What The Flick?!

8 жыл бұрын

"Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast), Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes) and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).
Childhood friends Conner (Andy Samberg), Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) found fame and fortune after forming the hip-hop group the Style Boyz. Owen and Lawrence faded into the background when frontman Conner left the band to launch a successful solo career. Now, the egotistical singer decides to film a documentary about his life while he's still on top. When his second album flops, the camera is there to capture his world come crashing down.

I was going into this hoping it wouldn't be a mockumentary because my expectations are so high with the Christopher Guest films, but I still want to see this and hopefully enjoy it for what it is.

Seeing a lot of polarizing reviews for this movie, Chris Stuckmann only gave it a C+ the other day. I guess I'll have to check it out to see for myself.

Chris stuckmann has absolutely no sense of humor, as we could see from how he responded to that whole zods snapped neck thing, so it was no surprise that he didn't like this movie. this movie is hilarious though don't listen to him.

I think Ben has a soft spot for comedies but he still brings up a valid point at the end. Christy's score should in no way be lowered because she wanted more scenes from supporting actors. Was it a detriment to the movie that they weren't in it longer? It's a case of audience expectations getting in the way of a fair review of the movie. It's like going into "Drive" expecting an action movie and then giving it a lower score because it contains a total of three minutes of action. That's not what the filmmakers were going for and it should be judged accordingly. But hey, that's just me.

Wow, those are some very high scores for this movie. I liked it, it was fine, a 6.3/10 for me. You gave similar scores to The Wolf of Wall Street which is pretty crazy cause the difference between them is pretty huge on all levels imo!

Any movie that mocks hip-hop is a film I have to go see. If there is a genre of "music" that deserves to be lampooned, it is the hip-hop genre, where style, swagger, and posturing is seen as a substitute for actual vocal and instrumental talent. The fact the real musicians get eclipsed by the likes of Kanye and Jay Z is a travesty, and a film that shows how silly that style of "music" is, already gets a thumbs up from me, even before I see it.

you are either: A) racist or B) stupid Jay-Z is an incredible lyricist, and Kanye is the producer behind some of the best rap albums of all time (namely, Be). Listen to Reasonable Doubt, and you will immediately be proven wrong about Jay-Z. or perhaps you already have and it went over your head. in that case, stick with the beatles old man
@alphacause
@alphacause 8 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Baker Well you clearly fit option B - Stupid. Only a stupid person would make the assumption that someone is racist for not liking a genre of music, when that genre of music has many popular performers from different races. Hip-hop, globally, has popular performers who are Caucasian, Latin America, Black, and Asian. Even a child knows this. For you to think that a criticism of hip-hop is tantamount to racism, clearly illustrates your own racist generalization about that genre of entertainment. With regards to hip-hop artists being "incredible lyricists", their strength in this regard is highly overrated. Yes, they can rhyme, and they do that rhyming with a particular rhythm, but most popular forms of music also consist of rhyme schemes at a particular rhythm. The difference is that the singer in other forms of music, unlike rappers, have to have, on top of rhyming and rhythm, tremendous vocal control, in order to stay at a particular pitch. This is something hip-hop performers need very little of. Furthermore, musicians in other genres have to concern themselves with composing engaging melodies, while hip-hop is nearly devoid of melody, with the exception of a rare instrumental soundbite, most of which is sampled to begin with. In terms of the so called "producing" talent, it takes far more talent for real musicians to play real instruments, which require higher levels of dexterity, and to coordinate all of that, than some buffoon like Kanye, who uses mostly samples and merely edits them together. Take anything that a hip-hop entertainer does, and I can show you an artist from any genre of music - rock, jazz, blues, R&B, country, classical, etc. - that does what they do, and quite a bit MORE. To treat hip-hop as being equally deserving of respect with these other musical categories, makes about as much sense as saying a child's finger painting is deserving of equal respect with the paintings done by a Leonardo Da Vinci.

Something tells me that this movie isn't as vicious as it should be, b/c the ppl who prop up said industry are behind it's construction. Ehhemm .. Adam Levine and Usher. Hard to take the satire seriously when those two guys are part of cast. Watch 'Network'. That's satire. Sry Alonso, Hot Rod got shit reviews, yours doesn't trump all the others.
