Welcome to the CL Pet Ads where we will evaluate care shown in these ads and discuss with you the good and bad pet husbandry. We will bring up valuable points, what works for the pet, mention what could be improved and discuss a species needs. The focus in these new videos will be about educating instead of reactions to encourage the viewer on learning more about the pet and to showcase #ThinkAdoptionFirst. Not everyone will bring their small companion to a shelter or rescue. Many choose to list still on Craigslist. There are hardly any rescues or foster homes for small pets like hamsters, so maybe you'd like to help out your small pet community after seeing this video? Who knows, maybe you'll make a different in the lives of pets and people.

Important information: While mentioning i would let you guys help me on a few ads as i have not handled the species of animal in awhile, i breezed on through two rehomed ads i found that day about snakes. While my main focus is on tank enrichment and size, i forgot about some important KEY elements and that's why i am glad i have you guys. Please understand you know where my specialty lies, in small rodents. While reptiles came after as snakes i handled less often but of course handled BP and BOAS as they were the most common in the pet trade. There are many different snake species out there and tho i wasn't paying attention about the "Boa" ad, my brain said to myself "Something isn't right about this" and now i realized thanks to you guys, you're amazing! I appreciate everyone coming together to inform me what's wrong with the ad. One ad i totally looked over the carpet the snake was on, the missing gauges, misinformation on species, etc. I ended up adding these two to the video to give people a variety but as i'll try to always say in the video, i may require your help to further make inputs about their care since i assure you i'll have brain farts or i breeze too quickly without thinking. It's been almost a year since i last took care of some of these animals, so i'm glad we can all come together about care. If the care is minimum in ads, it should be fine but of course if there is something that can be improved because of safety/health, let's all grow and learn together. Thank you Munchkins for being awesome!

When it comes to snakes it's umportant to not have too small an enclosure, but also not have one too big, because if they have empty space they will just not use it. from what I know, best size for an enclosure is to have one side as long, or almost as long as the snake, and the other side a bit over 2/3 of the snake's lenght. An anclosure can be bigger than this, but then the empty space should be filled with hides and enrichment, snakes usually do not like to stay in the open, they like to stick to their safe, known hide and only go out to feed. The yourtube channel Snakes Discovery is really good for learning about snakes! They present clear information, are easy to understand, and their videos are really well structured. They have videos that cover everything about snake care from what their living space needs to be, feeding, to how breeding snakes work etc... and have multiple species in their care. Their yearly baby hatching videos are really fun too

Also as far as feeders, most vets don’t recommend feeding live. Some of the mice and rats will actually attack the snakes before they are eaten. It’s just smarter to buy frozen
@sinandcyanide7505
@sinandcyanide7505 4 жыл бұрын
You're also more likely to deal with parasites if you feed live, and it's really inconvenient. You either have to buy something every time you're feeding or breed your own, which is only a viable option if you have a lot of animals to feed. If your animal won't eat the live food, you're also stuck caring for it and it'll grow faster than your animals food capacity grows.

As a reptile owner I see a few issues with the “boa” ad: 1. That is not a boa, that is a ball python, also proven by the fact that the Mojave morph is only seen in ball pythons. If you do not know the species how can you care for it? 2. I’m not sure if they have a thermostat or not but as it wasn’t listed in the description probably not - without this it burns your snake. 3. There need to be a hide on each end to create a hot hide and a cool hide so the snake can choose and thermoregulate. 4. This is getting more picky but there should really be fake plants and foliage to make the snake feel safe and not in the open. also munchie if you read this you pronounce Mojave as mo-har-vay. Made me laugh when you said it as mojav 😂

@morganthurston7975
@morganthurston7975 4 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too 😂 I was like, that's not a boa! Also, Courtney, many ball pythons thrive in large cages, you just have to make sure they're properly furnished. My bp is in a 40 gallon right now, and is moving into a 150 gallon this summer and she will utilize every inch of that space. The "too big" cage excuse only applies to a small number of very nervous ball pythons or people trying to make excuses for not wanting to get a bigger cage. Times are changing for ball python care (for the better) and recommending small cages is very outdated.

The Mojave "boa" is actually a ball python. Ball pythons require alot of decorations in order to feel secure. They also require a hot and cold hide. The ball also looks really small to be 4 years old. The carpet python also needs more decorations/things to climb on and a cool hide. The gravel substrate is sharp and could cause compaction if ingested. The carpet python also looks a little on the thin side.

