Popee The Performer (ポピーザぱフォーマー) is a series of 3DCG shorts produced for Kids Station, one of the all-anime satellite stations in Japan. The show was produced by Zuiyo Co Ltd, and created by husband-wife team Ryuji Masuda (writer) and Wakako Masuda (art director, art design, and character designer). The music was composed by Osamu Tezuka, and the vocals within the main theme and OST belong to Aoyogi Tsuneo. The series is known for it's black comedy, dark and disturbing themes, morbid imagery, bizarre and surreal storylines, and overall creepy tone. The series has 39 episodes split equally among 3 seasons. There is also a manga drawn by Wakako Masuda
The show follows Popee, an apprentice clown, and his assistant, Kedamono, as they attempt various circus acts and go about their daily lives as performers. Things have a way of going wrong, however, usually due to Popee. Their mentor and Popee's father Papi, is no help to the bizarre scenarios the characters end up in.

kinda crazy how great the finale is, really makes the show feel like it's one big connected piece when in reality it's probably just a silly little slapstick show with some oddly experimental elements thrown in a lot

Wakako Masuda, the creator’s wife, has actually confirmed or at least alluded to some of the fan-theories being true, including the idea that the series is some sort of a hallucination. There’s actually decent foreshadowing at a few points in the series, though some of that might be reading into things too much.

@@shu5809the second part of what frog says is "he looks just like his mother (White Wolf)" and I think since everyone is scared of Kedamonos mother Popee probably understood why Kedamono was so terrorized. (Kedamonos mother is the wolf you see in the sky that terrifies all the characters)

To anybody wondering what the frog said: “Kedamono no kao wa” translates to: (I know/I saw) the face of kedamono/kedamono’s face/the face of the beast. The last thing the frog says is “Kedamono’s face... looks like his mother’s” (which means that the frog knows his mom-) Edit: aight so like this comment is blowing up for some reason- I’m confused but thanks I guess XD
