How to make pop-ups which turn as the base is opened. Very useful for adding some extra intrigue to a pop-up spread.

thank you again Duncan... I can't tell how much I enjoy doing pop-ups with my son. I totally appreciate your book and these on-line tutorials. The templates of your CAR pg. 170 is also an excellent working example of this technique that I personally have used and admired. Thanks again and looking forward to your next book, cheers, Stu

I love this series and I'm working my way through all of them. This one was less clear, though. How is the wheel secured to the L-piece? Just at the centre, along one leg of the L, or what?
@Semeleification
@Semeleification 2 жыл бұрын
Ah! Along the lower leg of the L-shape. Also, don't forget to crease the L. Got it!

I took a paper engineering class in college and my professor used work with Sabuda, and she helped make the Christmas book. I remember going over the rotating mechanisms in the book with her. I'm trying to imitate the multiple rotating circles that the book has, but I want to conceal the mechanism completely like with the Red Riding Hood book. Do you have any suggestions as to how to do that? My mechanism often crashes when I try because there's no proper room for movement.
@thepop-upchannel4919
@thepop-upchannel4919 7 жыл бұрын
Start with the basic parallelogram with the added little "L" shaped piece (2.00 in the tutorial). Then, before adding the turning wheel, add the "masking piece" - in essence this should be like the purple piece at 5.56 or the green piece at 6.43, but in this case it should be bigger (like the bed in "Little Red Riding Hood"). This "masking piece" has a hole in it which the "L" shaped piece rises up through. Before adding the rotating image make sure that as the spread opens and closes the arm of the "L" shaped piece can rotate without snagging or jamming. Finally, glue the rotating image to the arm of the "L". Hope this helps and it all works now.

It's really amazing!!! I like the action it creates. Is the mechanism under the white clock in "The Night Before Christmas" similar with the ones you introduced in tutorial 27 (pull strips)?
@thepop-upchannel4919
@thepop-upchannel4919 5 жыл бұрын
In "The Night Before Christmas" - the clock design on the left hand page is a very sophisticated combination of mechanisms - all the movement is generated by an Automatic Pull Strip (Tutorial 16) which is hidden under the ribbon at the bottom of the page - the clock hand is moved by the type of mechanism explained in Tutorial 27 - the little mouse that turns its head over is based on the mechanism explained in Tutorial 42 (Pull Tabs Part 5). All the clocks on the right hand side of the page, under the flap, are based on the mechanism explained in Tutorial 24.
@sheiyo6638
@sheiyo6638 5 жыл бұрын
The Pop-Up Channel Thanks a lot for replying me. I was confused in the beginning since I thought there's no enough space behind the clock for a parallel fold plus a counter v-fold which you explained in this Tutorial 24. Therefore, although the clock hand is rotating as well, it must be done by different way. How a delicate design it is! Thanks again.😊

Can you explain how can I make the circle rotate in a certain degrees? I guess it’s relate to the fold on the parallelogram?
@thepop-upchannel4919
@thepop-upchannel4919 4 жыл бұрын
The amount that the circle rotates is determined by the angles of the little triangles that are folded into the corner of the parallelogram - usually this is 45 degrees, I've made one that will move around 60 degrees but after that the angle gets too acute. Maybe you could experiment.

I can't seem to be able to figure out how you are adding that second parallelogram. Mine bends all improperly.
@thepop-upchannel4919
@thepop-upchannel4919 2 жыл бұрын
If you've got the measurements right (Tutorial 5) then the problem could be because the card you're using is too flimsy - maybe making the bending piece double thickness would help.

Maybe tutorial 15. Or for something really easy you could use a V-Fold explained in Tutorial 2, but use the base as a background with the pop-up coming forward from it, cut the pop-up to the shape of two arms with hands on thhem.

WHAT PAPER IS? WHAT IS NAME OF PAPER ?
@thepop-upchannel4919
@thepop-upchannel4919 7 жыл бұрын
The best pop-ups are made using card not paper. The best card is as thin as possible and as rigid as possible. The bigger the design the more rigid the card needs to be. For a small design heavy Cartridge paper would be ok. For most of the tutorials I use the type of card used in photo copy machines - that is 160 gsm.. For big designs best would be about 220 gsm.
