The Soya, originally named Volochaevets, was launched at the Kawaminami shipyard in 1938.
She was commissioned by the Soviets but never delivered.
Instead, she was completed as an icebreaking freighter and transferred to the IJN in 1940, where she received her new name.
After the Second World War, the Soya was converted for use as a research vessel for the Antarctic.
