PoolRx is a Mineral Technology does two very simple things when used in your pool or spa; it eliminates all algae and will allow you to use less chlorine during the pool season. The active ingredient is Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate (chelated).
What Chelated means is that the metals in the PoolRx have been bonded to form two coordinated bonds similar to what Metal Sequestering Agents do. This means that the Metal Ions will remain in the PoolRx unit with no metal ions being introduced into the pool or spa water. PoolRx is Chelated so the metal ions stay within the PoolRx unit itself.
Make sure that you choose the right size PoolRX unit so that the treatment will be effective. You can place it either in your skimmer or pump basket. When you first insert the unit run your pool for 3-4 hours. Then run it the normal cycle to get at least one full cycle of water from the pool, into the filter and back into the pool again. The PoolRx unit should last 4-6 months.
PoolRx eliminates all algae fast. Even micro algae that you can't see but uses up the chlorine in your pool.
It works effectively in old water that has high TDS, high CYA and high Phosphate levels as well as in new water. See the cautions below if you are using PoolRX with high CYA levels see the caution below. It doesn't matter if your Phosphate level is 10,000, PoolRx will prevent algae growth no matter the Phosphate levels.
PoolRx is ideal for a salt water pools also. It will extend the life of your salt cell as you run the system at a lower output while PoolRx is present in the pool, typically 50% less output. PoolRx minerals also include a de-scaler that will prevent scale from attaching to the salt cell meaning less cleaning of the cell is needed. Also since it is generating less, the pH won't rise as high requiring less acid to be added to the pool.
PoolRx is compatible with just about every product. However, don’t use with copper based algaecides, sodium bromide or bromine. If using with Cal-Hypo, dilute first before adding to pool. I suggest you avoid Cal-Hypo entirely when using PoolRx in your pool.
PoolRx uses proprietary chelating agent that prevents fall out and staining due to pH fluctuation or over oxidation. This means PoolRx is very stable and effective in some of the worst water possible and toughest pool conditions, but there are limits to any product.
Keep your pool in normal chemistry ranges. The recommended range is:
Chlorine 0.5-1.0 ppm
pH 7.2-7.8
Alkalinity 80-120
Cyanuric Acid 10-80
High CYA
If your CYA is above 100, be sure to do an “adjusted alkalinity calculation”. And keep your pH and Alkalinity in normal ranges. PoolRx works in extreme environments with high TDS and where CYA is 150-200+. However, understand that if your CYA is at a saturation point, and water gets out of balance, the CYA can come out of solution. If it does this, the CYA can coagulate the PoolRx minerals, which combined, will show up as a purple dust in the pool. This dust can be brushed up but won’t go away until you reduce CYA levels in the water. Or dust will stick to the scale build up on the surface. Once the CYA levels drop to normal levels the Purple dust will disappear.
Existing copper in water
If you think you have existing copper in your water, from old copper plumbing or an old copper heat exchange that has been leaching copper in the water, or from cheap non chelated copper algaecides, or well water, test for copper first before using PoolRx. You can take a water sample to your local pool store or get some Copper test strips, they actually work pretty well.
If you have under .02ppm of copper in the water, it is OK to use PoolRx. If your copper test reads higher than .02ppm, we recommend using CuLator. Unlike a sequestering agent that only hold metals in solution, CuLator physically pulls metals out of the water. Test every 4-6 months. To learn more about Culator and getting rid of Metals in your pool water see this playlist for a series of videos:
Metal in Your Pool Water:
• Metal in Your Pool Water
High TDS, High CYA, overdosing.
If the water is saturated with TDS and CYA or you over dose, the PoolRx minerals won’t have any room to dissolve into solution in the water and will stay in granular form. If this happens the minerals may have to be vacuumed up, and or, they can stick to the scale build up on the surface. If this happens, vac, dilute and get rid of scale. It is important to know your correct pool size so that you get the right size PoolRx unit for your pool.
PoolRx will essentially save you money as you use less chlorine in all forms including 3” Tablets and it eliminates the need for Algaecides, clarifiers, Phosphate removers and other chemicals.

Just put in a pool and have been taking care of it myself. Everything was going great my first summer until we all went boating at the local lake. Our suits and pool toys were in the lake and then back in the pool. I started to see some algae. Cleaned my filter and then added a Pool RX and the water has never been clearer. It really works well.

I've switched almost completely over to PoolRX on my route. I have over 30 pools with the PoolRX unit in them. For me the number one benefit is how the PoolRX enhances the chlorine. Rarely do the pools with the PoolRx zero out week to week. It is pretty amazing how well the chlorine holds in the pools with PoolRX in them. The units is rated to last 4-6 months so the price point is similar if you calculate Swimtrine use over a 6 month period. Try it - you will like it.

