I was an extra in this movie. I’m in The subway scene when leo is talking to Martin sheen on the phone. I sat across from Leo. I worked as a dispatcher for the Boston Police at the time. We were all allowed to be in the movie. Martin Scorsese is an amazing director and a very nice guy. Once in a lifetime opportunity. That scene btw, took 8 hours to film

When Leo goes to Marilyn at her apartment and gives her the files, he says, "If something happens to me, you open this." Billy obviously told her to find Dignam and give him the information. That's how Wahlberg knew about Matt Damon and killed him at the end of the movie.

And if he had taken the tapes to the cops, Damon’s character could have still gotten off, he was the most slippery “rat” in the movie and always came up with an excuse. That was the “happy” ending where at least one good guy is left standing. Not a nice guy but a good guy.

Mark Wahlberg had said in an interview once that this film was one of the most enjoyable ones he got to be a part of. And I agree with him on this. The talent in this cast is truly amazing.

Jack Nicholson has a phase in the 90's and 2000's where he played in a lot of comedies. He was thrilled to play a villain again in this movie!

I truly miss seeing Jack Nicholson. It sucks that him and Gene Hackman retired from acting. They are still two of absolute best actors to ever grace the silver screen.

Wahlberg's character in this movie is one of my favorites. He's crass but 100% honest to Leo when they first meet. Probably the only one in the entire movie that was honest.

Few movie deaths are as upsetting as Bill Costigan’s in “The Departed.” Bill went through so much in this story. He was so brave and sacrificed so much for the good of others. We desperately want him to be safe and finally be able to rest (throughout the movie, Bill talks about how tired he is). And we want others to recognize him as a hero. So to see him killed in such an abrupt and unceremonious way provokes not just sadness but a bitter feeling of injustice. At his funeral, Bill is finally honored as a hero. As for his tiredness, I don’t think it’s an accident that we hear the priest say, “Eternal rest, grant unto him, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”

I think the best part of the ending is that you think Sullivan has gotten away with everything until Dignam just shows up when you least expect it. Leo’s death will forever be one of the most shocking deaths in any movie too, just comes out of nowhere

I think that even with Sullivan "getting away with it," he probably doesn't have much meaning left in his life. Costello is gone as well as his relationship and what he thinks is his child. He probably doesn't have any actual family left either, having been raised by his Grandmother. To me, Sullivan even looks a bit relieved when he sees Dignam(Diglet), knowing that he won't have to continue living a lie. Sullivan probably figured that Dignam knew the truth, and that it was only a matter of time. Maybe Dignam didn't care that much about Costigan, but he would never forgive for what happened to Queenan.

The ending is 100% satisfying for me. After Billy's surprising death, it was so shocking to see Sullivan won. But when Dignam killed Sullivan, its a reminder that just as injustice can take hold, retribution can too. Also, if you pay attention to what Dignam says to Billy, nearly everything comes true. Like, yeah in the end, Dignam was the only friend Billy had inside the State Troopers after Queenan's death.

Dignam was suspicious of Sullivan and didn't trust him. Considering that he got Queenan killed. So he knew that he would have to give up his badge to get rid of Sullivan.

The envelop from Costigan (Leo) that he gave Madolyn told her to contact Dingam (Whalberg) basically and that he would know what to do. That's what was in his final envelop. Because Costigan trusted Dingam even if he was an a hole, he was the only one left he truly trusted. And yes she was pregnant with Costigan's baby most likely :(

But what was the point of trying to bring him to the rooftop? And if he did come to the rooftop to arrest Colin but later got killed by Trooper Barrigan, then the envelope is meaningless.

@@osmanyousif7849 then he wouldn't have her send the envelop. She was only to send it if she didn't hear from Costigan in 2 weeks or he wound up dead. He tells Madolyn if something happens to him to send it. But he was still going to try and catch Colin himself of course. Dingam was just a back up plan. Because if Dingam gets involved its outside of the law pretty much since he's put on leave. But Costigan also doesn't want them getting away. It was just an insurance plan to track down his murderer and take care of the rat after his own death