If the neglect is seen as an abuse case, it is prioritized as a Class A crime (meaning it is on the same level as murder). However, this is usually just for Dogs, Cats, and Horses, among most other larger pets, exotics, or farm animals, like Cows and Pigs. The government doesn't usually pay much attention to smaller pets, unfortunately, like Hamsters, Rats, and Fish, among many others, though I can't say whether this applies to them or not...hopefully, it does, as smaller animals deserve just as much attention as larger animals, but I, unfortunately, somewhat doubt they'll pay attention to the smaller animals :(

What's sad and shocking is most non educated glider owners think that cage is perfect. I just recently rescued a SINGLE male sugar glider in that exact same cage. I got a call from the animal shelter cause they had no clue what to do with him, and the zoo wouldn't take him. He's 7 years old and has had TEN OWNERS...ten...owners...he was sold and given back to his original owner multiple times, and that man was...not right in the head. The last person to buy him brought him to the shelter because he was bitten so bad that he had to go to the hospital. This poor thing was being fed, and bare with me now, tortillas...every 12 hours...he was so over weight. His last owner bought a 12 inch wheel to try and help. This poor thing had no treats, food, water, toys, or hides...they put a paiir of pants in there for him to hide in. Sadly we can't handle him yet, because he's so scared of being picked up, but he holds my hand while eating yogurt and bananas, and he's lost so much weight being on a proper diet. He refuses to move cages because he's been in the small one for so long, so we really don't know if he even knows how to glide. Seeing that post just made me wanna cry and I just wanted to share my Gillian's story. He's doing a lot better now, and has a new cage for when he's ready.

One thing is almost never try to re-home an animal to a zoo usually they have very very strict rules (if they're reputable) where they get their animals from and if they're rescues they must come from trusted people like DNR rehab animals or herpitolgical societies. I work at a zoo and we also usually just don't got the space of sometimes permits or expertise

Right. I have four sows and a 21sq. ft. cage. Aspen shavings are bad for pigs, every store bought cage is bad for pigs, and cramming their cage with ramps and toys is also bad. They need space to run. There’s not only no space for three pigs (when I had three I had a 2x4 c&c and a 2x2 c&c in an L shape) but there’s so much stuff in the way they can’t even run in the space they have. The 'Boa' from its tail that was visible in the hide looks nothing like a boa... I strongly believe the species is wrong. ALSO both of the snake enclosures where not good. A snake needs minimum 2 hides in an enclosure. Having one is not enough at all. Covering the mesh top with cardboard is ineffective, it gets soggy and is good for bacteria breeding. cooking foil is much better for that purpose. Those enclosures where extremely sad. The snakes don't have enough clutter, hides and for the 'boa' climbing enrichment. I love snakes and pretty much any other animal. I own a snake and wish to get another one some time soon, hence its very sad to see those enclosures... No matter what pet you have, research is the most important thing you can do before getting the animal....

As a sugar glider owner,I shutter at the thought of people buying from these people namely pocket pets. This made me go give my little babies kissed and pets (I have six and love them very much). Not to mention the fact that gliders bond to one specific person, and can get extremely aggressive if they are moved to a new environment without knowing any of the sents.

Oh dear god. Both of these guineapig-ads just outright broke my heart. Like.. at least both ads were with multiple piggies, so they didn't have to be alone... but these cages are so darn small. I know you mentioned the space-requirement already and I'm glad about it! My pet-carrier (from Amazon for Cats - used for up to two guinea pigs) feels bigger than that second cage and might even be bigger! ;w; And that first ad.. all three piggies looked so small. People shouldn't house baby piggies without an adult, they'd feel so much safer around adult piggies! I just recently added a new baby girl to my herd of now again four piggies, after my oldest girl passed in March. Got little Freya from a breeder at age 4 weeks, she's close to 5 months old now, and she's so goddamn confident and tame already, mainly because my 3 adult piggies taught her that us humans are good & human hands often bring food. She tries to bite into my shoes while I clean their enclosure.. could be food after all, right? xD (My four piggies, a neutered male Batman and his three girls Muffin, Kalista Kartoffel and Freya, live in an enclosure build out of songmics-shelve-tiles, similar to the C&C-system, but without grids - it's like.. half transparent, but solid "plastic-walls" I th ink?; the whole enclosure is around 3.2 square metres big; which would be ~35 square feet if the converter I used is correct. I'm from Germany, and this cage size is about "normal" here with people that educated themselves about the animal they were getting beforehand. The bigger the better, but sometimes your flat just isn't big enough, or your family might still need some space as well, so you gotta compromize... Way too small pet store cages are a thing here as well. They might not be as shoebox-tiny as elsewhere, but theres many non-appropriate items being sold and used but uneducated people.)

