I think people are tired of her. She just kept releasing songs until one smashed, and surprise: No one cared. She should’ve let Señorita die, and wait for a while until people were excited to see her again. This whole era just seems rushed, even visually, it’s nothing we haven’t seen already, she just seems lost artistically.

I don’t think her career is necessarily “over” but I do think she’s already declining commercially very early into her career. There wasn’t a mass interest for Romance like there was for her first album. No one was really excited aside from her die hard fans. 54k pure sales isn’t AWFUL, it outsold tell me you love me by Demi lovato, but only 86k with streams is kinda unfortunate given that señorita is a huge song and is on the album and it’s basically the only song most people are streaming from Camila

Personally I believe one of the main reason why her first album was so big is because her management was still riding the fifth harmony wave. Her breakup from fifth harmony was so dramatized and talked about in the media that people just had to look and listen to what she was doing now as a solo artist. Her first album did have quite a few really catchy song but her dramatic leave from 5h definitely caused her album to get so much hype and attention.

Cam Ellis you’re absolutely right Havana did dominate the charts. But I still fully believe that her breakup from 5h helped her get so many views on her first solo album. Up until that point she only made albums with the group and people were curious as to what she had to bring as a solo artist. Also the breakup was so unexpected and dramatized and people couldn’t help but watch it as it all unfolded. But that’s just my opinion.

the layout of romance was ALL wrong. i know camila mentioned she wanted to release multiple songs before her album for whatever reason, but it was so messy. i listened to liar and shameless and then i just stopped caring because she released a new song every week. i think that's what happened to a lot of people. they just didn't care anymore. there was no more hype. also, you can tell that camila wasn't planning on having señorita on her album, but since it did so well and liar didn't, she decided to add it last minute to give the album streams. the entire romance era so far is just so messy. to be honest, señorita kind of ruined it. it was just too big. i personally think it was a mistake for her and shawn to have performed it at the ama's, because it obviously overshadowed her other performance of whatever song she did (sorry i just dont remember lol). camila needed to let señorita die off at the end of summer and should have waited until early next year to start her romance era, so that way people could get and break from her and then become re-interested. she should've dropped a stronger lead single in like february and then released the album in like may or something like that. While I understand that people make mistakes, racism is a very big mistake, as it is difficult for people to forgive racist actions/statements. The problem is that she was a new upcoming artist and these allegations decided to show up. Cardi B has said plenty of racist shit and yet she barely receives repercussions. This has almost nothing to do with gender, but everything to do with how famous a celebrity is. The more famous you are, the less consequences you will face. A prime example would be of the R. Kelly pedophilia case, where there was so much evidence against him yet it wasn't until now that people really acted on the evidence (better now than never I guess, he deserves to rot in Hell). Edit: Forgot to mention: She is getting what she deserves, but I wish that celebrities more famous than her would receive such consequences or even worse depending on how far they went. Edit 2: I am a big Camila stan but even I am not deluded into completely defending her every move, especially her mistakes. Seeing things like this is disappointing, and a betrayal to her fans.

I'm so sorry for her.... for me the album is so good, and I don't think this lack of success is due to the songs. It might be just for the bad promotion, it was actually a mess. Liar could've been a hit but señorita was still smashing it, as you said. Shameless is a good song but it's not the smartest choice for a first/second single etc. I think My oh my could save this tragic era, at least I hope so.

I think the problem boils down to bad PR : 1. The relationship w shawn was great for Señorita but it was timed so poorly everyone speculated it was just a stunt plus the rumours regarding shawns sexuality. 2. The album is BORING and the singles are too. Liar was not a bad choice for a single but poorly timed and tbh as soon as i listened to it I noticed the Karma similarities. However pop music is basically a recycling bin of old sampled melodies and beats so I let it slide. Immediately came Shameless and Easy which were...ok? There is nothing new to them. We have seen Camila do great ballads but these songs had nothing original going for them. And the whole album has this problem. It’s a corny muddy mess of cheesy lyrics with no track exploring the darker sides of love and attraction, etc. Sonically they arent too different either. It also tries very hard to sound sincere and it just feels fake. Like the romance stunt. 3. The era itself had a very rushed artistic vision that did nothing to improve on the adapted material. Inspiration is great but if you don’t build on it...the project will seem dated. And this is what happened. 4. Never addressing the feud with normani until it was too late. Camila is very easy to target on twitter bc of all these allegations of racism as well as being seemingly unaware of her poor dancing abilities. When compared with normani and framed as the aggressor, she becomes the perfect target for bandwagon hate.