@@CrazeeAdam , No... you're missing the point. My point was that I found Billy's plan to try and take down Colin just absurd. I mean, ask yourself this: You're an undercover cop who's been hunting down a mole for quite some time, causing you to suffer a lot of stress and trouble, BUT SUDDENLY, you're given a bountiful amount of clues or evidence to learn and proof the mole was right in front of you. Now do you: Option A - Immediately take said evidence to the police station so the mole can be outed as the traitor (maybe even playing a recording of them confessing their crimes to further humiliated them), and will be arrested. Option B - DON'T DO THAT. And do the dumbest things ever like.... 1. Leave a trail that tips the mole off that you know they're the mole. 2. Tell the mole to meet you at a rooftop, despite it risking the mole getting the upper hand on you. 3. Don't call for the whole cavalry to meet you there, let alone the people who can actually back you up. 4. Don't bring any of your evidence with you, LITERALLY. 5. Say you're gonna march him to the PD, despite not doing any of the 4 things I listed. Not to sound like a downer, but Billy's actions in the movie just make him look like an idiot. Now you can argue that credit due to the fact that The Departed did something better that Infernal Affairs (which it was adapting from) didn't, which was have Billy let someone know what could happen to him if Colin killed him. As in Infernal Affairs (SPOILERS), while Billy's counterpart Chan does call the police to let them know that he has the mole in custody, he doesn't actually give them a name, nor does he let someone know that in case s**t goes wrong, and he's killed, to let that person go and reveal what actually happened. But this is still frustrating, as The Departed does a poor job at showing the passage of time (which I'll explain that problem later...), so I was left to believed that all of the events happened the very next day. And here's where the problem lies. EVEN IF we the audience didn't know yet to what was in the envelope Billy gave to Madolyn, and we would assume he was gonna take down Colin at the rooftop, WHY couldn't Billy bring Dignam himself instead of having someone else do the job? The movie never give an explanation to why Billy doesn't, UNTIL AFTER. But what's the reason for not doing it BEFORE? Billy could have just called Dignam or go to his house, show him said-evidence he's got on Colin proving he's the mole. Even if Dignam resigned (Which is where the the movie's passage of time becomes a problem, as I couldn't tell if it's been two weeks that Dignam had finally resigned to put his papers in), Billy could just find or call Dignam, show the tapes and this mess would have never happened. And WHY didn't Trooper Brown bring Dignam? Did he try to find him and couldn't, or did Brown just say, "F**k it!" and came alone? And then comes the reveal that there was another mole, who happens to be Trooper Barrigan. Now I have my issues with this reveal somewhere else with why Barrigan being a mole makes no sense. But putting them aside, let's just say Dignam did meet with Brown, Billy and Colin on the roof, but they all got killed (except Colin) by Barrigan? That would mean Madolyn would have the envelope saying to contact Dignam, BUT HE'D BE ALREADY DEAD, therefore she'd have nobody to go to, so they'll know what actually happened. Now you can argue here that this was why Billy gave her the envelope, in case he was killed before he met Colin on the roof, but as I mentioned earlier, the movie's the passage of time is executed poorly here, again. So how can you tell how much time has passed between Billy giving Madolyn the envelope and then the package with one of the tapes to Colin arriving? I'm certain there would be no reason for Billy to wait, so it shouldn't be very long. I'd even assumed that the sequence of Billy doing what he did happened the very next day. Also, Colin doesn't even know about the tapes UNTIL Billy sends him one, so WHY would Billy even be in fear for his life? And why would Colin risk killing Billy as he thinks he's someone who has nothing on him to prove he's the mole or a record of being a cop? And yeah, so Dignam kills Colin so semi-happy ending, RIGHT? But what happened to "the boxes of tapes" Billy had? Are they at his or Dignam's place? Did police find them when Billy died? Did Colin locate Billy's home, break in, and destroyed them? Will Colin even be outed as the mole? Well, the movie doesn't answer these plot-holes, so what's the point? If the movie doesn't care how can anyone?

The ending of this movie, to me, is what makes people remember it. It was such a shock, and you just don't know how to feel about it. But you definitely feel SOME kind of way, and it sticks with you for a long time.

Everyone was talking about the head shots and then the badass ending. I’m not a Wahlberg fan but that’s his shining moment. But really it’s Nicholson’s acting and Leo’s that takes this movie to the high level it’s at, and obviously Scorsese brings it out of them.