Overs here in the UK it is illegal to live feed and will be prosecuted, which is excellent. What I hate most is people think it is funny to film videos of their snakes ripping apart live pinkie, hamsters, rats, mice and other tiny animals just for views and entertainment. You tube should ban videos like that as it is sick and disgusting. No animal should be killed in such a way and you can hear the kids in some videos laughing at the poor rodents screaming. I am dead against live feeding and glad it is banned here. This is a very sore subject with me. Great vid as usual. 👍

When the boa add came up I immediately looked at the pattern on the snake and was like “wait... is that a ball python?” Really sad that the craigslist seller doesn’t even know what kind of snake they have. For a ball python I wouldn’t worry as much about climbing, but the substrate, lack of clutter and overall setup is very poor. He needs two hides (one on the warm side and one on the cool side) and plenty of plants and cover to hide in. Ball pythons are like mice, if you think it’s already cluttered add even more. Someone in another comment said the ball python looks a little thin. He probably frequently goes off food due to the bad husbandry. Also ball pythons don’t require lighting (they can have it, but they don’t need it). And in a barren set up like this, it’ll only add to the stress

Hello so I own 2 guinea pigs and will talk about it. Firstly they have 3 guinea pigs that’s good because they are social and part animals. Aspen bedding is not very good with their respiratory system because it has a lot of dust. The second one the cage is way to small the minimum is 7.5 sq ft. There is to much stuff in the cage. They can have c and c cages or Midwest cages are a great option. The pellets are not good they do not eat seeds and seeds are bad for them. Also I didn’t see any hay in the cage and guinea pigs need hay 24/7.

26:25 I actually own this cage for my Syrian girl. Personally, I don't think it's that bad, I've removed the lower shelf and can add in tonnes of bedding for burrowing. I also have several access points to the shelf other than the ramps and added railings so my hamster can't fall off easily. It is over 800 square inches too. I wouldn't buy it again because it doesn't construct particularly well and is difficult to move but other than that I have no issues. I get that the setup here is bad but when done right this is a good cage.

The first snake was not a boa its a ball python just saying lol. N ball pythons don't climb in captivity and or the wild, but does need some more clutter to help snake feel secure. Very minimalistic but its still a good set up. N the last carpet python should have had more branches because they do a lot of their time climbing. So I would say this one needs improvement but overall is still a good minimalistic set up though. So yeah both seemed okay to me other then the one was a ball python not a boa.

Everyone else seems to have already touched on what I thought, but I did want to mention that ball pythons (the "boa" lol) are a terrestrial species. They're extremely clumsy so actually shouldn't have things to climb on as they are likely to fall. A better choice is lots of fake plants and fun hides. A branch on the ground or very low to the ground is also fine, as long as it's extremely sturdy and isn't more than a few inches from the cage floor.

Most sugar glider owners won’t offer chew toys but they need noisy toys but the cage is gross as heck, pellets are not recommended, there are staple diets, getting the premade hpw is frowned upon by most vets, they need fresh fruits and veggies, with the correct calcium to phosphorus ratio. The wheels are miserable, sugar gliders cannot be in a wheel that has a bar in the middle it will cause back breaking and tails being ripped off

The vet said he probably fell and injured his back; his hind legs didn’t work properly. The “little guy” they adopted from me bonded with him and they became best buddies. I think it was 3 years later I was contacted and they let me know that the disabled boy had died, and the one they got from me didn’t even make it 5 days. They gave me all the stuff for my rescue.