Camila never called Normani, or anybody else she knew in real life, the n-word. Those screenshots you saw? They were proven to be fake. She tweeted on her old stan account, calling Obama and George Washington her "n-words" (she meant it in a positive way, she didn't quite get what the n-word meant or she wouldn't have been using it for a white person if she truly was racist), and she reblogged some insensitive and offensive jokes on her old tumblr. Those things are real. The Normani thing is fake, the girls who created those screenshots came out and said so. I'm all for holding people accountable but we have to understand that Camila wasn't racist, she just didn't understand what she was talking about or dealing with. She was a 15 and it's quite clear she didn't hate black people (as even in the stan account tweet she praises Obama, a black man), she just didn't understand how offensive and hurtful those jokes could be. We need to get off our high horses and forgive her, especially since she's already apologized for it for years now, and raised awareness for POC issues. I mean, let's not act like none of us ever made fun of south east Asians for their different eyes and the languages they spoke. Let's not act like we never pulled our eyes back to imitate being east Asian. Let's not act like all of that wasn't racist and we didn't do those things when we were younger and dumber. Let's not be hypocrites.

And "she was a kid" is bullshit too because she was FIFTEEN! That wasn't that long ago, as camila is only 22. And that means she was still a racist while in the band (because she joined 5th harmony at 16). Who knows how she was treating the girls behind doors? And what do you have to say for when she didn't defend her fans from racially attacking Normani? Because you can't use the "she was a kid" excuse then. She had countless of post and evidence, this is more than some dumb joke. Numerous of offensive jokes, and not just on tumblr, but on other social media as well. You can't change overnight, that's a product of years and years of racist upbringing. And "she didnt realize how offensive it was", DO YOU HEAR YOURSELF? This is america! By 15, you know what slurs are. She's from miami with a big population of black. SHES NOT STUPID. In order to find all those racist jokes funny, she has to understand the jokes. Romance was a hard listen for me, the falsetto on alot of the songs was a little uncomfortable on my ears. I don't think it suited her tone or brought out her strengths. I still see her more in her element in Spanish vibes and working with producers looking to push the boundaries within that genre. I like Camila has a human, i think she doesn't have those artistry abilities like Taylor and Lana have to build strong concepts, songwriting and melodies in an entire embodiment of work. I think time can help but it doesn't come naturally for Camila so i hope on the third album she realizes its very important for her to surround herself with people that know how to work her strengths :)

Thank you for your refreshing approach in your videos. I can feel a genuine interest in investigating the diverse factors and reasons. A flop can mean a drop in sales, and it seems like this is a recurring pattern for a lot of artists. But at the same time a commercial flop does not mean that a creation is a flop. I think the real measure is not commercial, but spiritual, and only the artist can feel whether they were genuine and honest with their art or not. Creating based on what others want, results in losing touch with our soul, purpose and mission AND THAT IS A FLOP. Seems like a lot of people just love criticising what artists and creators create because they cannot create original content. So what is a flop, really? It is purely a matter of perception!!! Anyway, I am not a fan, I was sharing my general point of view. But I love the song Living Proof.

That's a very interesting perspective, thank you for sharing! Wow! I've never thought of it like that! And thank you for watching, it's very interesting to uncover external factors that affect a record cycle. People focus on "the music is bad" or "the music is good" but I honestly think other things such as poor promotion, bad single choices and / or controversy very much impact a record a lot more than one's own opinion of the music.

@@popdissected4400 Yes, and I think it is also about a time in the artist's life when there are personal struggles, relationship issues, management changes, a disillusionment with the fame culture, when the intial high from being famous is wearing out, so they have to dig deeper for true happiness and contentment. It is very interesting that I discover similar patterns in my own life although I am not famous - thank God. After several socially, financially successful years I have "flop years" recently, but the spiritual growth in my inner world is immense. I feel a new wave of more successful years are coming, even in worldly terms. So all this feels very similar to this rollercoaster ups and downs cycles of many artists. I think this album is pretty good. I actually enjoy every song even though some of them have the same vibe as her old songs but that's okay to me bc the lyrics are unique and they describe specific moments in her life and that's kinda cute and nice. I can personally tell that she put effort into these songs so that's why i like this album. The thing is that the promo is very weird. She is performing liar, easy, living proof, shameless and my oh my all in once in different shows and i think thats pretty bad. She should have put her first single( my oh my in my opinion) in 2020 bc people are sick of her and the reason is Señiorita. She should promo that song and then drop the album after 2-3 months to hype the fans and then drop a promotional song like shameless and then after 4-5 months the next single for example liar and it should continue like that. Now it's just a mess. Many songs were released before the album and many people were disappointed bc we only heard 4-5 new songs in the album. The rest of them were already known and performed so it wasn't that exciting for the fans. Anyway she's really talented i hope the label treat her better

She released too many singles and they had a lack of promotion. Plus every time she went on a show to perform, she did señorita. My Oh My should’ve been the lead single. Plus it’s a tik tok song. I saw another video that was talking about Camila also, about how when releasing 2 singles in a short time, you’re setting up for failure. Honestly, feel bad for Camila, it’s like 365 all over again. Thank you for watching! And yes, I think maybe she might have tried to capitalize on the success of "Senorita" and it just backfired because the song was too powerful to compete with - with her OWN music. It sucks, but there should have been some foresight. And speaking of Katy, I think that's why her own "Birthday" didn't do as well as it could have. It released while "Dark Horse" was still huge, and the song had to compete against another one that was much more recognized.