"I'm the guy who does his job; you must be the other guy." Dialogues in this movie are just pure gold. It's one of the most re-watchable 2 and 1/2 hour movies ever made. Also, this was the film where Martin Scorsese finally won the Oscar for Best Director. He had been nominated, lost five times before and got it on his sixth nomination. His previous nominations were for "Raging Bull", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Goodfellas", "Gangs of New York" and "The Aviator". He has been nominated three more times for "Hugo", "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "The Irishman". All of them are great films.

Not all endings are made to be happy. Sometimes, what matters is an incredible story along the way. The way you two went through this, the emotional rollercoaster, is the whole point and it's why I enjoy watching reaction videos. If I don't see anything new I want to see, watching someone experience an incredible movie is almost as good as seeing it for the first time. Plus I always wanted someone to talk to about these movies when I watch them, so it's fun to hear what you guys have to say.

There was a time when Jack Nicholson didn't always play lunatics. I think it started with "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and was cemented with "The Shining." You need to see him in "Chinatown."

There is a reason why Romeo and Juliet is consider one of the best plays of all time. Tragedy with characters we come to understand and love can be so emotionally powerful. It can effect us deeply and as seen in video just shake us up to the core especially when don't see it coming. This is what separates those traditional action movies where good guys always win vs a drama/thriller.

My first, and still one of my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio roles is Arnie in _What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)._ That guy acted the heck out of that role! I remember wondering if they possibly got an actor with that character's condition to play him, and even if he was not quite that far, how they could have even directed him, how much of his lines were fortunate ad libs, etc. Tremendous talent!

I saw it in the theater, I didn't see any meltdowns, lol. A little gasp but give me a break. I guess if all a person knows is dopey franchise crap mixed with a few horror movies here and there (which are basically formula movies), I can see why "The Departed" would seem "wild" but jeez, this is so second-rate Scorsese (and Nicholson, for that matter). Wait till you see the great Nicholson movies, dude, and the great Scorsese movies, jesus christ. There are like two reactions for "King Of Comedy", there is ONE for "Cape Fear", there are two for "After Hours".....I think there are three for "Raging Bull". And ten million for the sloppy "Departed", lol. (A lot for "Taxi Driver", which is good, although you have to wonder about all the people who love that movie so much, lol.)

It’s nice to see after taking the movie in, is Dignam was really testing Bill, (when he knocks the coffee out of his hands) because he had to really know to trust him, that he hadn’t turned or lost sight.c like an older brother and Queenan the father in that scene. Just nice to know after the hard time he gave him, in the end he really cared about him, those 3 were like a little family.

My daughter (13) is a HUGE Leonardo fan cuz of Titanic. Poor kid made the mistake of walking in the living room right as the elevator doors opened a few years ago. This is one reaction I KNOW she won't be watching.😂😂😂

I was seriously shocked at Billy’s death, but the redeeming quality, for me, was Sullivan not getting away with it at the end of the movie. I believe Sullivan thought he was in the clear, but I would have been very frustrated, with the movie, if he had. So him getting killed by the unexpected source, in Dingham, gave me closure. Not the perfect ending but certainly different and unexpected!

I think that a happy ending would have been far less satisfying than the one we are given: this whole story is set up as a tragedy, with the inevitability of some sort of disaster clear from fairly early on - a happy ending would have felt like cheating. Yes, the great majority of the important characters die (hence the title); and to me that just makes the movie feel very reminiscent of Shakespeare's tragedies.

But The Departed puts a distinctive American spin on the story by conspicuously basing Frank Costello on the real Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, who controlled the criminal underworld of the city for many years.

I'm pretty sure Dellahunt wasn't undercover. He just liked Leo's character and didn't wanna give him up without being sure about it before hand but he didn't live long enough to and was a little preoccupied with dying to do it. He probably didn't want the last thing he was going to do be killing Leo's character either. When Nicholson said the news was lying about him being an informant he was correct and for the correct reason as well.

