• Pop-Up Cabin
My dad and I challenged ourselves to design and construct a portable cabin that is: easy to build, easy to transport, and fairly cheap to build. This is the result! In this episode, we build the cabin and add transparent PVC roofing panels to it. Perfect for stargazing!
The clear roofing isn't just for looks and lighting though, it can also be used for heating during the winter! Much in the same way that a greenhouse passively heats itself using sunlight. So cool! Throw in some led string lights, and it looks like hundreds of fireflies have come to rest on the cabin roof. (*Editor's note: Yeah, I realize that I kept calling it plexiglass roofing. ...Silly me. lol It's actually PVC roofing panels. ...just FYI)

When I was about 6, my dad and his father built a cottage in the Kawartha's for us. (a good 40 years ago). The first thing he built was a temproary shelter for my Mom and sisters and I. It started as a platform up off the ground (it was for summer use). At first there was a tent on it, but then later he put up a little cabin. It was about twice the size of this, but with no winter features at all. We spent a fair amount more time on bug proofing it... We used it as children as a 'bunkie' for many, many years. This brings back amazing memories. Thanks for the smile.

EDIT: The pop up cabin is finished! Here is a video is you want to see it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hseeja17sNucn3k.html Thank you for the inspiration and videos! As soon as I saw the first pop up cabin video, i wanted to build one. I am 13 years old and my dad and I picked out a really nice spot on top of a mountain. So we bought the plans and started building. It is not going to be built in a single day because we are going to try to spend the least amount of money as possible. So we are using most natural resources. As I am commenting this I am camping on the floor of the cabin. It has no walls or roof but we hope to get it done before my birthday in October. I want to say THANK YOU for the idea and you inspired me to build a pop up cabin of my own. I love your work! Great job!

Hey there. This is my son's comment. Here's a pic of him and his brother standing on the base before we screwed down the floor boards. You can search the the pics from my facebook page to see other progress photos. I got a chainsaw mill and beam cutter and we've got all our boards cut up and cured. A Wild Cherry tree that fell this February has given us some beautiful free wood. We're coating it in Borate (bug stuff) then a coat of boiled linseed oil to seal the wood. So it's a slow process but it'll be totally worth it when it's done! facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10158649006634594&set=a.10150129747239594&type=3&notif_id=1599423723877651&notif_t=feedback_reaction_generic&ref=notif

Your cabin is going to be gorgeous! You've done a great job so far. Looks like you found yourself a fine patch of woodland out there as well. I especially have to commend you Paul, on your parenting. It's obvious that you are a good father who loves his boys. Through sharing this project with them, you are investing in their: skills, knowledge, and confidence. They will remember this little cabin project for the rest of their lives. You're not just building a cabin sir, you're building up your boys into: confident, capable, and courageous young men. All the best to you and your family.

@@davekimbler2308 I don't know exacty how much it has cost us so far but I know it is not much. The wood that we are using is from wood around our land so that made it really cheap to build. We are going to build multiple cabins too. I can tell you that it still won't cost you much even if you buy wood for it but I can't give you an exact amount. If I can figure this out I will tell you.

yea nice idea, if folks are willing to pay for the shipping costs. I use to long haul, the only issue is that it wouldnt be a nice compact package, so the shipping rate would be a little higher then your standard skid , yet it is doable, For me if he was able to keep it around the 5 grand or a tad under including shipping out to the loony left coast of BC, it would be worth it for me. But I purchased the plans so hoping to get the land bought before the snow flies.

This is true. I think I commented the same when the original pop up cabin was posted a year ago. In case anyone was wondering, I recently put this cabin up (from his plans). I made mine a little bigger tho, 12x12. The total cost on the material ground up was $1800 between framing, foundation blocks, and having a mill cut me 12" wide hemlock planks.

