In this Episode I have a great shotmaking drill for you. It contains 30 single shots, where the cue ball is placed on the rail or very close to it. You can vary around with this depending on your own level.
You will improve:
- Your feel for these long tough shots with difficult angles
- Better alignment
- Straight cueing
- Focus
Join me for: Pool Drill | The Shotmaking Drill I Do Before Every Tournament! (Cue Ball On The Rail)

After finding this channel a couple weeks ago, I just started doing a similar drill and a variation of your yo-yo drill for warmups before each match at an amateur tournament in vegas last week. ( I never really knew how to drill properly or even care to, due to lack of goals) Just 20 minutes and I can't believe how much better my play and focus was. As an average/natural B to B+ player, I was easily playing at mid A level. It's completely changed my outlook of the game and I'm developing some goals for the next year. How I wish I would've found mentors or partners like you in my early 20's. Now I have a teenager that's interested in learning the game and your channel will become so valuable. Keep up the great work!!!!

Super good drill and a GREAT warm up drill. I do a number of these shots from about one ball off the rail before I play. I will now move the ball to the rail or maybe finger tip off the rail. Makes the shots even tougher. These are real shots that need to be made in almost any game.

Thats reassuring for me because sometimes it is easy to get frustrated when practicing and i don't make the shot on the first or second attempt. Good tune-up drill. Tried this Niels and did surprisingly well with 4” pockets albeit with 0.75 ball distance from rail. A third of shots I got the two sides in 3 total shots, 1/3 perfect, 1/3 4 or 5. I will try again 1/2 inch from the cushion. Reinforces my believe that I am a good shot maker who really needs a lot of position and pattern practice so I am still spending alot of my time on Eckert’s PAT 3 drills. I actually make less errors on long shots than when doing closer work!

Noted Gabriel! Thank you for your feedback. 👊 I have actually made a video about aiming - well a complete series called "Back to The Basics". In one of these videos I take you through my aiming vision. Please feel free to have a look at it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ocijabJ02cXdfaM.html I believe that this exercise and these kind of shots is a mix of using the right stroke (don't force it and don't roll it) and aiming! It's not a 'thing' you just master because you have had a nice practice session one time. These shots is something you have to keep in touch with and that's why I keep practicing them EVERY time before going to a tournament! 🔥 Hope this explains it a bit. Take care! 😊 Niels

Yes Sir, you pick some very tough shots for drills there my man! Good practice for sure! Part of practice is learning "smart" shots ---- and making the right choice. The more familiar you are with a shot, your percentages increase tremendously. It will also "gauge" you on your focus and feel at the time ... thing to pay closer attention to when "play" starts. One thing I did notice --- you are very comfortable going to your left!!! :) These drills will tune you up and help zero you in when it comes time to play --- freshen-up will ya!?! Be Safe

I love your mental examples of why you’re shooting them. I wish I had more time to play. Curious to how you edited the film for the “2nd attempts” I actually would practice a bit of these from the kitchen on my own to make sure I’m feeling good and in-line. But not this thorough but it does bring up your % I would love a video on how to appropriate English on shots. The length of the table makes the shot 10x harder using English ( inside outside )

My gratitude goes to you for another informative tutorial Niels! When I shoot a cue ball frozen to or very near the rail, I choke up on my grip and hold the cue a touch firmer than I do with my regular grip. Aim along the vertical axis of the cue ball. Shorter backswing and a "punch" stroke like how the snooker player shoots. Do you recommend these techniques? What should we look for in our technique when we practise this drill? Thank you so much! These shots cause me panic attacks in a match so I guess doing them in this drill a hundred times should relax me. Some of those are so tough that I don't if going for them is the right shot, that's a question I've always had but never heard any pro mention when to play safe and when to go for it. I always try to pot everything and it costs me a lot of games.

I just had to laugh when one of your shots came up in a match. And of course I missed it. But ever since I've been practicing it more. 9ball 1 diamond away from the corner on the end rail after player missed, cue ball half Diamond away from other end corner pocket. Definitely wasn't a favorite to make it cause eye sight is going but I did end up winning that Monday Night weekly tournament collected $580 us for first place at Steinway Billiards 🤫

The #1 problem for amateurs is they don't realize that when the cueball is backed against a rail it is then an optical illusion..... because they cannot see the whole cueball they are cueing up OFF CENTER.....when shooting to the right, the right side of cueball is hidden by the cushion and they cue up getting off-center hit and cueball squirts offline.....illusion also effects their aiming..... great drill and advice from you

@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Thanks Niels, I appreciate your reply. Always enjoy your videos! The vid in the link confirms my thinking too. The ghost ball has it's challenges too I guess. Trying to visualize something that isn't really there and aim at a tiny spot on a sphere and strike it with with another sphere takes a lot imagination sometimes😊😊. I have worked some with Stan Shuffett's CTE and benefited from it on a lot of shots, it's a bit more objective but like anything else it takes a lot of time and practice to "get it right". I think you're right about our unique equipment and the individual 'feel' we have to develop over time, always lots of variables to consider.

what’s the main source that transfer energy to cue (stroke). Elbow ? Shoulder ? Biceps? Gravity? Etc. It will help me a lot if I know

Hello Neil can you give some tips to improve non-dominant arm?
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen

You mean practicing with left - when you normally play with your right hand? (or the other way around 😅) Well, a good start is to have some fun with all 15 balls on the table and just go ahead and make them all 💪😎

Hello Niels, how often should a beginner practice shotmaking drills ?
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen 4 ай бұрын
Not very often. Because the cue ball control is not developed so well yet, a beginner will do a lot of shotmaking all the time already. The better the cue ball control will become, then the shotmaking has to stay on track 😄💪🏼

Good question! It's important to work on your fundamentals and of course drills suited to your level. Many of my videos are based on exercises, where you can built it up and adjust it to the level you are at now! Please feel free to check out my "Back to The Basics" serie and also feel free to contact me at my PATREON page, where I offer Personal Player Reviews which will speed up your learning curve!!! 🔥😉😉 kzfaq.info/sun/PLzjzZn8Miek1gDQaNlkuB32AHRdwGZwJw www.patreon.com/terminatortips

These are very difficult shots and I understand why its a great drill. However in competition would it be better to play a safe on some of these shots to increase your chances of winning?
@AdamGuitar87
@AdamGuitar87 2 жыл бұрын
It is a great drill. Imagine that this is the last ball in the match - playing safety here from the rail is almost impossible. It is better to give yourself a chance of winning than giving your opponent a shot. Simple. Awesome Niels!

I'd say if you're down to the money ball, go for it on most occasions. Consider ducking if you're current confidence level isn't great or you're realistic about your skill level and pretty sure you'll be unable to run out. It's situational.

I do warm up with shots like these before my matches, maybe 3-4 of them. And I do them mostly to guage where I'm at that day with my fundamentals -is my body position in line with the shot, am I staying down, is my action smooth The truth is I learn way more from the shots I miss than the ones I make. This is a very effective and powerful drilll. Thank you.
