This week we're introducing Toni to a comedy classic, "The Princess Bride". It's got everything, comedy, action, romance, fencing. What's not to love about this highly quotable classic from 1987? 😃

Mandy Patinkin, the actor who played Inigo Montoya, has said on numerous occasions that the motivation he used was very personal. When he was speaking to the Six Fingered Man, he imagined he was speaking to the cancer that took the life of his father. Thus, the real emotion behind his line reading, especially at the end.

I saw something about him and that line a few months back. Someone had made a video asking him about it because she had lost her father and they loved the movie. He responded by video to her. Awesome guy! 😃

The novel and screenplay were written by William Goldman, one of the most influential screenwriters ever. He also wrote Marathon Man (also from his novel), All the President's Men, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid among others. Goldman asked his kids what kind of story they wanted him to write: one said a princess, one said a bride... so he combined it. I've gifted the novel for birthdays and Christmas multiple times. One loose rule for life I have is "never trust anyone who doesn't like The Princess Bride".

This movie has a special place in my heart. I'm the exact same age as Fred Savage (to the *day*) so I was his age here when this came out. Also when the Grandfather tells him "As you wish" at the end, with the meaning being "I love you." kills me every time.

❤ "As you wish." ❤ Fun Fact: Was shot on a budget of $16 Million. Action Star Fact: Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin performed all of their own sword-fighting after many hours of training. According to Rob Reiner, the only stunt performed by Elwes' stunt double was one flip during the "Chatty Duelists" scene. Historical Fact: There really was a "Dread Pirate Roberts" in real life. His name was Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart, who operated in the Caribbean in the early 18th century. He is reckoned by many to have been the most successful pirate of all time. Gentle Giant Fact: Despite his character Fezzik's almost-superhuman strength, André René Roussimoff's back problems at the time prevented him from actually lifting anything heavy. Robin Wright had to be attached to wires in the scene where Buttercup jumps from the castle window into Fezzik's arms because he couldn't support her himself.

One of my fav stories, was about a passenger on a plane. He was wearing a shirt with the quote "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." On the front. The flight crew did not know the reference and tried to remove him from the plane. After finally explaining the meaning, the passenger was made to wear another shirt, because apparently the crew was afraid he was terrifying other passengers. 😅😂😂.. Om goodness. More people need to watch this movie.

The six-fingered man was Christopher Guest, who has been married to Jamie Lee Curtis for almost 40 years. Rob Reiner who directed this also directed 'Misery' (1990) a very different film based on a Stephen King book. There's one story that when Billy Crystal was improvising his 'Miracle Max' scene, Rob Reiner was laughing so much behind the camera that he couldn't breathe and thought he might throw up so he had to step out to take a break and compose himself. The 'Cliffs of Insanity' when they are viewed from a distance and you can tell that they are real, are cliffs on the west coast of Ireland that are a popular tourist attraction (not just because of this film). The film was shot at different locations in England and Ireland.

Toni watched The Princess Bride? Inconceivable! Cast notes: Cary Elwes was also in Twister and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Billy Crystal starred as one of the first regular gay characters on American television on ABC's Soap, and was also the main lead in City Slickers and When Harry Met Sally. . . Fred Savage starred on The (original) Wonder Years. I always thought he should've played Jay Leno's son in something. Oscar winner Carol Kane is best known for Taxi starring Christopher Lloyd, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza and Andy Kaufman. She currently appears as the chief engineer of the starship Enterprise on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Buttercup was the female lead in Forrest Gump and also starred in Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot. Mandy Patinkin starred on Criminal Minds, and in Yentl, which I highly recommend. The "Inconceivable" guy is a semi-regular on Young Sheldon, recurred on the original Gossip Girl, and played a popular alien character on many episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as Rex in all the Toy Story films. Peter Falk was Columbo!

Though not very well received at first, it helped launch the careers of Cary Elwes and Robin Wright to leads and not just ensemble parts. For several years after, it was the movie they were most recognized for. It is also the film they both have admitted to being proud and comfortable with to show their young growing children at the time. The Princess Bride has become sooo beloved and iconic because of the writing, easy flow, the various genres (adventure, action, comedy, romance, and fantasy) it travels to while telling a sweet, endearing, hopeful story for all in the family. There is no real vulgarity, nudity, gore, or lascivious affections. All the main characters are played by well-trained actors who knew how to play their parts with sincerity and truth to the characters. There was no need for CGI or needless special effects. Overall, the was made in its simplest form, relying mostly on the dialogue and the acting of each actor. The effects that it does have are at the minimum to keep the story moving forward.

This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The writer of the book also wrote the script of the movie . The scene with Westley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. There was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should also see Wilow, Lady Hawk, The Never Ending Story and The Labyrinth 1986. This is one of the movies with an epic soundtrack like Conan The Barbarian or Highlander which you should also see. one of my favorite quotes from this movie "“We are men of action, lies do not become us.”" . Fyi the actor who plays the grandpa is famous for playing the funny detective Columbo which had a great show for many years. Also Fyi I heard the writer of the book and of the script was on set when the filmed the Fire Swamp scene forgot it was a movie and panicked when fire was on Buttercup (Robin Wright) dress

This is a legitimate addition to any list of Christmas movies you may have put together. Notice some of the little clues in the grandson's room. Remember, this MOVIE is a visualization of the BOOK's narrative; the grandson hears grandfather's voice read the WORDS in the book; any IMAGES that are conjured up are in grandson's head. To really dig into the making of this film, try to find at your local library the book (or recorded book) by Cary Elwes (Westley, The Man in Black) titled "As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride." Lots of film lore and personal insights, how the cast was assembled, how much genuine fun and friendship the ALL had and cultivated while making the movie.

The one thing a remember about the book was that the ending was a bit more ambiguous and said that Wesley continues to get better but that it was uncertain if he would ever get his full strength back, I guess it was meant to be a more adult, less simplistic "happily ever after," ending, but it was a slight buzz kill for me. I liked the movie ending better.

RIP to Andre the Giant, in this, so good. What if grandpa is a descendant of Indigo or Wesley?😮😮. Billy crystal is the magic spells doctor. He said once in a restaurant, he's having a conversation at a table with a business guy and a few friends. He says another guy was sitting at a table, at an angle away, from him. He asked crystal what he got, and he had ordered something similar. Then he tells Crystal, " I once had a BLT here, and the Bacon was nice and lean, nice and leeeeeeen!" He said everyone started cracking up!

Scenes/subplots that are better in the book: Buttercup mourning Westley, Humperdinck arranging for commoner Buttercup to become a princess, Inigo’s backstory, Fezzik’s backstory, the snow sand rescue, the Pit of Despair, working with Miracle Max. Scenes/subplots better in the movie include: Inigo sword fighting with Westley, Vizzini battle of wits, Inigo fighting Count Ruben, storming the castle, and the meta story being the Grandpa reading to the kid.

Andre's line "people in masks can't be trusted" is a cute little nod to his main profession. He was a professional wrestler, and has faced masked opponents on many occasions. Masked wrestlers are almost always the "heels" (rule-breakers)

If you listen to books on Audible, I strongly recommend listening to "As You Wish" written and read by Cary Elwes, but also featuring the voices of many of the actors and creators of the movie. You'll learn many facts about the making of the movie, helpful tips (don't get hit on the head with the hilt of a sword), and hear Elwes fantastic impression of Sir Roger Moore.

It's not what it sounds like from the title! I have watched many, many reviews of this movie and not one of them has been negative.