I love it. I think you can get some type of greenhouse roof panels with shades or blinds for summer usage, if desired. There are a ton of conservatory type roofing ideas, since garden rooms are becoming very popular in homes now. Maybe some sort of screen soffit situation would keep the bugs out? A wavy piece of wood that fits into the panel with a straight piece of screening stapled to it? But, those are probably an upgrade type situations as far as kits might be involved. I love it and I loved the tour. That is so nice that you've made something for everyone else to enjoy, too. :)

This continues to be amazing! Incredible as built, then the mind races with all the options and additions that one could make. Thoughts on the roof. If you only paneled one half in Plexiglas and made the other half solid, you could orient the Plexi side to the north. You'd then have a north-light workspace which any artist or photographer will tell you is ideal! It also would help cut down on the solar gain. I bet you'll be surprised at how much it heats up, even on cloudy days. That wood stove might not get much use this winter!

My Uncle had one of those Massey Ferguson's (it was the first vehicle I ever drove), he died this month and it took his coffin to the graveyard. So amazing to see them still running, really miss him, he was a great role model.

Very cool. I bet as a child you built some cool winter indoor forts using pillow,s blankets, chairs and couch cushions.

I love this little cabin too. Something like this might be more in my budget. I just want a place to go outside and play in the winter months. You could get some screen door screen. You can get it in usually about a 36inch by 72 inch roll at most hardware stores. If you staple it in those spaces that might let bugs in, it would be an easy use and remove when you move the little cabin again. The screen is easy to cut with scissors. I used some of it to make an indoor plant area where my cats cannot get to the plants*, but I can still see the plants. I was amazed at how easy it was to work with. The kind I got wasn't metal. It was some sort of synthetic, almost like nylon, but it wasn't nylon. I'm allergic to nylon. Not sure what synthetic it was, but I noticed no smell or problems with it. *It was a cayenne pepper plant. I didn't want them to get burned when the peppers grew. I learned the hard way how to handle cayenne when it is ready to pick, mainly how to wash my hands before I accidentally rub my eyes.

1. UV from the sun makes the clear plastic brittle and surprisingly weak over time. The third year, my clear porch roof was pretty much destroyed by hail only one inch / 25mm across. As you mentioned, in some areas falling branches could also be an issue. 2. To reduce overheating in the summer, you could probably swap the plastic window for a screen. Best wishes, and keep making the entertaining and informative videos.

Amazing! Love the changes to this version. The whole time I was thinking about how nice it would be the put two of these together to form a longer, two room winter cabin, each room sharing the middle wall. That way the cabin can not only sleep more people but also have a defined living space while reserving an entire room for sleeping. I don’t use SquareSpace but I do commend them for helping keep the channel alive. Awesome!

Excellent idea Mark. They could have two tractors and then the wife and daughter could come. Grandpa would drive the other unit. Perhaps some tractor company could donate a tractor for them. I would donate towards a second tractor! Only thing missing is a family dog

I absolutely love this! You and your Dad did such a great job! One thing you might want to consider is fading of anything inside the cabin from the suns rays during the day. I had a portable storage unit set up in front of my house during a renovation, and it had a translucent plastic roof. The reno only took three months, but when it was done many of my items were permanently damaged by fading.

The one issue I can see with the open gables is critters getting in and messing up things. Mice, squirrels and even pine martens could be a problem. Nice job!

Yup that's definitely a possibility. It would be wise to at least screen over the openings. I packed up most of the bedding when I left though. So hopefully there isn't anything left of value in there for the critters to feel that they can make a home out of.

Hi, I have used these transparent sheets and have found two problems. There is a lot of condensation taking place under the sheets and a lot of dripping water on the floor etc. as well the plastic does not stand up to UV light and goes brittle very quickly. The one good thing in its favour is that it is relatively cheap. I have replaced it with Laserlite 2000 Twinwall 6mm which is a high quality, multiwall polycarbonate glazing sheet that is lightweight, strong and has outstanding light transmission and thermal insulation properties. It is UV protected and carries a 15 year warranty. It is available in 610mm and 1220mm wide and up to 5800mm in length. I am only recommending this as a satisfied customer and am not sure if you have this product in your part of the world
