One of the best season one episodes. I like that Mabel's new crush this time around is actually a great guy, and you want them to be together but know that nature makes it impossible. The scenes with Mr. Poolcheck were hilarious, and so was Stan and Gideon's rivalry for the perfect chair. And yeah, that poor kid in solitary. Seriously what the hell did he do?

He’s not yelling at Wendy because Dipper has the night shift. Wendy is the ACTUAL lifeguard remember? She’s only there to make sure nobody drowns or breaks the rules. It’s Dipper’s responsibility to watch the supplies, use of supplies, and things of that sort as the ASSISTANT Lifeguard. So he was only yelling at him over the Pool Skimmer not the behavior.

Fascinating listening to the episode commentary tracks where you learn that most fan favorite episodes are ones that the crew really struggled to get just right. Apparently the crew was stumped as to how flesh out Mermando and ensure he wasn't another crush of the week. Most of the writers were ready to call it a day and move on but Alex was determined to get it right and they eventually came up with the idea that it's Mabel's first kiss.

Salt-water dolphins are actually more closely related to beluga whales and narwhals than they are to river dolphins, and all toothed cetaceans are closer related to each other than to baleen whales. So dolphins are 100% whales

Just a little fun fact - There are number right at the end of the credits ( in this one it's right below the credit clip), that is actually a hidden message that can be broken with the A1Z26 cipher from E14 till E16 then from E21 its the keyed Vigenère cipher

So I know it’s not really a part of the video, but they did mention that killer whale is a weird name since it’s a dolphin (even though dolphins are part of the toothed whale family tree). Pretty sure the name killer whale was mistranslated as whale killer, as it’s known to be able to take down small whales. But I might be wrong and mistaken but thought it was interesting to share.

I think Mr. Poolcheck also takes some inspiration from Ren & Stimpy characters who look like a very intense version of Kirk Douglas (such as Powdered Toast Man), maybe with some Michael Douglas thrown in for good measure.

Yup. Orcas are closer to dolphins than whales. Orcas also have social trends. In was inn among orcas to carry their kills on their head above the water for a while. Then it was inn to attack yats in a specific way. It's a game. A meme. A culture.

Orcas are the smartest thing on the planet that doesn't have two thumbs and a last name. Dolphins in general are just kind of right behind humans intelligence wise. Don't know who would be three probably one of the other great apes or elephants. Corvids and octopuses are really smart too

Just a small correction to the Whale/Orca/Dolphin tangent. While yes, Orcas are part of the Dolphin Family of Animals they are in fact also Whales as Dolphins themselves are a subfamily of Whales like Filterfeeding Whales etc. Not trying to be a smartass just give some extra Info I think y'all might appreciate :)

Killer whales are porpoise, not dolphin but close. All of them are considered toothed whales .

Nope, orcas are in the family Delphinidae, aka dolphins. Porpoises are in the family Phocoenidae.

I love this episode so much. it really does a great job managing both a solid main story with mabel and mermando and the background stories with the rest of the crew. the jokes are so good in this series, the references, and the like left turns they take on old tropes always get me to giggle. also the fact that mabel and dipper both had the same first kiss was pretty funny. The cryptogram in the end credits reads "22-9-22-1-14 12-15-19 16-1-20-15-19 4-5 12-1 16-9-19-3-9-14-1." Once decoded it translates to "VIVAN LOS PATOS DE LA PISCINA," which is Spanish for "LONG LIVE THE POOL DUCKS."
