Can we get Popcorn to Pop in Resin ? Today we are going try a few things to get this popcorn to actually pop in resin, well try anyway! 1) we are going to use a HOT Plate, because we need this resin hotter than hot. 2) we are going use lots of Resin, the more mass the better . Ben Works tried this one folks but he couldn't get them to pop so lets see what we can do !

You're such a character, Nick. At this point, I don't care what you make. Your fun personality is what makes your videos so enjoyable. God bless you and your family.

The resin would need to hit around 180 degrees in order to reach popcorn popping temp. But the unpopped vase looks good, you could try putting already popped corn into resin to see what that looks like when turned.

For this to work with the hot plate, you need a glass container, use the same amount of resin, but only use a quarter of the amount of popcorn, also add the popcorn as soon as you finish mixing the resin, then put it straight on the hot plate.

Watched this with my 2 young kids and had a 45+ minute discussion about reasons why this experiment ultimately failed with all of their theories and inputs. This was after thoroughly enjoying the jokes and waffling of the video. keep it up Nick. You and Ben are equally great. Thanks for the entertainment and the spark of art and science talk with the youngin's.

A quick search tells me that the temperature required to pop popcorn is 180C (355F). Another search says that resin can get that hot, so I think perhaps there were a few problems here. I think adding that much popcorn acted as a heat sink, so the overall temperature didn't get high enough because each one was absorbing the heat. Melting the bottom and needing to pour into a different cup also likely got rid of a lot of heat. The narrow, tall shape also meant that you're only going to heat the very bottom, the top layer isn't going to get anything from the heating element. If anyone were to try this again, I would suggest using a wider, flatter vessel and using less popcorn. I know Ben only did three kernels, but I think his problem might have been the pressure pot, the actual popping is the release of a lot of pressure so having the kernels under external pressure could prevent them from popping. There are also always kernels that just don't pop, so you need to have enough to ensure that you have good ones but not so many that they'll prevent others from popping.

Nick, popcorn expands around 15 to 20% when popped. If you had managed to get that much corn to pop, there would have been hot popcorn and resin all over the shop from the expansion. Try less corn.

Who would have ever thought plastic would melt on a hotplate? 😆 Perhaps pre-popping would be an interesting project?

What you really should have done was use glass for this experiment, rather than using the plastic containers. I also think you should do less popcorn kernels but keep the same amount of resin. On top of all that, it might be a good idea to stir the mixture around while it’s curing to see if you can get any different reactions.

Honestly I think the failures are just as good to show as the successes. You always put out good content Nick. I look forward to all your videos.

Man I just gotta tell ya, you put multiple smiles on my face every single time I watch you make whatever ! Just know you always make my day a bit brighter and love your channel. Speaking of which, your video production quality is second to none. The time you put into these little gems must be staggering and it shows. You just keep doing what your doing and you will be at the 1 million mark in no time! Oh got an idea for you. Pop the popcorn THEN put it in resin and make a twin to the unposed vase. IDK could be cool ! Thank You for always cheering me up and sharing your gifts with the world.

You learned that popcorn won't pop under those circumstances. That's not a failure. Knowledge gains is never waisted! Thank you for all cool, wacky things you share with us!

I remember Mythbusters did an episode based on the 'house full of popcorn' scene from the 1985 movie 'Real Genius'. They found that one of the problems, is that the lower layers of kernels are under pressure from the kernels above (and resin in this case), which prevents them from popping. I imagine this could also insulate the popcorn/resin combo from the heat plate, which might also be why it melted...

I don’t know how you motivate to get these things done ! It’s not just the trades you work in, it’s your extra projects, your filming, your editing and then you have the channel!! How do you not become overwhelmed? When I get overwhelmed, I just stop becoming productive. I freeze all projects. How do you keep yourself motivated?

Looked it up. Popcorn pops at 180 C. I would suggest using a Pyrex pot or oven bowl. It is designed to cook at high temperatures but will still give you the clear view. Also you can put it directly on the hot plate.

I was seeing that coming, when you said you were using that heater and wondering why you didn't use a metal container. But the end product is still cool! Keep up the good work!