I was having some minor algae bloom issues and got poolrx (blue < 20K gallons) in July 2017; very little issues after that. I see I can buy another blue poolrx or just the booster. I believe from their website it implies you should use the booster after say 6 months after getting the full unit and that beginning of pool season should get another full blue unit, ie. can't keep getting boosters with the old unit after a year. Does every one always get a new unit each year or boosters going fwd after the one time unit start?
@SPL
@SPL 6 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you are having success with the product. You would use the booster in season if the unit wears off within the 4-6 month period. But after one year the reason you need to replace the unit is because calcium will form on it making it less effective. So the rule of thumb for the booster is to use it within the first 4-6 month period and get a new unit at the start of every season.

I just purchased a blue unit (16000 gal pool) and hopefully this will do the job. The algae in CA this year is the worst I've seen since owning a pool. I get the pool perfectly clear and 5 days later it starts to cloud, then turn green. I've had to clean filters every week, which I've never had to do. Q: It sounds like placing it in your pump basket, (not the low-pressure skimmer), it would have more effect with the higher water flow through that area? By doing this, will it lower the product's life-span or will I still get 6 months out of it?
@SPL

Same lifespan in pump basket - it works much better in their than the skimmer basket. And yes, the algae this year in Ca. has been very bad.

Hello, I have a pool that has been painted yars back. Last yr I did not had any trouble with maintenance even though it had an old d.e filter and sucky water pump. This yr. a sand filter was installed and a brand new water pump. 1hp. circulation is great however after 3-4week with new water and new everything water started looking milky. Water levels as we speak. CYA 60ppm Calcium 210ppm Chlorine 3ppm Alkalinity 90ppm ph 7.4ppm after 2 days of full circulation waster stayed the same. So here is where I come back with the paint, can the paint be causing this issue? and how to fix it. thankyou..

It could be the paint, but maybe the new sand filter is not filtering the water well. Sand filters are pretty inefficient - I would have to see a photo of the water to see which it is. swimmingpoollearning@gmail.com

So question david is it possible to oxide the copper in pool rx unit. If you add calhypo to a pool with an rx unit. My friend that i thought he how to maintain her pool a year ago . just did a back wash on a de filter and also had shocked the pool with call hypo. But the pool get cloudy after the back wash and looks a little green, however i am sure it aint algae. Due to holding clorine level of 2 AMD i know the effectiveness of pool rx on algae. It also looks like sand got back into the pool. I am leaning towards broken grid or copper got oxidized. Or both scenarios. Have not seen this scenario
@SPL

Sounds like just DE leaking in the pool. When the PoolRx gets oxidized it is a black stain. Maybe replace the broken grid and see how things look after you vacuum the DE up.

Doesn't the Pool RX add metals copper to the water? Is it actually effective with FC below 1.5? Do you see *any* algae in the pools that use this product with such low chlorine? *provided the chemistry is correct of course.
@SPL
@SPL 7 жыл бұрын
It is a misnomer that it adds metal to the pool. It is chelated which means the metal ions are bonded to the PoolRx unit much like what metal sequestering agents do. You cannot get any metal ion readings on a tester with PoolRx inserted. Algae will not grow when there is Copper in the water, which is how the PoolRx unit works. The Chelating is scientific process. A good rule of thumb is if a pool has algae then there are no metals in the pool water. So it prevents algae even with very low chlorine levels.

Ok I definitely need your help. This is the second season we keep getting algae. Our local pool supply store does not supply the liquid chlorine so we have been using the tabs which have stabilizer in them, and so does the shock we use when we get the algae. The cya is pretty high 150, and our chlorine is getting eaten up. Our pool is 8000 gallons. Last summer we used the yellow out and it worked but only short term and we had to keep shocking weekly. I'm afraid to add anymore shock as the cya level is so high. I just ordered the pool rx yesterday and will be getting it shortly. What should I do in the mean time? I'm afraid to add more chlorine as that has stabilizer and don't want to have a reaction with the pool rx. Just used the acid and got my ph where it needs to be. But like I said the algae is eating the chlorine. It's all dust through so easily brushes off, just won't go away with shock. What would you recommend as far as chlorine for long term as well with such high cya? We also have automatic water leveler. Thanks!
@SPL
@SPL 7 жыл бұрын
PoolRx can work with chlorine levels as high as 10 ppm so your shouldn't have a problem with adding chlorine once you use it. I suggest inserting the PoolRx in the pump basket and running your pool for a good 8-10 hours. Brush the pool walls well and then add some shock to bring the chlorine level up to 3-5 ppm. You will find the chlorine holding steady the next day.

