I know this is late, but it is as others have said, Augmented Reality, or AR (Think of Pokemon GO). I was actually there in Korea for this tournament and got to witness it all live. It. Was. AMAZING.

It's not projectors. It's Augmented Reality. On the large screens on the sides, the people can see the CGI characters. Center screen has the music video.

For the record, the CGI characters are from League of Legends; Soyeon voices Akali, Miyeon is Ahri (as others have mentioned; she's a fox, not a cat), Madison is Evelynn, and Jaira is Kai'Sa (it amused me seeing you referring to both the singers and the characters by the singers' names...XD ). The characters you didn't recognise in the countdown were the same four; it showed their existing skins in the game being replaced with the new popstar skins, which the song was released to promote. So at 8 was Kai'sa's old skin, 7 was her new one. 6 and 5 were both Akali, 4 and 3 were Evelynn, and 2 and 1 were Ahri.

Anyway, other characters that shown in the beginning (on the countdown screen) were actually the previous character skins and their new skins (which introduced in K/DA).
