Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL

10 жыл бұрын

In this training video I go over skimming the pool surface and bottom as well as brushing the pool and cleaning the pool tile. It seems basic but there is a specific technique when skimming a brushing a swimming pool.
I am training my Nephew Nathan for one month and then he is on his own. I landed him a part time job but first I need to get him ready.
The Series:
This is a set of in-depth training videos that I decided to put on KZfaq. I could charge for this video series and or sell a DVD version but I feel that it better serves people if they are FREE. Of course if you find this series helpful in learning how to do service as a business or in training your teenagers how to maintain the family pool, feel free to Donate ;)
Please visit my website, any donation is greatly appreciated. WEBSITE: www.swimmingpoo...
These videos will be longish and not cleanly edited as I want to show as much information as possible so that you can copy these techniques accurately. Hopefully not boring but educational.
Here are the parts for this series:

If this is your first job working for the Public, be prepared to for negativity. Some will be well pleased at your work but others will be impossible to please. They will say the pool smell funny, the water tastes bad. What did you do with my pool? You will hear it all eventually. Those who are happy with your work, will tell no one. Those dissatisfied with your work, will post it on every social media source to which they have access.

I recently opened my 33 x 18 above ground pool for the summer. I had the sand filter turned on and the skimmer was taking in water and it was going through the pool circulating everything was normal. I had a alot of algae and green stuff at the bottom of my pool .i then started to vacuum my pool once i saw everything was working good. When i started to vacuum the pool on waste every 5 minutes its seemed like the filter basket on the pump was clogged and i lost my vacuum suction.So I would go over top the pump clean out the basket do a quick back wash and recirculate.Then the system would work ok for another 5 minutes. The 3 rd time this happened I went top the pump shut it off and stuck my hand in the pump to see if it was blocked and i pulled hand fulls of sand out of the pump?. After i cleaned the sand i got everything closed up i opened the water and the pump was trying to move but couldn't i guess it still had sand in it so i shut it off right away. (1.) I wanted to know what i have done wrong to get sand go back into the pump and (2). how to fix it. I was assuming that i disconnect the pump and turn it upside down to get the sand out and try to flush it out with the hose? Not sure what to do ?

Second pool, but I've failed this time around. There was an unsightly white line at the water line this pool season, so I purchased Bio-Dex 300 to clean the tile. I allowed drip marks that won't come off the tile. Instead of the "unsightly white line," now there is a ghosting all over the tiles. Tried pure muriatic acid all over the tiles to no avail. Have I permanently disfigured the tile? We have a salt system.

does dish soap disrupt the balance of the pool (ph, alkalinity, etc.)?
@SPL

No. Most dish soap in such a small quantity is fine. They don't contain any phosphates or other things that will upset the balance. Large amounts maybe. you are just using a fraction of it mixed with water.

doesn't the dish soap alter the surface tension and let light debris sink?

+shoopwhoopX Not really. It pulls all the debris into clumps and usually draws them away from the middle of the pool. It also allows you to see the bottom very clearly eliminating sun glare. I use pool tile soap diluted.

How physically demanding would you say this job is generally? I see some ads where people say you need to be able to lift anywhere from 50-75 pounds. What are the most common physical complaints? Thanks!
@SPL
@SPL 3 жыл бұрын
I would say you will rarely lift more than 50 lbs. That is the largest chemical bucket size. But there are plenty of tricks you can use. For me when I have heavy loads like that I pull my truck down my driveway to the slope, then lower my tail and easily lift anything less than 1 ft off the ground. I also use a dolly to transport stull back to customers house. Again that is a 50 lbs bucket of tablets or a 40 l bs bag of salt. Not a common everyday thing. The most lifting you will do each day is 8-10 lbs.

