Poor pH, high deer density, drought? Plant this in your food plots

Want something in your food plots that can handle drought stress, grazing pressure, low soil fertility, and poor pH?
Durana perennial white clover helps maximize body and antler growth of whitetail bucks and optimize milk production for nursing does. As a legume, it captures nitrogen reducing the need for commercial nitrogen purchases while building organic matter and improving soil.
Duaran's adaptability and toughness make you a better food plot planter. Now is a perfect time to plant it. Mix it with cereal grains in a fall planting and be prepared for a lush green carpet that'll become a preferred food source for your deer starting next spring.

My neighbor told me I was the first person he'd ever seen try and promote clover in their yard. Now it's only out back along the field that I do it but everything loves clover. Another one of my neighbors thanked me because he has bees and the amount of bees you see in clover all year is amazing if you are a honey farmer. Plus the clover does really well with the soybeans since the deer mow the beans down while giving the clover a chance to get big leaves on it.

First, I like Durana and have planted it in food plots for several years. It's my clover of choice too. That said, it is over hyped in this and nearly every other video. Most of them sound like commercials rather than an objective assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of Durana. There is no miracle clover that can do all the things stated in this video in all situations. Your mileage WILL vary with Durana, Patriot, or any other clover. Durana is highly preferred by deer; that's a fact. So if you plant it, then be prepared for it to be hit hard by as many deer as are in the area. Most of my plots have multiple deer hitting my Durana each and every night. One single deer needs about 3,000 pounds of forage in a year. Roughly speaking, one acre of Durana will produce that much forage. But if you have a dozen deer trying to feed on a two or three acre plot of Durana, they will most likely wipe it completely out within three years or less. My experience is that for a pure Durana stand, you need to plat about 1 acre for every 2 deer in your area. Anything less and you won't get the hyped performance claims of Durana being able to stand heavy deer pressure. Simply put, it can't because deer will literally eat it down so close to the ground that it cannot survive. Then too, in Mississippi where I am, droughts are the standard fare for nearly every summer. Some of them are three to four months long with less than 2 inches or so of rain PLUS heat index temperatures up to 110 degrees. Durana cannot handle that very well at all. It needs several inches of rain to survive. High temps and prolonged drought will kill it. So will Army worms. We get a lot of them in the south each fall and they hit Durana hard. Clover, including Durana, is also susceptible to diseases and my clover suffered greatly a year ago when it was hit first by drought, then by army worms, and finally by disease. As good as it is claimed to be, it isn't guaranteed to thrive and survive. It will do so ONLY if conditions are favorable, just like any other clover. If some or all the above, or other things not mentioned, hit your Durana, you may lose nearly all of it by the second year as I did. When it fails that quick and you don't get the multiple years of growth that is so widely hyped, then you have paid an excessive price for a fancy clover that failed. In my opinion, Durana should be planted in a fall mix with cereal grains or other crops. It will grow some during the fall and be sheltered from a lot of deer pressure by the other crops. It will produce a lot of clover the following spring. But if any of the things happen that I mentioned, including the deer finding it, you may not have much left by the following fall when you really want to hunt over it. Clover is essentially a spring and summer food source for deer, not a fall and winter food source. There are many other heavy producing forage sources that provide just as much nutrition for deer in the spring and summer months as Durana but which cost less. Consider what you plant carefully and evaluate the cost. Durana may be right for some situations and not so good for others. It is, BTW, a crop that grows well in partial shade so it can be good in a deep woods food plot or on a log road or right of way. PS. Turkeys love it too! Just my 2 cents; feel free to differ.

Thank you for your 2 cents. It's nice to see an opposing opinion thats not two sentences long but rather an article of personal experience and facts. We need more of this in the money driven world of hunting. 👍

In the north, I see it as a waste of money. I much rather plant Ladino, Red and a little Dutch White clover all in the same field, along with some chicory. It's a spring and summer food that mostly helps does and fawns. By the time deer season rolls around, it's done till next year.

@@morrismonet3554 You make an excellent point. The conditions which favor Durana are best in the South. Just not a good use of expensive clover seed in a climate where the weather in the fall is going to kill it off.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! This is precisely the sort of posts we all need to see more of. I’m so sick of watching videos of yankee deer hunters selling the idea that what works up north in Michigan works everywhere. Deer herds differ by region in what they eat, their characteristics and their habitat preferences, etc. There is no such thing as one size glove fits all. I’m all about helping the deer with nutrition outside of hunting season but call a spade a spade. Clover is not a reliable fall/winter season primary food source. Great in the late spring but dormant during hunting season. At least in MS. Next they’ll be promoting dandelions for fall/winter plots.

I remember 20 years ago when there was white, ladino & alsike & u hoped that one of them would take off. I always had some volunteer yellow clover on the property that seemed to be tall & grow well in the lawn. Today there is much better options. But a larger clover area planted with an annual dwarf rape to help that clover get established worked well for me. That year two clover was good & only got better the following years. I like to do a no-till for my annuals & my high clover areas get some seed broadcasted into them when the upcoming conditions look right. Clover always seems to recover after it gets nipped off if the sun/shade ratio is right.

I have clover for 5 years. I just over seeded this spring. Early is better. Even frozen. 2lb per acre. But I always over do it. Lime every year (just a little). 101010 also. Control weeds. It will last a long time.

I typically have to double that number. ^^ I only have 1 acre plots, But there is zero ag or other planted food sources for these deer, and they find my plots and hit them hard. Every one literally looks like it is a manicured yard, all year around. I doubled my seeding this year and it is still eaten down, but there are no bald spots, from where they either trampled it or ate it all up. Just my 2 cents, I know everyone's situation is different.

Hey I am a fellow KZfaq creator and have found out that someone is reposting your videos on Real.Video as their own. They have stolen my videos as well and others too. Go to real.video and search for a channel called shtfprepping101 and you will see your videos. I have already filed copyright claims on mine - we need to get that guy shut down!