I watched a interview short with Tarantino where he talks about having people leave the theater and making a continuation in their own heads instead of being spoon fed every detail. This has been the movie I have been waiting for you guys to react! It has always been a fav to watch it with my friends back in college just to catch their reactions during those 2 death scenes. Glad it was an enjoyable watch for both of you. One of the reasons I really like this channel and what sets it apart from the others is the authenticity in the reactions. You guys are not prepped much further than what is absolutely necessary and it makes the reactions that much more special. Some movie/tv suggestions that you would enjoy would be Shutter Island, Leon The Professional, The Truman Show, The Planet of the Apes trilogy (the new 2011 series), Warrior (2011) and if you can really stomach the violence, Sicario. Love from Nepal!

Amen! Though, you may even be underselling just how great this movie was/is! It's imo not only Scorsese's best crime film, it's in a three-way tie with "Heat" and "The Godfather: Part 2" for being the number 1 greatest crime film ever made, regardless of director.

@@osmanyousif7849 The only other 2007 film that could have won Best Picture was Letters from Iwo Jima. Babel, the Queen, and Little Miss Sunshine where also nominated. Babel was okay as was the Queen but no one goes back to rewatch those. Sunshine was a tragic comedy and those never win best picture. I think only two comedies ever, actually, have won the best picture. So it was a softer year. The Departed actually didn't do great at the box office even with all that star power. I think it was confusing for the average person. But it gets better every re-watch.

A Martin Scorsese Masterpiece. In the "I smell a rat" scene, Jack Nicholson went completely off script. According to Leo DiCaprio, Nicholson must have taken a gun from the props department because the scene didn't call for one. Leo said his acting turned into genuine fear, especially when Jack pulled out the gun.

Some stories give meaning and purpose, and some stories question meaning and purpose. Some stories are like a whodunnit, where the point is to capture the criminal and trill us with the roller coaster ride of how they did it. Stories like this give us the roller coaster ride of a thriller, but it's not about the criminal or the cop and justice getting served, rather it's about the complications of life/relationships/society/justice. To wrap that up in a happily ever after ending, would belittle the big questions asked. Great reactions btw, one of the best reactions channels. And you two together is double the awesomeness! 💯

Hey CAssie for many moviegoers, The unresolved ending I think takes the movie to even higher heights. Life often goes like that but studios are often afraid to go there for fear of losing that precious cinema audience score. It created a way more compelling ending. Especially for a big-budget movie like this. Give the people, not the executives what they want. More risk-taking like, "The Departed"

Scorsese made this more unresolved because it's a remake of Infernal Affairs. Scorsese wanted to tell the same story in a Boston-like way which Boston is always unresolved because that's just it's history. Infernal Affairs still remains the better film in my opinion but Scorsese definitely made it in HIS style and I enjoy both films.

One of the most intense visits to the cinema I've ever had. This film is beyond awesome. It just locks you in and the way Scorsese keeps the momentum and tension rolling for the whole film so unbelievably good. I still give the nod to Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, as my best Scorses films, but The Departed is top tier as well and so hard to top.

I only learned of the full symbolism of the final shot recently. They made a point to say when Matt Damon gets the apartment that it has the view of the Massachusetts State House. You were right Matt wants to be legit and the only way out for him was to get rid of Jack and Leo. After Wahlberg kills Matt the camera pans over to the rat walking across the balcony and then to the view of the building. Justice was ultimately served. Satisfying in a different way.

I have never seen Cassie and CArly so shaken from a series of events in a movie. -------- Which includes "Silence of the Lambs" and "The Shining" The Departed did really good at shaking Cassie and Carly to their core. Such a great great great reaction. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED it.

Scorcese can't make a bad movie! Based on a real story, indirectly, Whitey Bulger ran Irish Boston for 30 years. And he definitely has FBI and DOJ people on his payroll! Johnny Depp did a movie directly about him.

Recommendations: The Hitcher (1986) - a fantastic thriller; Dark City (1998) - one of the best dystopian sci-fi; Gattaca (1997) - also a fantastic futuristic utopia/dystopia; High Fidelity (2000) - Cassie, you'd love it; A Bronx Tale (1993) - a kind of coming of age story directed by De Niro; They Live (1988) - a low-budget dystopia masterpiece from John Carpenter. Edit: In relation to De Niro an another great but perhaps forgotten film which adds more color to the above list; Ronin (1998) - whoever saw it knows how great it is. :)

Life doesn't always wrap things up nicely with a satisfying resolution. This movie works better because it has a just ending, but not the cliché satisfying one.