Hi, I just recently drained and refilled my 12500 gallon pool. I put in a poolrx for the first time and learned my chemistry. The knowledge you have given me and the poolrx equals crystal clear water. Thanks. Now the QUESTION: I have ducks that poop in my pool daily. I have to sweep the pool daily because my navigator is old and only gets part of the pool while I’m at work. The filters were also brand new (generic) in a 320 pentair cartridge filter. I want to clean out the filters before the fourth of July, because I’m sure they are disgusting with all the duck Poop. I know somewhere on the podcast or the someone said to wait at least 2 weeks before cleaning the filters after installing the poolrx (installed on May 15th). Is this true or how long should I wait? I do not want to mess the pool rx up. Another question if you have the time. If I see what I suspect to be algae forming? Currently I am doing some tabs 2-3 weekly to raise my CYA level to between 30 and 40. And a daily maintenance dose of 20-60 ounces of liquid depending on how bad that day was. Shock once a week brush 1-2 times per week and daily manual sweeping. Thank you for your time. You’re my pool guru. Thanks.

Sorry, the question was whether do I do if I suspect any algae forming?

You're fine to clean the filter. The duck poop is causing the algae more or less. Try a giant swan float and an 🐊 float together in your pool. That should scare the duck away.

Question for you... I was turned on to PoolRX about 5 years ago. My pool has a 1.5hp Challenger pump, is 12,000 gallons, cylinder cartridge filter, and has a passive (rubber tubing) solar panel for heating the pool. I've noticed that after about 1 day after introducing either a new PoolRX (blue barrel) unit (in the basket) or the booster (in the skimmer)... my pump starts having issues with pressure and circulating water for weeks afterwards. I've even had to purge air from the system multiple times even though a licensed pool specialist has confirmed there are no leaks or clogs in the system. I replaced the pump about a year ago thinking the older pump was just near end of life, but the new pump has the same issue. The only thing that seems to bring my pump back up to speed is when I clean the the cartridge and spray all the, almost florescent, green minerals off it. Any ideas on why PoolRX or maybe the released minerals seem to be affecting the pumps performance? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably the minerals clogging up the pool filter. Let me ask them what they suggest. I will copy and paste your issue to there tech support.

Here is the answer back from PoolRx: He needs to start with a clean filter. The minerals dissolve immediately and completely into solution in the water. If the filter is dirty, the minerals will get caught up on the dirty filter and take much longer to dissolve through into the water. This will cause high pressure. If he did have a clean filter to start... The other option would be to place the PoolRx unit in the skimmer basket. The skimmer has less suction and it will give minerals more time to dissolve into solution before passing through the filter. Be sure to have at least 4-6 hours of pump run time when you place unit in skimmer or pump basket. Even with a clean filter, pressure will rise slightly until minerals pass through, this is normal and will only last a few days.

Just to add... this seems to happen regardless of the age of the cartridge filter Whether 6 month old or brand new. This is the cartridge I've been using if it makes any difference... smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JWEYG8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ... Just saw your reply. I haven't tried putting PoolRX unit in the skimmer yet. So maybe that will work. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

That is a good cartridge. I noticed you have Solar - is the line off when you add PoolRX? Maybe the added back pressure from the Solar Line on the roof causes the issue.

How would you compare this to the frog systems and say the flippin frog?

Very similar. I think the minerals are pretty close with each other.

They do different things CuLator extracts metal ions from the water PoolRx manufacturer recommends CuLator to remove any metals in the pool water first, if the test results show metal in the water. Then insert the PoolRx.

can you not just buy copper sulfate by itself and add it to the pool?
@SPL
@SPL 2 жыл бұрын
You can but it has the potential to stain the surface. The metal in the PoolRx is suspended.

Friend of mine used this on his route and 90% of the pool started to get a lot of black stains all over the pool. Be careful with the pool rx

If there is metal in the pool, Copper, when you insert the PoolRx it will react and drop out of the water. I talked to manufacturer about this at length. It is not metal coming from the PoolRx unit. If the pool does not have metal in it to begin with PoolRx is perfectly safe. Metal Ions in the pool water is not very common in Ca. Other states that use a lot of well water seem to have more metal problems. That is probably the issue. Another caution he mentioned is very high CYA. Thanks for the heads up.

Would this help a pool company be more profitable? If so, how? Thanks!

You would charge the customer's for the PoolRx unit and then use much less chemicals on your route. No more algaecides and a lot less shocking of the pools. Many pool companies use it for their pool route. Adam Covarrubias who posted here swears by it. PoolRx has a complete PDF on how it helps pool service companies and how to sell it to your customers: poolrx.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/PoolRX-Catalog-WEB-3-2-15.pdf

Jonathan Longoria it will make your company more profitable. Even if you sell the poolRX's close to nothing the amount of chemicals you would be saving would pay for its self with the summer. I'm a firm believer in the less chemicals you add to pools the better off the pool is long term.
