POPULAR CARS OF THE 1990s : NOT POPULAR NOW

This is the story of America's popular cars in the 1990's. In the 1990s, the automobile industry drastically changed, pushing sedans out of fashion and replacing them with sports cars, SUVs, and pickups.
The ‘90s was a time of change. The millennium was approaching its end, and the war between baby boomers and millennials was beginning. The automotive industry was also undergoing a revolution.
Sedans, especially those made in the United States, were losing popularity.
Everyone wanted to celebrate the end of the year in style or at least with a bang after hearing rumors of Y2K happening one second after midnight in the year 2000. (how gullible were we?!).

Far more interesting lineup of cars that you could easily identify, as opposed to today, that requires identification via looking at the emblems.

I find cars from the old days to look all so similar and I just can't tell the difference. I agree though that brands are making all there models look the same and it's so hard to tell the difference. All of the vechiles in VW, Lexus, Audi, MB, Acura, Cadillac etc have the same design langauge and it's hard to tell the difference. Brands like Kia, Hyandai, and Toyota can have a brand identity but make the cars look different. A Hyandai Sonota looks a lot different from a Hyandai Elantra. But you can tell it's part of the same brand. While a VW Jetta looks basically like a VW Passat. With no inspiration at all. I like watching old cars but seriously they all look the same and so boring with no passion. Mostly the 80s and 90s. Looking at all the 80s hatchbacks from Europe and I can't tell the difference at all.

Exactly. I used to be able to tell what a car was just by seeing its door handles. Now every car except E-cars and the Charger/Challenger have the same boring pull out handle.

I think that the Lexus LS400 needs to be on this list. It single handedly altered the Luxury Car Industry. And redefine reliability. It forced the Germans and the Americans to change their ways. All whilst forcing the remaining Japanese car manufacturers to re-invent/re-imagine new upscale brands, like Infiniti and Acura (who actually were first to market). Thanks for the video.

And then suddenly one day, you realize that it's been a while since you've seen any of these vehicles on the road (at least in decent numbers). The 1990s were the pinnacle of simplicity, technology and in many cases, reliability. Minivans, sedans and sports/muscle cars were on their way out, SUVs were in and soon to change to Crossovers.

Back in the 90's I worked for a small state law enforcement agency in the mountains in NC. Although it wasn't my daily vehicle our fleet had a Jeep Cherokee like the one in this video we could use when going to more rugged areas. Some of these areas were more than just rugged but that thing never let me down (or anyone else I know of that used it). It was tough and felt really light on its feet for an SUV. Also it had a straight 6 that was pretty damn strong. I loved using that thing. I can see why they were so popular.

Great video thanks for sharing. It’s a real shame it’s so hard to find a station wagon these days. One of my favourite memories as a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s was travelling round Australia in our 1966 VE Valiant Regal Safari. Although Valiants really liked rusting out those slant sixes were bulletproof. One of my favourite cars on this video has to be the Chevy impala SS. One of our local truckees imported one back in the 90s it looked a brilliant bit of kit. Loving your work. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Ah yes... the white Ford Bronco, a boxy, dated SUV that was getting a bit long in the tooth until the OJ Simpson thing, then everyone suddenly wanted a white Ford Bronco. I know it would be in poor taste, but it would be cool to see OJ Simpson in a commercial for the newly released Bronco, maybe have him drive a white Bronco on the freeway with some sort of witty comment.

Um, I would say the 78 Little Red Express, 87 Shelby Dakota, 91 Syclone, 9p 454SS all showed Americans what a mistake truck could be long before the Lightning. The Miata was popular only among a small group, the Taurus was the best selling selling sedan from 92 to 96 and then the Camry which easily left the Accord behind both. Impala SS was fantastic, but had a short 3 year run sadly and had very limited sales. The Bronco died in 96 while HM kept build 2 door full-size SUVs for a years after. What was the criteria for this list? Was it just...random vehicles you remember? The Bronco wasn't more popular than the Taurus. The Camry closed the decade as the best-seller of the segment. The XJ Cherokee was anywhere near as popular as the S10 Blazer. You profiled the 80s Mustang more than the 90s version, which didn't have the 5.0L V8. This is just a list of 90s vehicles.

"Popular"?? By what measure? The last generation of full size Bronco from 1992 to 1996 only sold about 160,000 and was replaced by the Expedition. The Ford Taurus in the same period sold over 2.5 million. Even after it was uglified in 1996 to the melted jellybean, in that year alone it sold nearly 4 times the total number of 1990s Broncos. Only about 70,000 Impala SSs where built in the production years of 1994 to 96. Even the S Series Saturn did 500,000 in sales in the same 1990 to 1996. You need a new title. "Boca Bros favourite cars of the 1990s". You can drop the minivans if you want. We'll understand.
