POPE PUIS X LAID TO REST - NO SOUND

The body of Pope Pius X begins its journey towards the city of Venice where it will be kept for a month and then will be returned to Rome. The journey started from the Vatican city railway station which is only used for loading and unloading freight. The embalmed body of the saint, Pope Pius X was carried in secret from the Vatican where it was kept in a railway coach which had been transformed into a Chapel for the occasion. Pope John 23 climbed into the Chapel and blessed the body and remained in prayer.

This is not his funeral; he died in 1914 and was canonized a saint in 1954. This film shows a special visit of the body to Venice where he had been Cardinal Patriarch in 1959. The visit was authorized by Pope St John XXIII who had also been Patriarch of Venice. After some weeks in Venice, the body was returned to St Peter’s Basilica where he is enshrined.

Many people made a fuss over JP II being the first Polish pope, but that wasn't true. Pius X's father, Jan Krawiec, was born in Poland and moved to Italy to escape Prussian occupation, changing his name to Giuseppe Sarto to blend in. Sarto is the Italian word for tailor, which was Jan's occupation.