Hey all! Just letting anyone watching know I accidentally stated "Liar" and "Shameless" were released a day a part, when they were released on the same day. "Liar" was ANNOUNCED September 4th (alongside "Shameless"), but both released September 5th. I got the dates of the announcement and release mixed up, my apologies all - thank you for bringing it to my attention! Secondly, in regards to Camila's racism, I want to say I did not intend to skim over it nor have it appear I don't care about it. Racism is a very sensitive subject, and a very serious matter. The only reason it was not further elaborated on in this video is because once her tumblr had surfaced, I had finished the video and was only able to include a headline. I have never before in my life thought (or even cared) about singles / promotional releases, and how the campaign surrounding the music affects it, and that whole thing of when to release, why, how, that's so interesting, I don't actually understand it or get it yet, but it's another face of the music industry that's actually very important and I'm learning to care and pay attention to it. As for the album itself, I actually loved it. I've found it diverse, engaging and with a particular texture that I can't define, it sound big and bold, and the tracklist pretty much flows seamlessly (not without its bumps).

She never said anything about Normani or the black community. She called Barack Obama “Mah N****” So do your research and stop blowing everythjng out of proportion. IF YOU WANT CHANGE, YOU NEED TO ACCEPT IT. Camila is not a child. A 22 year old doesn’t equal a 15 year olds brain. She has apologized more times the last two years for something she said as A MINOR than Eddie Murphy has for degrading the entire LGBTQ+ community as an adult. Ya’ll pick and choose who is cancelled and who isn’t. And most of the people hating on Camila only see this as a win for Normani. It’s all just a competition to you.

I think due to her playing the SAME cards she did with “Camila” that people lost interest, whenever an artist tries to use the same formula on an album, the album suffers. She should not have included Senorita, being as Shawn used it to hype his album, if she released a different first single (I.E. My Oh My, Cry For Me, First Man, either a bop or a ballad, to catch the listeners attention.) in December not November, Senorita should’ve died out. Her idea for listing was alright, but I think that she could’ve done better, like the slower songs put first to build up to the more catchy up-beat songs, since she wanted to make you feel the album. The videos could’ve been better as well, the looks were good but the Liar video shouldn’t have cut the song off in parts, it was also not too fitting for the song, I get she was a literal liar in the video, but her dying when she speaks the truth is a bit dramatic. Shameless video was alright, I didn’t care for Living Proof’s video, it wasn’t suiting for the song In my opinion.

I also think the album is mediocre. It's not bad at all, she sounds great, production is mostly good and the lyrics are not bad either...but it's just too lackluster. There's no flavor to most of the songs. They all sound the same, and it's not a good sound...there's nothing that stands out besides shameless, this love and maybe my oh my. But the only song I REALLY REALLY like is shameless. It's such a shame (no pun intended) for her to downfall this bad cause I do think she's talented but this entire era & album felt rushed and i feel like she just took advantage of señorita's success and thought the album & the singles were going to be as succesful if she released it at that moment so she rushed everything. I get that every artist in the music industry wants to sell, but that should not be the priority and sadly I think Camila's priority in her entire career is to sell and that's it. And look how it went: really bad. She just should've waited until next year or maybe until she was artistically in a good place to give us the best she could offer, cause I'm SURE this isn't the best she can offer.

Personally, I love Romance. I think as a whole, this body of songs presents a dynamic narrative that chronicles the recent evolution of Camila's views on love, as well as her own romantic life. However, as you mentioned in your video, I think the timing of the singles was the album's Achilles' heel. Apart from not coordinating well with the runaway success of Señorita, if you look closely at the timeline, five singles were released within the span of TWO months. That is insufficient time for any single, regardless of its quality, to make a significant impact on radio or listeners. I know it's common practice for artists to put out promo singles to help create buzz for an album, but I think Camila and her team should have stuck to one or two radio singles at the most and given the public a chance to warm up to these songs. Using the example of her self-titled debut, part of the reason Havana was such a huge success was because it was a sleeper hit. Initially, it wasn't even a radio single, just a promotional one. However, its positive reception on streaming platforms led to a gradual buildup that resulted in the song being repackaged as the album's lead single. In this way, the single's release was much more organic, as it actually reflected what her fans - and the public at large - was truly interested in at the time. Perhaps for subsequent singles on Romance, a similar approach should be taken. Camila and her team can look at what songs are resonating with people digitally and then translate this to a broader marketing campaign. That being said, Havana was a MONSTER of a hit single and most recording artists are lucky to even score one in their entire career. The double-edged sword of such success is that it will undoubtedly cast a shadow over all future works by that artist and the public (both fans and critics) will constantly hold them to such an anomalous standard. I hope Camila's tour does well because I think she is a promising artist with much to offer. Thank you again for this well-crafted content!