Only reason I see if the snake is on a hunger strike or a hatchling than has refused f/t as first meal, and just to jump start their system. Then after that transition to f/t asap. I get that some snakes won't take f/t if brought up on live but I really can't understand why people allow their snake to develop a taste, especially with boas and pythons that are notoriously stubborn and routine bound. Colubrids are trashcans, no excuse to offer live ever And btw, that feeders looked terribly thin and scruffy.. If I'd see them in frozen form I would have bought them, they don't look healthy and my snake health depends on the health of his food. I'd rather spend double for f/t rats with a lush, shiny coat, plump and without injuries or deformities I suppose you are talking about live prey meaning mammals but a lot of reptiles are insectivores and sight oriented so feeding f/t might not be a good idea because you really should gutload feeders before offering and some animals are just not receptive to immobile food (not a reptile but frogs and toads won't eat dead insects, they wouldn't actually see it as food amd try to eat it if it's not moving)

I think its neat that you touch on adoption ads for other small mammals, too. While hamsters and gerbils usually get the brunt of bad treatment, I see a lot of awful enclosures and "cages" for rabbits, ferrets, and guinea pigs as well. I own a rabbit so I often find myself looking around on Craigslist just out of curiosity for rabbit hutches and such. The amount of times I've seen guinea pigs housed in the same enclosure as rabbits is kind of shocking. Not to mention those awful, cramped cages sold by Kaytee for rabbits and guinea pigs OR hutches with barred flooring. Rabbits can get bumble foot too, and walking on grating like that all the time would be highly uncomfortable. Those cages are fine for travel or something of the sort (personally I use a cat carrier for my bunny's vet visits), but to think of a bunny having to live her whole life in one of those things makes me real sad. My own rabbit is free roam except at night, and even then her enclosure has plenty of space for her.

Im sorry, the song at the beginning killed me. Anyways, I have a pets craigslist story for everyone! I currently have a 6 year old Black Merle Purebred female Chihuahua. A few years ago I was searching for a small dog to train as a PTSD service dog off of craigslist but I ran across an ad of 6 newborn puppies being sold. Strike 1. The original owner had a photo of the mother, she was in a TINY cage and seemingly no food and water as well as a really old looking blanket COVERED in waste. She wasnt for sale but she was used as a breeder. After 4 days of begging the owners, instead of buying their $500+ dollar pups, They let me buy the mother for $50. When we got her, the second I reached out to her, she coiled back in fear. Took a few days and she started following me EVERYWHERE, she'd even jump into the shower with me because she didnt want to be left alone. However, she wouldn't let us hold ANY object near her and every night shed have dreams where she'd squirm and cry and would wake up screaming at the top of her lungs. Took her a few months to allow my brother to touch her as she mainly feared men. It's been 2 or 3 years and shes had a litter of 2 pups with my sisters dog (Not purposeful) but shes happy and healthy and got to keep all her puppies (Only 2). She still has nightmares and screams when you hold a broom or stick near her but she does help me with my PTSD as I help her with her previous abuse. Just a bit of a place to put this, sorry that it's long.

I'm kinda happy rabbits weren't mentioned here, only because people tend to lump rabbits in the small animal/rodent category... And taking away the fact that they're not rodents at all, but just like guinea pigs, they need ALOT of space, so much so that when i rescued my 2, they're starting to tell people that they need their own room, or to freeroam them, no cages at all (pretty sure that's just be the rescue I went to though). So putting an animal with the spacial needs of possibly up to an entire house and leaving them in a cage is proof that they shouldnt be lumped in with the "small animal" category, they really should be placed in the same pet category as cats and dogs (that's strictly opinionated though). And another little side note to prove about the amount of space rabbits need, in the UK at least, the reason you don't see rabbits in small pet shops anymore (excluding big shops like pets at home) is because the bare minimum, according to the house rabbit society, is 8 square feet... A bit bigger that what you tend to see for usable showcase space in small petshops... Sorry, mini rant/informative speech over 😅

The mama mouse with her babies made me sad. With rodents I understand it can be difficult to keep 100% clean but as someone who has had mice they’re really not that difficult as long as you understand what they need. They need a clean environment, dust-free bedding for burrowing, toys, space, proper food, etc. spot cleaning for small animals is important. If you aren’t prepared for baby mice don’t breed them! You could easily end up with many sick animals you aren’t prepared for. It’s so frustrating people don’t do their research. There’s plenty of websites and videos that go over small animal care. I hope all those sweet babies find good homes!

I've never kept sugar gliders, but that just looks bad from the photos. Looks small and dirty :(

This part really upsets me I have 8 guinea pigs of my own in great care and are really healthy and just seeing how they are treating these pigs makes me want to take all 3 and bring them here for a better life. 23:37

that robo at minute 11 is such a cute little thing and as someone who wants to own robos and is not able because they aren't available in my country, it breaks my heart to see people give them such a horibble care
