!!!

There's no "big block" or "small block" Pontiac. From 326 to 455, they all share the same external dimensions. Not sure about the '50s 267 or the lame ass 80s 301, though.

Very cool car. Not bad shape either. Did you seriously taste the oil? WOW. I love old Pontiac's but I don't think I would go that far. Oh, and paint that engine back to the right color and save it from any more embarrassment. Pontiac

I was telling my sister today why it is your channel that I'm always looking forward to. Your ability to take a long abandoned and buried vehicle from some scrap yard or elsewhere and once you have it in your yard (versus a well appointed shop)* you and your father take what seems to be a ugly duckling to a life it had left long ago in a state of suspended animation just waiting for a rebirthing so to speak. The entire video is well edited and the story told along the way has grown to be better each time over the many uploads. You two are humble but way deserving of much in the way of engine revival accolades most duely deserved. *such as VGG or JYDigs, and more in line with another favorite of mine but so polar opposite from yours is Dal'un at PBG.
