PONYO LOVES HAM! PONYO LOVES SOSUKE! Ponyo is pure joy. Miyazaki's strange take on the Little Mermaid fable is largely considered one of his lesser works, but those people are WRONG. In this video I break down how the fun meme/rallying cry for Ponyo fans, "Ponyo loves ham" is actually perfectly representative of the exact thing that makes Ponyo such a joy to watch. MEME MEETS THEME, BABY. PONYO PONYO PONYO FISHY IN THE SEA!

I always thought it was silly for people to not think this was as good as Miyazaki's other movies, because he's at his best when he's showing the slice of life moments, and despite the fantasy elements, this is a sweet little fable about friendship and family, in the same vein as Totoro. Plus the underwater animation is some of the best you'll ever see; the real world always looks so dull after watching this lol

ponyo is my favorite ghibli film. i grew up in florida and the scene with ponyo and sosuke riding out the storm in their cozy house really reminds me of the storms and hurricanes i experienced as a kid. the little lamp, the darkness outside caused by the storm, it really hits home for me. it’s my go to movie when i’m sad and it always makes me feel so much better 🥺❤️

Love this new vid, I think Ghibli in general is really good at showing a lot but giving few answers in a way that always felt natural and reasonable to me...Like in Howls Moving Castle there's this massive war going on, but we know so little about it overall and it's because Sophie your average citizen isn't privy to or always focused on the war and I always liked that, I feel like if it was a more westernised Hollywood film there would be a big shift of focus onto the war being fought instead of the magic, the individual, and the love story at the core of the film

I watched Miyazaki films growing up. I still have them on DVD. I never _disliked_ Ponyo, but it was further down the list in terms of my favorites. Though, I never understood _why._ It just never really seemed to "click" with me like the other films, even though I had seen them all from a young age. Watching the film, I could never really tell what exactly it was about. It was like... nonsense for me, almost. Meaningless nonsense, it felt like. If you had asked me what Ponyo was about, I would have fumbled for an answer. And I never managed to figure out why on my own. To learn that the meaning of this film is all about experiencing things for the first time and that whole aspect of "childlike wonder"... that knowledge kind of depresses me, admittedly. Throughout childhood, I spent the vast majority of my free time alone in my room. Times I spent with others were mundane, repetitive, and lacked any substantial meaning. I actually changed friends frequently, 'cause it ultimately didn't matter exactly who it was. I didn't really form any bonds - it was always just a means of diversion. And yes, I experienced new things at a normal rate. But very little of it actually surprised or amazed me. I feel like the things that gave me that sense were things that I discovered on my own during all that time I spent alone in my room. Conceptual things, mostly coming from literature like Miyazaki-san's movies. I feel like my inner world was always colorful, while the outside world was always bleak and sad. All my moments of joy and discovery came from being alone, while all my painful experiences came from having to face reality. I guess, from that perspective, it makes sense why I never felt any sort of semblance with Ponyo, huh? The thought of being presented with a wonderful, exciting new reality just wasn't ever something I could relate to. ^^' ...also, I never liked ham.

Princess Mononoke needs to be on that list too. Here is an odd one for that list, Porco Rosso. Miyazaki seems to have a love for flying. It comes in time and time again, in movie after movie. I find it amazing how he makes so many great films, and I can't really think of any actual villains in any of them.

Your point is valid, but I think the thing about Ponyo was the same thing all these movies had. It always felt like there was something else not shown in the movie that they refuse to look twords or focus on that I want to see. I think the only movie that didn't give me that feeling was Kiki's delivery service. I do think it's fair that some of it is cultural stuff, like a movie America might make will show stuff culturally that other people would be confused about, like...anything in Spirited Away.

Amelie is happiness and whimsy incarnate, and now it's dubbed in English so you won't have to struggle translating the rapid-fire French. But Ponyo was terrifying in certain regards; the world was literally ending around those children and because they were so young, I'm not sure they grasped the gravity of the situation. It was yet another of Miyazaki's heavy handed and rightfully deserved focal points for environmentalism. Seeing just as "Ponyo loves Ham" is fine if you're a child, but otherwise, you are downright ignoring Miyazaki's message of preserve the earth...the dude started a nature preserve for a reason.
@Johnny2Cellos
@Johnny2Cellos 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not ignoring anything. The focal point of this video, and why I think Ponyo is so great, is the sense of childlike wonder. Just because I’m analyzing that specific aspect of the film doesn’t mean other aspects of the film don’t exist. There’s plenty more to analyze, even outside of the environmental ideas. I think Nausicaa and Mononoke do a much more thorough job of showcasing environmental issues. While Ponyo touches on those things, it hardly makes them a focal point. The storm and flood aren’t presented as terrifying, and they’re also shown to specifically be a result of Ponyo’s own magic. Embracing “Ponyo loves ham” is fine for anybody. You can embrace that aspect of the film AND appreciate other messages and themes. This video focused on this aspect.
