Simple, easy way to build a kayak cart out of PVC Pipe. No special tools required. Tires came from Harbor Freight and everything else came from Lowe’s.

best video about kayak cart building i've seen...very informative...other vids are just showing you they're making it without the step by step...this one is more detailed...awesome.

Thank you so much. I love the details you share, it's like working with my uncle : ). I'm going to make one a little different, j bars to hold 2 kayaks and a bar to hook on my bike. It's already challenging, but that makes it fun too. TY for the tips!!!

For this specific kayak I made mine out of a piece of door entry aluminum flashing (4x4in angle iron essentially) with an aluminum tube as an axle and harbor freight lawn mower wheels. I used two 2 hole straps (located an inch in from the outside edges) to secure the pipe in the inside corner (close as the strap let's you get anyway) of the flashing with enough sticking out for the wheels washers and pins. On one of the 2 hole strap bolts (the more centered hole) I used a screw eye so I had somewhere to attach bungee cords from the cart to the rear handle. I added another screw eye on the front of the cart to run a string up to the anchor cleat so it cant slide off the back when moving. A bit of pool noodle for padding, zip ties to secure the padding and some tape for wear protection finished it off. Loop a bungee on each side through the handle and down the the screw eyes on the cart then slide it under the flat area in back then run the string up the the cleat to secure it. It's a very small package that works in rough terrain and stores upside down on the back of the kayak after launch easily. Sry for how confusing my explanations prob are, just wanted to share another idea if it can help anyone.

Nice build I think I’ll try this idea. The only thing I’d do different is use solid wheels like lawn mower wheels, no flat tires to worry about. The pool noodles and kickstand were brilliant ideas.

This is a great design. I highly recommend the kick stand/handle. I don’t think it needs to be that tall though. I chopped mine down 6 inches and would have gone more if it wasn’t for the coupler.

good design but would use schedule 40 pvc as that is sturdier and just costs pennies more per foot

Very informative video. Yep, there are 'thousands' of these, but I like this one the best. You covered everything very well and the visuals are pretty damn good. I will build my cart based on your video. Got a question though: How long is that handle?
@PoposWoodworks5 жыл бұрын
ghank13 I ended up using an extra piece for the handle and I believe it was around 48 to 52 inches or so. I made it long enough that I didn’t have to bend over to get it under the kayak lol. The lazy in me! If you need to know exact, when I get home tomorrow I’ll measure it and let you know for sure. 👍🏻
@ghank135 жыл бұрын
ok that makes sense. long enough so you don't have to bend over to get under the kayak. easy measurement for me. thanks, and again..great video.

"Don't want to get any on my workbench, like that's about the only thing not on there" ; ) (lol). So why did you choose to go cradle as opposed to scupper plug cart?
@PoposWoodworks5 жыл бұрын
Mark Ashlock That’s a good question. I had built a scupper hole cart also. But one of my friends had been using one for a while and started getting water in his kayak. Come to find out, the stress from the pvc going in the scupper holes and it moving and bending with the yak caused 2 cracks inside the scupper holes which were taking on water. Plus there was no way to repair the cracks since it was inside the holes. Needless to say, it cost him a new kayak.
@markashlock80585 жыл бұрын
Popo's Woodworks : I had wondered about that. Love your design. Think that’s what I’ll go with. Can you think of a way to build something more compact that could be broken down and carried in the yak for potential solo portages, etc.?
@chrispierce29425 жыл бұрын
Scuppers are the weakest part of the boat. A cradle is always best

xxgg I haven’t had an issue so far. I’ve already used it a bunch of times. I guess only time will tell.
@seabass225 жыл бұрын
Shouldn’t be turning that fast. It’s just being used to tote a kayak from the vehicle to the water
@edcones29485 жыл бұрын
The wheels should have bearings. The nuts and washers should be tight against the inside bearing race which won't move. The wheel then turns on the outside race. Done properly, there should be no rubbing.

PVC carts will break if you use them on rough,steep ground.That's what happened to mine

Would a canoe be too heavy for this?
@PoposWoodworks4 жыл бұрын
Brandy Bowman I’m not sure, my kayak loaded down with gear is pretty heavy and it does fine. You could always go to a bigger size pvc pipe and it’ll make it stronger.
