I remember thinking when I first saw this painting, that it must be a modern work added to the church, and I was absolutely gob-smacked when I discovered it was Renaissance. It is striking in so many ways and I went back to see it many many times in the 6 months I spent in that glorious city.

this painting has always rubbed me the special way. thank you for covering him in this episode; Pontormo just seems so modern, it's magical to think how ahead his time he was, at least in this opus

I would also like to hear about the choice of coloration in this painting. How he used almost "pop art" type of vibrant colours. And the garments. Some of the figures looked in nudes but for the vibrant colours. It as if they were wearing body tight lycra like athletes. Highly unusual for the type of painting from that era.

Please please please also cover Pontormo’s Visitation. His use of pinks is like no one else I’ve ever seen

An other manierist masterpiece is the Rosso Fiorentino's deposition in Volterra (Pisa)

Fascinating! The flow of fabrics makes it almost difficult to tell where some figures begin and others end. I'm curious about the young blond man on the far right who's looking out at the viewer. He seems to be completely out of the action.

Why are they whispering? It reminds me of Michael Keaton in the movie The Other Guys lol. Google the whisper fight scene. I love Mannerism and all renaissance art thank you for posting!