A big thing with cancel culture is going back and digging up shit they did when they were young, even though they have since changed they are still persecuted for a person that they used to be. Not to mention the fact that 15 year old Camila probably didn't know she would be famous and have her life put under a microscope. It's a shitty situation all around and I hope she can make it out the other side, but we'll see.

But yeah, the overexposure is making ppl think is pr which is not, and bringing more hate to them, and sadly ppl will only realize with time . It worked, clearly, so now they're dragging it out for the tweens. And the rest of us have to endure it. Joe Alwyn is an obvious beard, but at least he and Taylor Swift are subtle about it, and that's obviously a vastly different situation to just, thirsting for publicity. Could you please talk about liberation by xtina, how rihanna never flops, lana del rey's consistency, dua lipa's potential in the industry, summary of this decade (fave albums, songs, mv, etc.) etc.

Wonderful ideas! I was reading about Rihanna last night and found out she's never had a #1 record in the US, but despite that, has had a huge career with a lot of success. So there's definitely a lot to discuss! And I'd love to do another video on Christina, and a new one on Lana. All in good time :)

Chris Breezy bruh what? DaBaby has a child and he wouldn’t hit THAT. I mean he had a whole verse in “cash sh*t”” with Megan thee Stallion and he was talking about smashing her soooo I’m sure he’d rather hit her

Camila’s career is definitely not over, it just feels like Romance is rushed and the fact 6 singles were released before the album feels messy, Romance is also a brilliant album and I really enjoyed it honestly, that being said she’s for sure still got a solid career and needs to take a long break with her next era 💖

We don’t know if she “for sure still got a solid career”. Outside of 5H she’s only been poppin solo-wise for about 2 years. People are already saying she’s flopping and she does NOT have the stanbase to put her back afloat if this sophomore era flops. Support her this era if her racist ass career supposedly ain’t over.

In my opinion, I believe it started in her first album. She had a had a lot of hype and buzz from Havana being a smash which made the 2nd single, Never Be The Same a top 10 hit. What ruined her was releasing that awful song with Pharrell, Sangria Wine. The song was not even in her album. The song was a massive flop and the GP wasn't here for it. The hype she had died down quickly. Because every other single off that album flopped. The GP was no longer interested in her. She should've released an actual 3rd single right after Never Be The Same. Consistency is the key when you look at pop girl's first album. Which is why Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Kesha did so well in theirs. In my opinion, Senorita was big because of Shawn Mendes not her. Shawn has a massive fan base and the latin wave sound was still poppin it was bound to be smash.

I know it wasn't 2020 yet when this video was released but... + because of COVID-19, the Romance Tour cancelled which possible did affect Romance in one way or another.

I know this is an old video, but I am Camila fan and I’ve been wondering when she will release new music. So I decided to come back to re-watch this video to see what was wrong with the “Romance” Era My thoughts are that her label relied on the fact that Camilla released two singles at the same time once before “OMG” and “Havana” and figured that one of the songs would skyrocket or at least semi-sky rocket like Havana did. In my opinion, you can’t always rely on the same thing to work all the time. Also, I think that “Liar” and “Shameless” are great songs. But, to be honest they don’t exactly sound like big singles, And “Liar” didn’t sound like a good first single because there was too many songs that sounded like it at the time. I think Camilla should’ve released “My Oh My” as the lead single since it features DaBaby and he was getting really popular at the time. Then, she should’ve released “Living Proof”as it was a unique sounding song and people sometimes lean towards songs that sound different. Also, she could’ve waited until Valentine’s Day to release the album “Romance” so the title could tile along with the day. Let the success of the album grow, and then release more singles.

my oh my is really catchy and shouldve been the lead single in my opinion. as u said, the promoting was very rushed, and the album was very rushed as well. nevertheless some songs are really good and ppl should give them a listen. her performances have also been top notch

I think all the singles she had put out before the album release were so not well put together. I felt like she was all over the place and it was a mess in my opinion. It was too much.