Love your videos, really helped me wonders! One question why don't you just brush walls first to loosen up debris stuck on tile? Keep up the great videos! & have a great week!
@SPL
@SPL 9 жыл бұрын
Jake Zadori Time is the key with a pool route. Aggressive skimming will loosen up just about everything two times around. After skimming I will brush the tiles with a tile brush. By then anything that falls to the bottom will be ready to be vacuumed or skimmed up. I walk back there with the net attached so it is just easier to start that way. I also find that if I brush the tiles first more stuff falls to the bottom which is counter productive to time. Great question and point.
@jakezadori8914

Thank You for the quick response ! That makes complete sense ! I as well always walk back there with net attached, odly I always remove net and go to pump and turn on first then check chems, add chems & brush then skim, but I'll definitely try the opposite tomorrow xD awesome videos and response time! Hello, We live in AZ and have an all tile pool. There is a Sonoran Emerald tree about 10 feet from the pool. I constantly have little tiny leaves and short string like pieces in my pool. On a breezy day I could stand there all day skimming! Very frustrating. I am deciding whether to cut the tree down or get a pool cover. Any thoughts? We use the pool on average of 2 to 3 times a week.

I discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and am really enjoying your videos. I must say, you are a real good guy and a very generous soul to produce all of these videos you have done, for others. Now, this may be a dumb question, but at the first pool there was a poolvergnugen cleaner, so why was there still debris on the bottom? I am considering this cleaner, and I was surprised to see it had not picked up everything. Thanks.
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
That account is always pretty bad. The cleaner comes on around 9 am and I was there in this video around 7:30 am. It has lots of trees over the pool and in the afternoon it gets breezy sometimes. So normally it is spotless. This debris was from the evening before I got there. Watch part 4 on the automatic cleaners on my route and you will see more of these in action. Without this cleaner this pool would be trashed each week.

I just discovered your videos while trying to learn a bit about pool servicing. They're extremely informative. I live in Florida where virtually every pool has a screened cage around it. I see in a lot of your videos the pools you service are full of tree debris. I was just curious as to where you service and how long it takes you to service an uncovered pool? Also, in my area it seems like the standard rate for pool service is about 125.00 per month. (servicing weekly) Do you think that is very low compared to other areas? Thanks again for the awesome videos.
@SPL
@SPL 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback. $125 is not bad for Florida screened in pools. I am in Southern California and we have zero screened in pools. Mainly because of the high winds all year round or they just never caught on. It takes about 15-20 minutes per pool with the right equipment unless the pool has really bad debris levels which takes it to 25-30 minutes.

Usually a drain and acid wash will get rid of the staining. If it is Iron staining which is common Ascorbic Acid might remove them. You can test a spot with a Vitamin C tablet. If the stain fades or is gone completely an ascrobic acid treatment might work. I have a pool pump it's a Jacuzzi Magnum force and I replaced the shaft seal and after I put everything back together I tried to turn it on and it keeps tripping the breaker. At first I thought I had hooked the wires up backwards but then I switched them and it is still tripping the breaker. Do you have any advice?
@SPL
@SPL 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like impeller is off center and is getting jammed. See if it spins freely - turn off pump - take off pump lid, remove basket and spin the impeller with your hand or a screwdriver. It should spin if it is not jammed.
@kennyboulton6711
@kennyboulton6711 7 жыл бұрын
The impeller doesn't move real easy. I took it apart again to make sure I put the seals in correctly and they are fine but the impeller doesn't move as freely as the shaft. Idk, it's an old motor and I'm thinking it maybe a weak breaker or the capacitor maybe bad. It's a friend and I was just doing this repair as a favor.

It is a good idea but no one really does it. If you can afford to risk losing some of these Junk Accounts - simply raise the monthly rates. If losing accounts would affect your total income then maybe invest in the Power Vac PV2100 for those accounts. Or charge them thru some disguised fees like a yearly Conditioner charge of $30 and maybe bump up the filter cleaning charge by $5 on all your accounts. This will offset the time you waste at these Junk Accounts. I know it is frustrating - lots of Oak trees and Redwood trees in my service area also. Apparently Mr. Huntington liked Redwood trees and planted them all over San Marino. Nice of him.

As the owner of a "Junk Account", I assume the $180/month quoted to clean my pool had a premium built in for them because of my four Oak trees. Price them accordingly while quoting the pool owners in the first place and you shouldn't have to raise your prices in a hidden/dishonest/sleezy way. Just be honest up front and tell them if anyone does it for any less they will be either rushing or raising their price soon after getting the account.

How much do you make for a pool guy?
@SPL
@SPL 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on your area and the amount of pools you service each week. Typically $50-$70 is the average

That's not how you do it,stick in the skimmer first thing,brush ,net, by the time vacuum is primed up and you vacuum, no need to prime hose waste of time
