Cheap Menards kayak fishing modifications.
This video was put together as a inexpensive way to get your sit in kayak water ready for fishing. I show you how to install heavy duty handles, an inexpensive anchor trolley system, flush mount rod holders and rod leashes.
Keep in mind this is a sit in kayak, the open cockpit will allow water to get in. That being said, I do not use silicone on my drilled holes. What I do is use a rubber washer that fits the stainless steel screw nice and snug and then a stainless washer slightly over sized to the rubber washer to create a water tight seal. You will get more water through the cockpit opening then any hole on this kayak if any at all. These are inexpensive modifications to get on the water. At any time you can take these ideas and upgrade to better quality material and maybe even build on these ideas and make them better, it’s your yak. Keep in mind that any cuts and or holes you make a very hard to repair so measure tice cut once. Some of these mods are necessary and some may not be for your style of fishing. Be sure to check out my playlist of other kayak mods that may be helpful.

Great video. I applaud the fact that you use nuts and bolts and nut just screws. This is more secure. Tip: Use heat shrink to cover your paracord knots, instead of tape.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzfaq.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Keep in mind zip ties break down in the sunlight, I would recommend replacing any ziptie exposed to sunlight at least once per year. Somebody already mentioned backing plates, another alternative is LARGE fender washers, available at hardware stores or big box lumberyard/home improvement stores.

I came across this as I was looking for some mod ideas to make our little dolphins a little more "fun", versatile, lake machines...as the broke mom, I found this quite sensible to do to save us from wanting something else that wont fit on my Aveo roof. Also appreciate the use of washers/rubber gaskets as the marine silicone is not budget friendly. lovin it, thanks for posting and giving me some confidence to drill into a perfectly good boat skin...eek!...lol. I got us those little dock rods instead of long rods because they fit inside the rig for car travel. (no large fish here)Mounted them with velcro tape... and put two mesh zippered school supply bags for small items on the inside (also with velcro tape), one on each side these are great for keys, radio/cell phone in a wet case, gum, sun lotion-another.. idea for you) all I need is a cup holder now bahaha...happy kayaking!

i added a short piece of bungee on the pad eyes front and back, with stainless pulleys from home depot (cheap and awesome) rather than run anchor chord thru the pad eyes. it acts as a shock absorber for choppy conditions and puts less stress on the pad eyes. also, i use stainless steel pad eyes from Austin kayak and canoe ( they also have pulleys and tons of great accessories) because i've snapped several nylon ones. do it right, do it once!

Rick Barraza sorry I’ve had a lot of changes in my life over the last couple years and finding time to make videos had been tough. The anchor trolley is all based on current and wind. Did you use a sealing for all those holes you drilled? I would think water would get into the holes
@MotoAtheist
@MotoAtheist 7 жыл бұрын
The side holes, yeah, probably best to use some kind of sealant. The ones on top, the only time it would matter is if drilling in to a location that has no access hatch. You also won't get much water, if any, in a regular flatwater lake type situation anyway.

No, used a rubber washer, been using the yak for 5 years or so and never had a single leak.

The anchor trolley system was it one hole system or did u buy two different systems I definitely want to do this to a kayak I’m going to buy this week but I want 2 on each side
@FishingPOV
@FishingPOV 5 жыл бұрын
FISHING OUTDOORS I just bought the materials separately. And the reason why I use two one in front and one in back was when I used a single one the length of the bought it would always slip up over the cockpit or under the bought because of the shape of the yak. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

First off, I appreciate your very informative video. Question: Should you use some silicone caulk to seal out water under the rod holders? Seems like water could get between the kayak deck and rod holder.
@FishingPOV
@FishingPOV Жыл бұрын
I’ve never had an issue with water in that spot, if it was a sit on top I would use silicone but since it’s a sit in and the most water I take on is from the big open space where the seats at, it’s not a worry of mine. Thanks for watching.

Just look at the location and think : it's on the top right next to the OPEN cockpit.

Love the video. I am in the process of doing the same to my kayak. I want to put an anchor cleat in a similar position as shown in this video. However my kayak does not allow me to have access to the under side of the kayak, meaning I cannot place a washer and a nut on the backside to ensure the cleat stays on. Any suggestions on where or how I could attach my anchor cleat?
@FishingPOV
@FishingPOV 7 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one without seeing the yak. But some guys use rivets but I'm not sure if they would fit down the cleat screw holes. there are also different styles of cleats out there as well. What ever you use, if you have a sit on top kayak be sure to use a sealant of some sort to insure no water gets in.

You can use well nuts to mount accessories if you don't have access to the inside

Instead of using electrical tape on the anchor trolley knot ends... snip the paracord back so there is about a 1/4 inch of tag end left. Use a lighter to melt the tag end back and while it's molten use the rounded shaft of a screwdriver or something similar to drive the molten paracord into the last knot. Very secure way to lock in that last knot by because the end melts and becomes one with the knot.

I wish I were brave enough to start drilling and sawing into my kayak so I could do some cool mods. Great video! I did have to replace some eyelets on my kayak. I used marine sealant from our local Ace Hardware on the eyelets on the inside of my yak. Yeah, it's a sit-in and invasive water in the cockpit is unavoidable, but, I felt better inside by covering the bolts w/ marine sealant. Guess I'm OCD like that! LOL

I was thinking of doing similar to my sit on top. Did screws hold up, I planned to silicone them to deck and use expanding inserts to hold screw in at minimum... Any update would be cool...?

I was looking for best budget kayak and ran across this killer video. Got to be honest I thought it was just gonna be a hack job but these are great modifications! Would you recommend using silicone to seal up all those holes for the screws? And hows the boat holding up?

i get the handles & rod holders. but what is the string on the side of the boat do/for ? for those of you that say seal the holes. you will get more water in the boat, from water dripping off the paddle , then all the screw holes. didn't see any below water line. what about the big hole your sitting in ? ... just sayin' :-)
@FishingPOV
@FishingPOV 6 жыл бұрын
1Reddogroad the string on the side is a anchor trolley system. Helps anchor the boat from front or back to adjust to the wind. And you are correct about the water and paddle thanks for watching.

Watch scraping flesh off on the screws. Put some gas line or vacuum line on the exposed thread. Not sure if they are exposed, but that would suck to slice an arm or leg, specially if wet.
